A thought-provoking introduction
Although this is one of Dr. Diamond's earlier books, and many of the ideas contained in it have been expanded in his more recent publications, it remains one of my favorites. Here we have on introduction to many of the concepts the form the foundation of Dr. Diamond's philosophy of life and health. The writing is clear and accessible; if you like this book, you are likely to enjoy others by this author.

Just a short note
Dear interested readers, although I live in the US I ordered from Amazon UK to get a hold of the paperback version of this book. I just received it this weekend. The 6 chapters which were available for "snake oil" are quite medical and speaks mostly about the fact that most alternative medicine is never been proven to work. I haven't read it all yet, so I can't not yet get specific
the most part of the book are articles written by John from 1989 till a few days before his untimely death. The topics are as varied as they come: Geneva, Yiddish, cancer, book reviews etc. Those are mostly more upbeat written then the first 6 chapters.

To conclude: I love his writing style. I'm sorry I haven't gotten a chance to see or hear any of his shows like in the UK. He leaves behind a great legacy.

Life Energy in Music Notes on Music and Sound

An exciting new perspective on music
I was fascinated by this collection of papers that explore some of Dr. Diamond's earliest work on the importance of music. We all know that music is an incredibly powerful medium, and at last we have a clinician and researcher who is examining the how and why of this in detail. One of the most exciting messages of this book is that we are all musicians. Some (like me) are trained - and the training can turn out to be a good or a bad thing depending how and by whom it was given, but the majority (the lucky ones!) are not ... and we all, whatever our previous musical experience, can use our music to bring about changes in our lives and in the lives of those around us. This is an inspiring book: a mixture of the practical and the philosophical. It will open the minds of professionals and amateurs alike to what must surely be the true purpose of music in our society.

Amazing information on the power of music
In this book Dr. Diamond presents his research into the healing power of music which is just fascinating. Based on 30 years of research and clinical medical practice, the information has helped me as both a musician, in my teaching and in my work using music therapeutically.

This is a wonderful book and I will definitely read Volumes 2 and 3 now. Thank you Dr. Diamond!

Amazing information on healing power of music!
This is a great book! Dr. Diamond presents research on various aspects of the healing ability of music and clearly delineates some problems people have in life as well as in their music making - and how to solve them.

As a musician and healer, this book has given me many insights into how to make my music more healing and also to help me in my teaching others. I will certainly read Volumes 2 and 3 now. Thank you Dr. Diamond!

Life Energy - Using The Meridians To Unlock The Hidden Power Of Your Emotions
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Creativity Publishing (01 March, 1992)

Just dopey.
I'm ashamed at myself for even reading this garbage.

Acupuncture meridians and the Emotions
In this ground-breaking book, Dr. Diamond presents his research findings concerning the links between specific acupuncture meridians and various precisely delineated emotional states. The connection between the acupuncture meridians and the organs of the body has been known about for centuries, and underlies much Chinese, Japanese and Korean traditional healing, and with Dr. Diamond's work connecting the meridians and the emotions we now have a link between the emotions and the physical body. Although it has been accepted that our emotional state can affect our physical well-being, and vice versa, Dr. Diamond's pioneering research is the first to examine this mechanism in detail.

This book should be required reading for anyone practicing, or hoping to practice the healing arts, either through conventional or through complementary medicine.

The Emotions: Link Between Mind and Body
This book is a revelation! How does qi (chi) flow through the body and what impedes its flow? Dr. Diamond's research reveals that our Life Energy is basically EMOTIONAL with each acupuncture meridian representing a different aspect of our emotional make-up. Positive emotions represent a healthy flow of Life Energy while negative emotions represent an impedence of this flow. How can we transform our lives? By transmuting our emotions. This concept is so simple and its ramifications so profound that it is a wonder that noone has elucidated it with such clarity up until now. I cannot recommend this book highly enough, both for the health-conscious reader and the holistic health care practitioner!

The Diamond Hunters
This book is one of Wilbur Smith's early books and it shows.
After reading his books set in ancient Egypt, I bought this thinking it would be a good read. He spent too much time on the relationships and too little time on the meat of the story which should have been the search for the elusive diamonds. I was able to finish it but was very disappointed particularly with the ending. It was as if he ran out of steam or got into a hurry. The ending in the book just left you wishing that he would have given you a little more to tie up the loose ends. Not a bad book but, not a great one either.

rated comparatively with Wilbur's others
i have read all of Wilbur's books and found that one learns a lot about Africa (with a few exceptions). you learn african history, economics, social problems, environmental problems, natural history, etc. in this one, you learn about the diamond industry and the history of the Namibian diamond coasts, while Wilbur weaves it into his "unputdownable" story. kind of like the Master of the Game with substance. for an even better look at Namibian history, try the Burning Shore.

Early, but Excellent
This book is one of Smith's early books - originally published in the mid-70's, I think, and anyone who's read a lot of Wilbur Smith (like me) will be able to tell. It's shorter, and he's definitely refined his writing style since then. However, his talent for plot twists, engaging characters and sucking you right into the story is still there - I loved this book! It is well worth it for anyone who likes a rip-roaring adventure!

A Brilliant Introduction to Behavioral Kinesiology
When I first read this book in the early 80's, it profoundly changed my life. The idea that there is an innate body wisdom that guides us, physically as well as ethically and spiritually, was a revelation to me. And the fact that this body wisdom could be known through objective means was a real eye (and heart!)opener. Dr. Diamond's pioneering work with the thymus gland is the basis for much of current immunology as well as mind-body therapy and interpersonal ethics. This is a classic that everyone interested in holistic health should read -- as well as everyone who practices holistic medicine or purports to to use kinesiological testing therapeutically.

