An ok book
My book was Lostman's River. The author is Cynthia Defelice. The main caricature is Tyler MacCuley how was hiered by a man ro be his guide. But somthing goes teribly wrong. If you want to find out read this your self.It is a good book for 5th graders.
great book
This is the second book Ive read by DeFelice, and although I liked Weasel, This book was even better. Tyler and his family live on this river in Fla. Tyler likes the simplicties this life has brought. One day a stranger arrives and basicly tricks Tyler and his family to expose a exotic bird rookery. The stranger ended up being a poacher. Others arrive while Tyler and the stranger are at the rookery, and a deadly confrontation takes place. Tyler then has to get out alive and must decide how to deal with the events that have taken place. There are no simple answers to these questions, and the book does not have a happy ending, but a realistic one. Great story for young and old alike!!
Lostman's River
This is an excellent book. Lostman's River will keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the story. Why are Tyler, Carrie, Mama and Papa in Florida? Why did they leave New York in the first place? These are all questions that will be answered when you read the story. The MacCauley's or shall I say the McLeod's haven't had any visitors in many years. Why are they all of a sudden recieving so many visitors now? All of these questions and many many more that will spur in your mind will be answered i f you decide to read this book. Cynthia DeFelice is an excellent writer who knows how to bring imagery and emotions to life. She has written many novels and most of them have won awards. Weasel is another wonderful book byu Cynthia DeFelice.

An Average Book
This book was an easy read, and was okay, but nothing special. The book explores the medical technology of the 19th century, which, to say the least, was not much. Lucas Whitaker blames himself for the perishing of his family, and sets out to spread the word of a so called "cure" for consumtion (tuberculosis). He becomes the apprentice to a doctor, who disapproves of the theory of his medical research. (Which was non-existant. Lucas heard of the cure from a neighbor, who had heard it from relatives, who had gotten it from friend, and well, you get the idea.) An okay book, worth reading if you're bored.
The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker
I really enjoyed reading "The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker". The story is based upon actual evidence that was discovered in 1990 about a cure for the consumption or, as it is known today, TB. This "cure" was practiced in the ninteenth century and included digging up victims of the consumption who were supposedly "undead". I found it fascinating to learn that people actually believed in this type of cure. We can see today how far we have come in the practice of modern medicine. The main character, Lucas Whitaker, becomes apprenticed to a country doctor after his family dies of the consumption. Feeling guilty because he could not save his mother, Lucas tries to help others by using the cure that he learns about from a neighbor. The doctor does not believe in the cure and tries to help Lucas see the truth. Lucas' journey from belief in superstition to scientific reasoning is the main theme of the book. I believe that middle school students would enjoy the story for its macabre theme and for the fascinating look into the life of a nineteenth century doctor. The inclusion of bodies, amputations, and a tooth drawing give the story a grisly touch that young readers will enjoy.
The Apprenticeship of Lucas Whitaker
After 12 year old Lucas Whitaker watches his whole familyslowly die from consumption he decides to move away from all hispainful memories. After he leaves home he spends the days walking and the nights sleeping in barnes. Then one day while he is walking down the roads of Southwick,Connecticut Lucas sees a HELP WANTED sign.Lucas nocks on the door and a stern looking women named Mrs.Bunce answers it.As Lucas recalls his story to the kindly Doc.Beecher,he is overcome by grief and guilt.Well Lucas got the job and likes it well enough, but there are a few minor details Lucas thinks he could live without. It goes on to say that Lucas beleives with all his heart in a strange cure for this life taking disease, but Lucas finally relizes in the end that its just a hopeful superstition.
Well I thought this was a remarkable book!It was definantly worth reading! ...

Too weird for my five year old
My son excels as a reader and checked this out on one of his preschool trips to the library. It is definitely for older kids, maybe seven or eight. He didn't understand the plot very well and trying to explain it to him proved to be... interesting. I would suggest steering clear of this if your child is 5 or younger.
Award winner
Cold Feet was awarded the Boston Globe's Horn book award for this year. The book is a droll, macabre tale with just the right mix of humor and gore to delight kids. Bob Parker's paintings keep it vigoruos and fun.

Kelly's opinion of Death at Devil's Bridge: Boring
Ben and Jeff get caught up with a life-threating drug situation. A red Porsche is found in the water and the body of Cameron Maddox was found at Devil's Bridge. Ben and Jeff start to deal drugs, get involved in the the murder, and try to stay alive.
My reaction to the story was that its plot was like the movies. You know what's going to happen, but it still surpises you. The characters seem realistic. Reaching a point of interest in this book was hard. The part that got me to read was when they found the red Porsche in the water. The story started to go downhill then back uphill. It was also too short. Cynthia DeFelice could have added a twist to the plot, and more details about places.
If somebody asked me about the book, I would say its somewhat average. I'm not a big mystery fan, but if I was, I think its average like I said earlier. Parts of the book were excellent. Some of the concepts in this book is for mature young people. I would recommend Death at Devil's Bridge to people ages 11 and up.

A Must Read
This is one of the best books I've ever read.
When Ben's best friend Jeff starts hanging out with Dopnny, who is older than the two, Ben learns that Donny is up to no good. Read this and fing out how a sunken car, a missing person, and the sale of drugs tie in to a great novel. It teaches about peer preasure and how and how not to handle it.
