What does stylistics studies?
First thing in order to get good profit of this book is to be aware of the date of its first publication (around 60's). Since then much have been discussed about both Stylistics and Linguistics but by that time the authors pointed out a few good important elements do discuss the uses of language with a scientific approach. If you don't have a background on the Stylistics studies, remember that this book brings a very specific view of what stylistics is and which aspects stylistics should focus on.

According to the authors Stylistics is the branch of linguistics that studies aspects of language variations. Considering that for each social situation one uses a different kind of language skills, Stylistics should study and analyse these variations according to social backgrounds and cultural contexts. Stylistics would focus on some of the same language aspects of nowadays Social Linguistics but looking for what Charles Bally called the expressive face of language.

The book is full of good analysis of uses of English and can be very interesting for the ones who desire to discover this language. Crystal and Davy don't offer any example of literary text as they believe that literature deserves a more carefull aprroach. Before the task of analysing this kind of text, Stylistics would have to grow on tradition as a Discipline so that people would be prepared to face the challenge of describing literary style. Regarding on this matter and considering the importance of training stylists, they offer a method to text analysis.

I read this book over five years ago and it was so powerful that it gave me nightmares. I hope everyone in the world reads this book. If you have any interest in Australia or Tasmanian this is a book that will make you smart if you are dumb. Soak in the richness of the literature and hold your eyes wide open to the facts! Successful Management of Open-Heart Surgery Patients!
This book is based on the experience of the Paul Munk Cardiac Centre in Toronto Canada from where all the contributors come. It is divided into six sections progressing from pre-operative considerations to postoperative ward management. A third of the 40 chapters are surgically orientated but these are useful for anaesthetic trainees to read. Knowledge and understanding of each other's perspectives are essential for first class patient care and this book can provide both.

Throughout the book useful research and audit data from the Toronto computerized database is given, sometimes compared with published figures where they are available. The book has several chapters on complications and the Toronto way of avoiding and managing them, with some notable successes.

As a book this is based on one large and successful centre's way of doing things, it works. There is a selectied reading list for each chapter with mostly up-to-date articles. This handbook achieves its purpose of being a source of practical information for trainee doctors, nurses, perfusionists and other healthcare personnel involved with patients undergoing open-heart surgery. Anaesthetists on their cardiac module would find it helpful and the appendices at the back of the manual give the Toronto algorithms and protocols, from wich some departments may get useful ideas.

How some Southern editors handled desegregation in the 60s.
These nine essays take a close look at how various editors in Mississippi and the South covered the desegregation crisis of the 60s. The courage displayed by them in reporting the news accurately when the majority of their neighbors and customers felt the opposite way makes for very interesting reading. One is struck by the bravery of these editors in sticking to their sense of fair play, justice and accuracy. They played an important, and little known, role in how desegregation was finally accomplished. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to understand the South and the events of the 60s there.

Urban Drainage - Worth Every Penny
This textbook covers the environmental and engineering aspects involved in the drainage of rainwater and wastewater from areas of human development, providing a descriptive overview of the complex issues involved, basic engineering principles, and analysis for each topic. Extensive examples are used to support and demonstrate the key issues explained in the text. Urban drainage deals comprehensively not only with the design of new systems, but also the analysis and upgrading of existing infrastructure, and the environmental issues involved. Urban Drainage is an essential text for undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers and researchers in the civil engineering fields of water engineering, environmental engineering, public health engineering, engineering hydrology, and related non-engineering disciplines. It will also be a useful reference for drainage design and drainage operation engineers in local authorities and the water utilities, and for consulting engineers.

The only drawback is that as it is so up-to-date and practice based out will become outdated soon... but then there will be the 2nd Edition!

A very good overall culinary reference book
Jane Horn's "Cooking A to Z" is a fine culinary reference. Almost every entry for a food item includes advice on use, selection, storage, and seasonal availability. While recipes abound, there is a distracting inconsistency on the use of numbers-sometimes they are spelled out (one cup), and sometimes they are listed numerically (1 cup). This is especially annoying with fractions, which are spelled out throughout the book.

Still, this volume has its priorities straight, for the most part, and devotes generous space to the simple foundations of good cooking: the humble egg, knives and knife technique, and so on. Overall, this is intelligently designed and gorgeously photographed.

A Thorough and Enjoyable Reference
I saw this cookbook at my mom's house and begged for it. We are both experienced cooks, but I still have found this book very useful. There is something for everyone, with clear and helpful information ranging from mundane to exotic. I like the tips and advice more than many of the recipes, but I think most would appeal to the majority of people (I'm finicky). This high quality book is large and lays open very nicely (but do yourself a favor and buy a plastic cookbook holder/shield), the pages are thick and glossy, and there are lots of gorgeous and tempting pictures. I turn to this very readable reference book frequently. I really use the sections on how to choose particular items, from sugar snap peas to kitchen gadgets. The step-by-step directions for omelettes piqued my husband's interest (he generally hates any kind of food work) and now he is a hit on weekends!

