Beautiful and Engaging
Beautiful drawings of Africian animals.A wonderful and sweet story of animals in Africia. Children of all ages will love this book.
Engaging, sweetly illustrated, and educational
Rhino and his East African animal pals, huggably drawn, are playing hide and seek. On one page, animals are hiding, camoflauged in their native habitat; on the next page, they jump out and run away from the rhino. The book follows this pattern through desert, plains, swamp, etc. Older kids can learn about camoflauge, the East African environment, and the names of 60+ different species (there's a guide on the endpapers). But the book is also appropriate for preschoolers, as it's very colorful and light on text. My two-year-old loves hunting for the hidden animals on every page.
Fun, educational, and sweetly illustrated
Rhino is playing hide and seek with his huggably-drawn East African animal pals. One page shows animals camoflauged in a specific habitat; the next shows the animals bounding away. The book continues like this through desert, swamp, plains, etc. My two-year-old has a great time hunting for the hidden animals. This book is very light on text and suitable for preschoolers, but also seems appropriate for older children. The endpapers contain an illustrated guide to the many species depicted throughout the book, so kids can learn the difference between a vulturine fish eagle and a lesser swamp warbler!

How the Sun... review
A good story but in my opinion ther's nothing special about the pictures.
Bain de Soleil
My mom bought a copy of this book...about 20 years ago. She got it because it reminded me of a sampler she had made depicting chicks in front of a blazing sun. It was one of my top fives as a kid. When I found it again here, I was beside myself. It arrived speedily, and in perfect shape at that. This virtual thrift shopping is a good substitue for the real thing!

Gregory the Terrible Eater
Gregory likes normal food; eggs, vegetables, fruit, and fish. Normal food, for a normal kid, right? Wrong! You see Gregory isn't exactly normal well not in his family's eyes. To them, normal food is tin cans, boxes, tires, and mostly garbage. Well that is normal food...for a goat. You see, Gregory is a goat and since he likes eggs, vegetables, and fruits his parents think he is sick. But Gregory just wants to eat what he likes. So since Gregory and his parents haven't had dinner together in a while (and mothers like to have dinner with they're kids) they decide to take him to Doctor Ram. Doctor Ram has treated picky eaters before but not like Gregory. Yet, he comes up with a solution. That is to feed Gregory what he wants but to sneak in a little bit of garbage every meal... It is a good moral to the story I think it might teach kids to try stuff before they decide whether or not the like it!
Very amusing topsy-turvy story.
Gregory the Goat has an eating problem. He is a finicky eater. While his family chews contentedly away on good goat stuff-tin cans, empty cartons, used ties and so on, Gregory is busy eating "revolting" food from a goats point of view-fresh vegetables, fruit, salad, soup and so on.
What to do? At their wit's end, Gregory's parents concoct a plan-and the fun begins.
A very imaginative and engaging read, with fun dialog, bright, pleasing illustrations and a quirky sense of humor.
Gregory, the Terrible Eater
Gregory is a kid just like you and me. He loves carrots, fish, orange juice, lettuce, and ice cream. Oh, and did I mention that Gregory is a goat?
Gregory's parents tried to raise a nice "kid." They feed him tin cans, tires, and bottle caps, but Gregory, the terrible eater, refuses to eat any dinner. In a desperate attempt to find out what's wrong with him, Gregory's parents take him to Dr. Ram, and tells them what to do...
Well naturally, along with every story children's story I have been able to get a hold of, "Gregory, the Terrible Eater," has a very charming moral. Ever had a child who refused to eat his or her dinner, maybe you're looking for a way to delight your child with a pleasing story, or maybe you have a son named "Greg." Either way, I can assure you that you'll love this story written by Mitchell Sharmat.
As far as the pictures go (every child loves stories with pictures in them!) Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey have made the story come to life with brilliant colors and vivid drawings. In conclusion, you have nothing to lose with this adorable tale of Gregory, the Terrible Eater!

