Another 5 Star book from the Leadership Series...
A great reformer written from an honest perspective, well aware of our own culure... another great one for young and old alike!

Very engaging
I have read 3 or 4 biographies of Knox in the past ten years. Stanford Reid's *Trumpter of God* is considered the standard. But Wilson's is by far the most engaging.

Wilson has not attempted a comprehensive biography. Instead he hits the milestones and highlights what made Knox one of the most interesting figures in Western history. Wilson is very pastoral -- he makes contenporary, practical applications from Knox's that the reader will find very challenging.

After I read this book I bought three more copies.

Couldn't Put It Down
I have designated book reading times only a few times a week. So if I'm really into a book, it will go all over this little island. Mother Kirk must have graced the presence of my barber, dentist and several relatives. Jam-packed with wisdom and filled with many quotables throughout, this book will challenge Evangelicals to reassess their practices (the appendix's 32 questions for elders and wives would be very helpful if church's had the spine to implement such a needed and biblical screening) and more importantly their identity.

I found myself almost cheering out loud in chapters 2- Reformational Identity and 4- Thunder of the Word. I also found myself taking special notice of the chapter on the sacraments. Compelling arguments for the use of leavened bread and of course real wine. Loved the part on baptized children partaking communion. Also enjoyed the chapter on the Sabbath.

If you are satisfied with living out a convenienced, mundane, 9-5, unionized Christianity (AS-IF! but sadly some are), don't read this book. If you are a Christian who thirsts for more and more, get this book right away. You will be provoked to reevaluate your, your church's and evangelicalism's current status. You'll then be provoked to forward the cause of Christ. Fired me up.

Excellent read!
One of Wilson's best. Covers many aspects of theology of the church to starting a literature ministry

Young Heros of the Bible--Make the Bible come alive
Dedicated to all the grandchildren of the world, 82 year old Kirk Douglas shares his favorite Bible stories. In a kindly grandfatherly tone, he explains why each protagonist is a hero on a level that children will readily comprehend. He thinks through why Joseph's brothers hated him and how David's faith in God helped him overcome Goliath. Interspersed throughout are his childhood experiences, which today's students can relate to and which aid in the understanding of the memorably written text.

A fabulous book
The book "Young Heroes of the Bible" is a fabulous. When I want to pick up a book and read, this book falls into this category. I have already read the book twice, and I think I will read this book many more times. This book is a wonderful book with excellent explanation for what happens in the bible. This book falls into the category of all other short stories, pick up this book again and again category.

Word-music
This is a wonderful collection of poetry readings by some of the best actors in the world. If you allow yourself only one tape of poetry, I would recommend this one. The rendition of Lawrence's "The Snake" is spellbining, and the reading of Macneil's "A Death in the Family" is quietlly gut-wrenching. And you will be surprised how well Bill Shatner recites about whales. Buy this tape, and you will listen to it again and again.

Terrific book
This is the most interesting autobiography I have ever read. In addition to being a great actor, Kirk Douglas is also a terrific writer. The book is written in a crisp, lively pace with plenty of fascinating stories. Mr. Douglas discusses the good things he did during his life, and the not-so-good. He's definitely had a full life.

Shows one of the actor's other talents
I read "Ragman" many years ago and still find it to be one of the most entertaining star autobio's that I have ever read. Douglas is very straightforward in his retelling of his humble beginnings, his personal triumphs and tragedies, as well as his long and distinguished career. I recently found his follow-up "Climbing the Mountain." If it is half the book the former is, my financial investment on both would be worth it.

One of the best autobiographies I have ever read
I like autobiographies because I think that is the best way to get to know someone. Not that they are always honest and completely open although Kirk Douglas seems to be in this one. I suspect some things are prettied up particularly in the latter portions of this book. I read the hardcover and I don't know if the paperback covers the more recent years. The best part of the book is the early years, particularly his college days and early career

Weird Western Tales had nothing on this book.
Inspired by Joe R. Lansdale and DC comics such as Weird Western Tales and Jonah Hex, Dark Highway's Skull Full of Spurs left a big ole smile on this cowpoke's face. Jack Ketchum's story Luck, about a man who continues to get himself killed over and over and the unfortunate fates of his killers was one of the books highlights. Another was Richard Laymon's story The Hangman, a great and surprisingly funny story about a vengeful ghost. The stories about the midget sheriff, a magic bullett which hangs in midair in the middle of main street and Cthulhu mythos in the old west are all also great. Pick this book up.

Twisted, Twisted, Twisted
Skull Full Of Spurs lives up to its name: It is truly a roundup of weird Western tales that will shock you, scare you and entertain you to the uttermost degree. I had a blast reading this book and anyone who's a fan of horror fiction will, too.

The book contains 12 stories, all of them good, none of them bad. But of course, some stand out against the others. Jack Ketchum's "Luck" is a great little campfire tale, Rick Hautala's "The Screaming Head" is about a horrifying folklore legend that comes to life and Yvonne Navarro's "Divine Justice" plays with the idea of heaven and hell in a Western setting.

But there are three great masterpieces of the bizarre in this book. Richard Laymon's "The Hangman" is a classic ghost story mixed with the elements of the Western tale and ends up being a great, satisfying read. Lawrence Walsh's "The Devil's Crapper" is a funny and twisted story that will make you laugh with every word and every sentence. And Adam-Troy Castro's "The Magic Bullet Theory" (the longest story in the book) is an epic tale that is brilliantly written and highly satisfying.

And if that's not enough for you, there are also stories by Edward Lee, M. Christian, Nancy A. Collins and a very twisted, very disturbing story by Robert Devereaux. Skull Full Of Spurs has it all; horror, action, fantasy, humour... It has something to please every reader of the genre. This is one collection you'll want to come back to time and time again. So saddle up part'ner and get ready to be entertained!