A Health Classic
This book is a classic of its kind. Although it is probably best known for its discussion of the kinesiological muscle test, it is ultimately more important for showing that stimuli, whether physical or otherwise, effect our Life Energy constantly for better or worse. Furthermore, these effects tend to be the same for all observers: uncousciously, this painting, that food and so on all effect us the same, regardless of what we think in our conscious minds. This, of course, is a remarkable discovery, and the implications of it have been explored more fully by Dr. Diamond in many of his subsequent works. In short, this has to be one of the most important health books of the twentieth century.

Practical and inspiring - essential!
I first read this book in the early 1980s, and I have referred to it ever since for its highly practical suggestions on ways to reduce stress and enhance creativity. I have also used Diamond's discussion of "Stress and Cerebral Balance" as a text in teaching communication in college courses. While I understand that the use of kinesiological testing by those not professionally trained has turned out to be a more difficult and complex matter than suggested in this early work, the results of Dr. John Diamond's research are as relevant today as they were when this book was first published in 1979. This book truly laid the groundwork for Dr. Diamond's wonderful subsequent writings, which have developed and refined his work. And here, as always, Dr. Diamond's prose is wonderful reading -- robust, down-to-earth, and entertaining!

Good Fitzgerald short stories....
For those who like F. Scott Fitzgerald, this is a really good book; for those who for their own reasons dislike him, here they are going to find more of the same.

In this book are contained around five or so of Fitzgerald's stories; in them, his writing style seems as being youthful: more 'This Side of Paradise' and playful than contrived. The title story is clever and more-or-less a fairy tale; for every echo of Maugham that you can find in some of these stories, there are two or three echoes hinting that Fitzgerald grasped a lot of the wicked strangeness of the world and class more like J.D. Salinger....

This is a really good book.... and for ..., if you haven't read it, buy it in company with another book to save on shipping....

The essential role of bioenergy to health and happiness.
John Diamond's ground breaking work, "Life Energy," teaches us about the essential role of the acupuncture meridians to our emotional health, how to effectively diagnose the meridian disruptions at the basis of illness, and ways to transmute negative emotionality into life-sustanining energy. I highly recommend this book to my seminar participants to assist them in helping others as well as themselves. --Fred P. Gallo, Ph.D., author "Energy Psychology"

Great Overview, but needs an editor
The content of the book is a great way for Java programmers to get an overview of the J2EE APIs and Java-based Web applications with reasonable hands-on depth. I can't say enough in that regard. More depth requires more specific books, but that's just due to the size of J2EE. However, the editing on this book is just short of awful. There are numerous typos and non-grammatical sentences. Part of this is obviously insufficient attention given to the writing of non-native speakers. The approach differs radically from chapter to chapter, ranging from elaborated regurgitation of the documentation (useful due to its experienced commentary) to teaching almost solely by example. In one chapter, the author's coding style is full of distracting peculiarities. If he were consistent in their use, it may not be so distracting, and his at time really strange departures from common control structure idioms leaves you guessing. If the chapter weren't so strong from an architecture and design perspective, you would wonder about his command of Java. All in all, I recommend this book as in introductory cram course on J2EE, but the Wrox multi-team approach broke down somewhat here.

Strong on individual topics, but weak on their integration
This is one of the earliest J2EE 1.2 book that hit the market and it does a decent job. Coverage on individual topics such as servlets, JSP's, and EJB's are good and coherent. I especially like the EJB topic which spans 6 chapters that gives a lot of details and guidance in architecting your apps using EJB's. Other J2EE topics like JDBC, JNDI, RMI, XML, JMS, and JavaMail also received adequate coverage in the book. Compared with the book by Perrone et al. (Sams), this one is more focused and more in depth.

However, I am somewhat disappointed by the lack of substances (i.e., code, code, code to a developer like myself!) in the later chapters that deal with design strategies. It will have been a lot better if the book used an integrated sample to illustrate how to implement the design principles layed out in chapters 24 and 25. Instead, we have a chapter (30) which basically borrows a canned sample from Orion Server release, which in itself is OK but is not tightly related to earlier chapters. So if you already have servlets and JSP experience and would like to add EJB/JMS to the mix, I wouldn't recommend this book. Pick up the new book from Wrox on BEA WebLogic Server instead.

Thorough but not for beginners; Must have as a reference
Each topic is covered very well. But if you do not know the topic already then it is a little too much detail. In my opinion this can be used as a good reference to all the individual topics covered. For example, I worked with RMI before and found the chapter on RMI broadened my concept significantly. Similar size chapter in other books was good for beginners but the concept was not conveyed as well as in this book.

So here is my evaluation:

1. Read a tutorial or two from Javasoft on a given topic (including EJB). Then go through this book on that topic and you will find it much easier to follow.

2. Once you know the absolute basics you will know which sections to skip or read in detail. You will notice that they try to cover every little detail even though in some cases it may require a little more explanation.

3. Understand the fact that each topic can be a book of its own size.

4. I have seen some grammatical errors but given the difficult subject matters and the recentness of them I can definitely ignore them.

5. The book would have been better if a quick introduction was given with a simple but good example then if it went into the detail.

6. They probably should have given a bit more examples as they dove into the details but as it is the book is too thick to the point that it is bit difficult to handle. I wish they made it a multi-volume book and not a hard cover.