A lesson to learn by imitating!
I really enjoyed reading this story to my students and working with activities that went along with the book. For example miming the action words in the book, drawing, and writing a book report. This is wonderful story about a chick and a duck who hatch at the same time and become friends. The chick imitates the duck until the duck goes for a swim. However, the chick attempts to swim, but can't and is rescued by the duck. The Chick realizes that it is ok not to do everything the duck does. The duck can go for a swim with out him. The moral of the story, sometimes it is perfectly ok to imitate, but at other times be yourself, do your own things and have your own ideas.
Great for Early Childhood students.
This book is great for showing how chicks and ducks are the same, and different, in an entertaining way. It is an emergent reader book, that uses repetition and predictability to help young readers along. My Kindergarten class really loves this book. I've seen it in Big Book format, but can't find it here. Oh, well! Buy this one if you don't have it.
The chick copied the duckling until it sank in the water.
Ashleigh favorite part was when the chick sank. It makes me feel like I can save my friend. Ashley liked the part when the duckling dug a hole. I liked the illustrations.

unusual tale
Dorin and the Dragon is a book that begs for a sequel. There is much in the story that is left untold. It breaks many fairy tale stereotypes, which is refreshing: a prince (youngest of 3) angers his father and is banished but unlike other cinderella variants of this type, there is no reconcilliation. He makes a family for himself that will not break faith --only his new father is a Dragon! In a lot of ways, it is a fairy tale for modern life, where your family may not be what you are told it should be, by society, but it gives you what you need nonetheless. Also, Dorin finds he needs to lie to the Dragon in order to give them both what they need, this makes me uneasy about the story but I reluctantly admit, it is more realistic than the behavior typical of fairytales.

My sister is not a reader, meaning she does not like to read, yet the book held her attention. She finished it in a weekend. This book is cute, interesting, and appropriate for prepubescent females.

Rum Pum Pum
My mother read this story to me when I was little. I adored the story becuase of the repetitive rhyme, and the cunning of the bird. While some might say that the story seems a bit violent, I think that the way the bird travels across the land to rescue his beloved from the selfish king demonstrates a fantastic lesson in love and devotion. The illustrations were wonderful too. For example, when the various things travelling with the bird crawled into his ear in order to make the journey, (the stick, the ants, the river, the cats) the pictures showed them up in the corner of the page, and it delighted my imagination to think that so many things could fit into the ear of such a small bird.

Star of the circus review
Star of the Circus By Michael Sampson Reading Level 1.3
If you are from ages 4 to 6, this is the right book for you! I think you should get this book because the illustrations are very creative and colorful. If you like circuses and animals you should get this book. A short description of the story is that it's about the different animals wanting to be the star of the circus.

Great book to introduce the concept of camouflage!
This book is a fantastic way to show young children how animals use camouflage. The colorful drawings show the chameleon trying to sneak up on his dinner (insects) while predators (owl, snake, fox) sneak up on him. When the chameleon changes color and hides into his surrounding, the confused expressions on the predators' faces are cute. This book starts out slow, but then gets going once the first predator appears. Children really get excited when they find the hidden chameleon in each picture.

Runaway Marie Louise
As a child, this was one of my favorite books. I loved the idea of running away if I was spanked for being naughty, as Marie Louise does in this book. Marie Louise, a mongoose, visits several other species of mothers in her search for a new mother. After consulting the mysterious star-spangled Witch Toad (my favorite character) she discovers that her own mother is running away, too. They decide to return to their thatched hut in the sugar cane field together. This ending appealed to me in a variety of ways. Marie Louise discovers that her own mother is the best, after all. When I was six, it was hard to believe that at times, but "Runaway Marie Louise" helped me realize that your parents will still love you even when you're naughty. Maybe I should have read this book as a teenager, too. Marie Louise's mother says, "It would be lonely with no one to love and care for." That applies to everyone. We all desire solitude, but after a time crave loving companionship, and someone to "make a fluffy, puffy omelet" for us.