A helluva fun read
I just finished Skull Full of Spurs and I thought it was great. My favorite was the story by Edward Lee. It's a real departure for him. The Brian Hodge story is also quite good. I haven't enjoyed a book this much since Razored Saddles. I'd like to see more of these weird western type stories hit the shelves.

Highly recommended.

My first book on the Holocaust
Kirk Douglas the actor, turned writer wrote this delightful short novella for children and adult alike. This is a fabulous read to young children who are interested in learning about the Holocaust, or for those who need to do a project on the horrific events.
The young child and innocence is awe inspiring. Moishe, a young Jewish boy is ashamed of his roots when America nazis invade the farm he is living in. His pity on himself is unfortunate because no one should be ashamed of themselves.

Learning more about Moishe and his inner thoughts would have been nice rather than about the layout of the farm or other family members.
It is ironic that the hate he had for himself and culture was quickly changed when he realzied, after being adopted by a Catholic family was where he fit in. This is a quick, good read better suited to the younger generation.

IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A GOOD QUICK READ...
This book by Kirk Douglas is perhaps one the best and shortest books I have read. It is very accuarte and extremely emotional. It is a book that you will cherish and read over and over many times.

WOW!
I suggest this book to anyone of any age. A quick read, but you'll want to read it again and again! The story is about Moische, a young Jewish boy who lives during the Holocaust. He doesn't understand why he's being punished for being Jewish, and decides he just won't be a Jew anymore. This book is in 2 parts, one told by Moische and one by Danny -- who is not Jewish but holds the memories of Moische and the horrors of the Holocaust. It sounds better than this review, I promise!

TANGO, TANGO, TANGO!!!!
I read this book many years ago but I remember it very much. Aside from being written by a romatic lead star, Kirk Douglas, the love story he tells warms your heart. I was very surprised with the pain of the love story and what these two lovers had to go through.

It was sad that these two lovers had a very short time together before the end came. He was older than his love interest but she was seriously ill. They resolved their differences by going to the end together in Brooklyn.

As beautiful as it gets
This is a wonderful book full of passion and desire, of love and the unexpected. It's delightful to read, and you wouldn't be able to put it down once you started reading. You'll get to feel the writer's work, and you'll live the moments as though they were your own, wishing you can make them true at some point in your life.

A Beautiful Story
This is a beautiful story written by an excellent writer. It has mystery and romance between 2 people you wouldn't expect it from. The best he has written!

MAN WITH A GREAT EGO
MY STROKE OF LUCK By Kirk Douglas

This is a case where a huge ego with character comes in handy. It let him help others and it helped him become one of the best actors in his time. Additionally, he wrote this book about a stroke he had in his 80s-and this is one of several books he wrote. I hope my ego is large enough to keep me going for that long. It's not big enough to even to start what he has done is one lifetime. So he couldn't talk. I know just how he felt. I couldn't either.

A brain attack is a strange experience, especially if you have aphasia. You are trying to talk to the doctor and he hears nothing but strange sounds. At least Kirk Douglas could walk which was wonderful at his age and after what he had already put his body through.

They have medicine for depression which some times does not help as Kirk found out. Thank God for an ego and a wonderful sense of humor, which he had to have. He has a very good memory and the things he did, and is still doing for his friends and strangers will always be remembered by the world.

I got a good laugh out of his thoughts of death where he appeared in front of an old man and asked him if he was in heaven. The old man roared, "THAT'S WHERE YOU CAME FROM, don't you like what I gave you on earth, this is a RECYCLING PLANT, where humans are made of dust and in the end return to dust!" For some of us it is our heaven, the Earth! That why we are in no hurry to leave.

It's wonderful that a man of Kirks age can write a book while he is recovering from a stroke. And, not just a book, but also an excellent book, which will help anyone with any kind of disability problem who reads it. For others it's just an excellent book.

Inspirational memoir
Read MY STROKE OF LUCK by Kirk Douglas, his inspirational
memoir depicting the past few years of his life . . . they have not been healthy ones for the famed actor, in that he first
was in a helicopter crash and then suffered a stroke.

But he has managed to survive both, even managing to
resume his acting career . . . you'll be moved by both his
upbeat attitude and sense of humor as he faced many life
events that have unfortunately gotten the best of many
others . . . I don't know if I would be able to maintain Douglas' grace, but I would make every attempt to do so.

This book is a "must" for anybody who has suffered a
stroke or knows anybody who has . . . in addition, movie
fans will like it for the many reminisces sprinkled throughout.

There were many memorable passages; among them:
What a hard life she [my mother] endured. I kept studying
her face. My mother's eyes opened and she stared at my face,
filled with anxiety. She smiled softly and squeezed my hand
gently. Her eyes, almost black on her white face, seemed to be
looking through me. She whispered, "Don't be afraid, it happens
to everyone." She took a deep breath and exhaled. The air came
out of her mouth like a slowly deflating balloon. She stopped
breathing.

The world is filled with people who have suffered from one misfortune or another. The only thing that sets one apart from the rest is the desire and the attempt to help others. People who reach out beyond their pain, out into the world in a trusting way-they are the ones who make a difference. Nietzsche said, "He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how."

Why? Because deep down we know that what matters in this life
is more than winning for ourselves. What matters in this life
is helping others win, even if it means slowing down and changing our course. We all want happiness. Life teaches us that we achieve happiness when we seek the happiness and well-being of others.

A truly inspiring book
Mr. Douglas chronicles his debilitating stroke, and how it changed his life. He pays tribute to those who helped him, and also tells us of the things he learned along the way.

A must-read book, which shows the REAL Kirk Douglas--an exceptionally brave man, and a wonderful human being.
