Informative. The future of American Transportation.
This book examines the existing transportation delema that we face, with the ever bourgening automobile mode of travel. The Future of sustainable Transportation is possible with new technologies, and is outlined in this book. A must read if you are worried about the tons of pollutants that you as an individual are pumping into the atmosphere

An excellent resource for students writing reports on EVs.
This book is a must read for anyone interested in electric vehicles and their possible role in the future of the United States transportation industry. Sperling's writing style is clear and easy to understand, and his ideas are well-developed and soundly grounded in science. This book makes an excellent resource for students writing on electric vehicles (the main reason I picked it up) or anyone simply interested in electric vehicles as an alternative form of transportation for themselves or their community. After reading, the reader is thoroughly convinced that the development and promotion of electric vehicles are necessary if we are to avert the impending ecological disaster caused by polluted air and the looming gas crunch.

A capable, though not outstanding, work on Jackson
Certainly one of the most ingenious commanders of the Civil War, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson provides an interesting profile for a biographer. He was a brilliant commander, and led his troops on grinding marches for days at a time in order to secure gallant victories in the face of insurmountable odds. When he died Robert E. Lee lamented that he had lost his right arm, and indeed Jackson's loss was deeply felt by the Confederacy.

There was more to this man, however, than just the brilliant military strategist. He was also a devout man of God, humble and ever-willing to submit to the Divine will and give Him all the glory for his many victories. Behind General Jackson there was Jackson the believer, and the latter is just as much a part of Stonewall's history as the former.

Burke Davis does a decent job of narrating Jackson's life, though not extraordinary. The battle sequences are vague and difficult to follow, and the maps provide no assistance whatsoever. Davis frequently assumes he knows what Jackson was thinking, and often tells us just how Jackson felt about something. Sources are not cited, and we are left to wonder how much of the story is actually based on fact, and how much on speculation.

Davis's biography is satisfactory, but it does not do Stonewall's military actions justice. Some of the maneuvers he made and the victories he had were downright brilliant, and Davis leaves much to be desired in this respect. Still, the biography gives a decent portrait of Jackson's life. There are many biographies on Stonewall Jackson out there, and I would recommend this one only if none of the others are available (as in my city's library).

Stonewall
A very enjoyable, well written biography on the man they called "Stonewall". Without prior knowledge, the lack of maps makes it hard to get a full grasp on the 62 Valley Campaign and other battles. If not for this, it would have definately been rated at five stars.

Crazy Ray's Review
Burke Davis continues among my favorite Civil War authors. In this work, he introduces you to Jackson, the whole man. His triumphs, defeats, joys, sorrows, and last but not least his genius on the art of warfare. A must read. enjoy!

a gripping collection of first-person view of war's end
Mr. Davis has collected an impressive selection of first person accounts of the the last 9 days of the Army of Northern Viginia and the inevitable collapse of the Confederacy. Some of the accounts are contemporanious and others are the reminisences of veterans in later years but in all of them the reader can feel that those present knew that they were seeing history being made at its most intense. The comments of starving men, who doubtless at the time could think of little more than food, still brings us their views of events between foraging expeditions. The Army of Northern Virginia was footsore, starved and exhausted and was being pursued by an army well feed, well mounted, with good boots and nearly as tired but all there could see how it was going to end. Some resisted the idea of surrender while others believed that further bloodshed was futile and had been for over a year. Most Confederates tried to press on if only to follow Lee. Read Chamberlan's "The Passing of the Armies" and you will get the Victorian school masters prose. Read Davis and the flavor of the armies spoken language comes out. As a played out North Carolina private put it so well when captured by a Union cavalryman who said "I got you Johnnie", "A hell of a git you got" was the reply

Narrating history in the fluid style of a novel
To Appomattox by Civil War expert Burke Davis is an expertly researched, historically grounded, deftly written retelling of the last nine days of the Civil War. Narrating history in the fluid style of a novel, yet as accurate as records and all sources of information can allow, To Appomattox characterizes General Lee, his troops, and a nation weary of war in a vivid, dramatic, engaging, manner. To Appomattox is a welcome and strongly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Civil War Studies reference collections.

Another winner for Davis
Burke Davis has hit homeruns with other Civil War books on the fall of Richmond and the flight of Jefferson Davis, on Sherman's March, and a good bio of J.E.B. Stuart. This one follows the Confederate defenders of Petersburg and Richmond til the surrender at Appomattox. This book uses tons of first person accounts based on letters, diaries, newspaper articles, and memoirs. Davis writes in a crisp, readable style that will keep you turning the pages. Much has been written about Lee's surrender at Appomattox and this is surely one of the best books on the subject from a Confederate point of view.

Marine!
Marine! is a book for anyone who enjoys hearing about military. It gives an in depth look into the life of this great Marine gerneral. Is fighting through nigaragua and hati. His service at the battle of Guadacanal, and the Korean War. This book expressed Puller's incredible leadership, and moral raising presence. It even goes into his battle with the government and military hierarcy. If you like military, you'll really enjoy Chesty Puller's "give 'em hell attitude" and determination. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys action and military books.

Burke Davis, my Grandfather writes great books.
Burke Davis is my grandfather on my mom's side. My mom, Angela Davis-Gardner, has written two books, "Felice" and "Forms of Shelter". Burke Davis has written 50 or more. I'm 14 now, but when I was about 7 I read Mr. Lincoln's Whiskers. I loved it! I have all of his books and this is the best children's one. I recommend this to see about another side of Abraham Lincoln

Teaching African American Literature: Theory and Practice

This book strikes against the mariginalization of A/A lit.
The authors chosen for this edited work write in a reader-friendly manner. The theory of teaching African American literature is grounded in classroom practice. Individual works of authors along with different genres are discussed and placed in the context of classroom instruction. The struggles that are encountered in an attempt to incorporate A/A lit is also discussed. This is a great resource for educators to have. I also found the compiled bibliography very useful. A very candid, thoughtful piece of work.

Interesting, strange, but ultimately unsatisfying
If you are looking for a detailed account of the Cowpens and/or Guilford Courthouse battles, look elsewhere (I much prefer Babit's "A Devil of a Whipping" for Cowpens). But there is a fair amount of detail of the marching and skirmishing between the two. Unfortunately, the few maps do little to support the text. The Guilford Courthouse map is cramped by trying to show the entire battle on one page and DOESN'T HAVE A SCALE. Considering that an entire chapter is devoted to Cowan's Ford, one might expect it to show up somewhere on a map. It would also have been nice to see the march routes on a map. The primary redeeming social value of the book is the last chapter on "The Lessons." The author does some quality analysis of what could have been learned.
