Simple foods from a by gone era that are easy to prepare, and interesting to learn about while cooking. This cookbook gives the average reader a flare for more homespun tastes.

This book includes not only authentic recipes, but the background on the style and variations of many of them.

Very informative and enjoyable to read.

Richly illustrated volume on the Civil War solider
"The Fighting Men of the Civil War" is one of the "Rebels and Yankees" trilogy put together by William C. Davis and Technical Advisor Russ Pritchard. As with all of these volumes, the text is okay but it is the illustrations that make this book a necessary part of any Civil War collection. There are dozens of historical photographs, most of which you have probably never seen before, along with color artwork by Jeff Burn that illustrate the difference between the uniform of a private in the Washington Light Infantry and the 56th US Colored Infantry, or an Army of the Tennessee "Bummer." But the real gems in this book are the contemporary photographs of artifacts and collections that make looking through this book like touring a museum. There are displays of Confederate Prisoner of War handicrafts, Union cavalry carbines, Southern banknotes and Union Musical equipment. In this book you will find pictures of things you have read about from the Civil War but never seen. These books are extremely useful for anyone writing about the war as either history or fiction and trying to get the details right.

Adopt this book!
Davis tells the story of the how the Orphan Brigade came about which also covers daily camp life, individual stories and how the regiments formed. It is very clear just how the regiments were grouped and organized through descriptive writing. Many stories of soldiers hard fighting in their history at places such as Shiloh, Chickamauga, Murfreesboro and their dreaded marches in Mississippi around Vicksburg is covered. This book answers questions I had like: Just how did they fight? Who was in command? Who died? What became of the regiments after their numbers dwindled? Davis easily answers all of these and tells the story of the Orphan Brigade from beginning to end. This book is great for anyone looking to gain information on Western Campaigns and gain further knowledge on Kentuckians who had the odds stacked against them. It is perfect to gain an understanding about Kentucky in the Civil War and those who chose to fight for the south that lived there.

entertaining and at the same time tragic
This is the story of the brigade (in the Civil War, from 5000 to 2000 men or so depending on the stage of the war) of Kentuckians who fought for the Confederacy. Kentucky being occupied relatively early in the war, they fought on far from home through the war.

Davis does well at covering the breadth of experience of soldiers: the life of the private in the ranks, as well as of the senior officer, is well researched. He captures the unique cultural distinctions of Kentucky quite nicely: masters at obtaining bourbon, an informal approach, raw courage, and love of horses. The bungling of generals is not soft-pedaled, which is just as well considering how much the Orphans suffered from it.

Worth adding to any Civil War library, but of particular interest to Kentuckian history buffs.

The ultimate illustrative look at Civil War officers
"Commanders of the Civil War" represents itself as "An account of the lives of the commissioned officers during America's war of succession." However, more than an account William C. Davis and Technical Advisor Russ A. Pritchard use a collection of photographs of historical and personal memorabilia to great effect. For example, in the first chapter of the book there are pictorial spreads of personal memorabilia for Stonewall Jackson and George Gordon Meade. Other contemporary photographs show a dozen different swords, even more service revolvers, or a set Confederate naval china. In addition to dozens of old photographs, many of which will be new to all but the most avid Civil War buff, there are colored drawings by Jeff Burn of different uniform types that will help you distinguish between a Union Officer of Infantry, Artillery and Calvary. The text is certainly information regarding the great and lesser known military leaders of the war, but the photographs and illustrations truly overwhelm the words. It will remind you of looking at displays in a museum so just take your time and enjoy each photograph. You will enjoy "Commanders of the Civil War" as well as the other volumes in the "Rebels and Yankees" series.

Well Done!
Davis and Pritchard have created a wonderful work that is sure to become a hit with anyone who studies the Civil War. This book uses words and a generous amount of pictures to tell the story of the leaders, both talented and flawed that held together the two struggling armies in a time of chaos and devastating loss. Although many of the stories have been told in one form or another, "Commanders..." compiles this study in a single book that makes it very easy to compare and contrast the styles and techniques employed by officers of both armies. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it to others. I look forward to reading the next book in the 'Rebels and Yankees' series.

A simply masterful presentation of Seurat's work
This beautiful catalog from an exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1992 is an excellent anthology of Seurat's work, juxtaposing finished works with sketches, and includes a large selection of sketches as a student. The size allows the works to be displayed in all their glory. If you like Seurat, buy this!

Fantastic
I felt that this book is the best overall catalog of the work of Stuart Davis. It includes an enormous amount of color and black and white pictures of his paintings and of himself. It also includes a good synopsis of his life and extrordinary career. If you need a book on Stuart Davis than this is the best.

Seeing Business With New Eyes
:::2020 Vision::: Stan Davis and Bill Davidson Simon & Schuster (c) 1991 ISBN 0-671-73237-4 I just finished the book last week, and I think I want to read it again already. There are so many new ideas and concepts that it's hard for me to really remember them. Besides, this new economy that the book is about is such a different way of thinking for me that it's not just a matter of incorporating some new suggestions into the same mindset that I've always had -- 2020 Vision is really about looking at business and management in a whole new way; the mindset itself is different. When I read phrases like "the new economy," or "informationalize your business," I'm usually a more than a little skeptical. "Yeah, right," I used to think all this talk about an "information economy" was about looking up answers to questions and trying to sell each other last week's baseball scores. I no longer think so. I took the book home largely because one of the promotional blurbs on the back cover was by Tom Peters, who said "If Stan Davis' Future Perfect was the 'book of the decade' for the '80s (and I think it was), then his and Bill Davidson's 2020 Vision may well be the 'book of the '90s.' 2020 Vision is not for the faint of heart. It is a provocative masterpiece that puts almost all other 'futurist' treatises to shame." Well! How could I resist a challenge like that? Besides, I read Future Perfect back in the '80s, and it was indeed brilliant. I'd have to agree with Tom Peters about Davis and Davidson's book. Not only did I begin to understand that we really are in the midst of a new economy -- and thus a new era of mankind's social relationships, thinking and enterprise -- but even as I was reading through the chapters my mind began to be crowded with all sorts of new ideas not just for improvements in the way I'm already doing business, but whole new businesses! Now, how many books have you read lately that both stimulate the imagination and suggest immediately practical solutions for everyday problems, all at once? Practical and exciting, 2020 Vision has important lessons for virtually every business, not just those we may first think of when things "high tech" or "computerized" are mentioned. Officers of large corporations as well as one-person home-based business-people will all be doing themselves, their customers, and their businesses a tremendous favor by reading this important and entertaining book.

Excellent Story About Brave Young People
I found this story to be very inspiring. The author does a great job of including historic details. This is a story about brave young men in a battle that receives very little attention from popular historians.