Tantalizing pictures with deliciously entertaining text
If you are looking for a perfect cookbook for a cookbook collector, this is one they will value highly. Pictures burst from the page and are refreshingly surrounded with intersting tidbits and realistic recipes. The layout is superb and each subject is nicely highlighted for easy location while you page through 629 pages of intoxicating inspiration. The cover is practical with a plastic sheath and the book will open and stay that way on your counter. The type is easy to read with plenty of bold text for emphasis. I cannot give enough positive comments about this book. You will love it.

Need a good read...
A story soon to be a classic and a must read for anyone who has ever felt lost in the world. This story is about a young girl and her father. India Opal and her father the preacher move to a new town in northern Florida. She has trouble making friends and her father keeps himself emotionally distanced from her. He asks her to go to the grocery store and she goes but comes home with something that wasn't on the list...a dog that she named "Winn-Dixie," and it is because of Winn-Dixie that her life starts to make changes.

This book is an enjoyable read for any age. The author has done a wonderful job of setting the location of where the story is taking place, whom the character's are and gives the reader the feeling of being in the story. The text is not hard to read but some of the dialect could be difficult. There is a bit of understatement in the book that may be hard for younger reads to understand but not enough to discourage reading, the writing style is one that fits the story line.

On a personal level I highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever felt lost in the world and needed a friend. Having grown up moving around in the southern states I truly connected to this book and if nothing else this is a great book about a girl and her dog.

Because of Winn-Dixie
It's huge, it's hairy, it's a . . dog named Winn-Dixie. One day a girl named Opal goes to a grocery store for tomatoes, white rice, and macaroni & cheese, but comes back with a dog. Soon Opal finds herself making friends with a librarian, a store owner and a sweet old lady. When Opal reads Gone With the Wind to Gloria Dump (the old lady) she gets a great idea. When Winn-Dixie runs away because of his fear of thunder stores it is up to Opal to find him. I think the author was trying to say don't think you can't do thinks if something is wrong in your life. Because Opal lost her mom and she thought she could not make any friends. But that was only until she found Winn-Dixie. My opinion of the book is it was the best book I have ever read because Opal moved away from her old friends just like I had to. I would recommend this book to the fourth grade reading level and above.

A Good Book!
This book is about a girl named India Opal Buloni. She was in a grocery store buying some food when she heard the store manager yell "Get this dog out of here!" When she heard that, she said that it was her dog, which she quickly named Winn-Dixie after the store. She left, went home, and talked her father, the preacher, into letting her keep it. Opal's mom left when she was 3, and her dad moved her to Naomi, Florida. She didn't have any friends. One day, at the Herman W. Block Memorial Libary, she met Miss Franny Block, who thought Winn-Dixie was a bear. Later, Opal met other friends and got over missing her mom. I liked the story because its about the importance of family and friends. I definitely recommend this book to adults and children all over the world.

Tastes great, Less filling
I treasure "Pattern Language", the book, and was excited to see this followup. The premise of looking back at the patterns and reducing them to a few (10) "super" patterns sounded promising. The charm of the original"Pattern Language" book lay in its quirky drawings, and its reliance on the reader to reflect on any personal experiences with the particular pattern being discussed. The lack of glossy photos gave substance to concepts. The new book follows in the footsteps of the "Not so big house" books method of discussing concepts while surrounded by photos. Undoubtedly, the success of those books gave rise to the structure of this one. I find drawings infinitely more communicative of design concepts than photos. The photos here distract the eye, making it harder to focus on the principle being espoused. The authors walk you thru certain homes or rooms which supposedly illustrate the concept at hand. I found the process sort of phony and aggrandizing of the architect's vision. Hello, but the point/power of "patterns" is that they are time-tested,non- regional, gut-level design parameters not requiring architectural vision. The, after the fact, microanalysis of houses to make their every aspect seem utterly preconceived by the genius architect is sophomoric. Again, the power of these patterns is that if you put them "in play", good things, especially unforseen things, happen. Predictably. Hopefully, this book, along with the "Not so big house" books will inform the house buying/building community of design realities routinely ignored.

Great Potential, But Disappointing
I really wanted to like this book. I endorse the patterns approach to home design, and I've come to rely on Taunton Press for very high-quality construction books.

Unfortunately, "Patterns of Home" is a disappointment. It should be subtitled "How Architects Get Their Rich Clients to Build Large Homes Full of Amazingly Superfluous Detailing". A few of the example homes are very interesting, but the majority of them are overblown ostentatious mansions that most people can't possibly afford. Sadly, Sarah Suzanka, author of the "The Not So Big House" series wrote the foreward. She forgot to mention that most of the homes featured in this book are quite big.

If you have a lot of money to spend, or just want to see how the other half lives, you might find the pictures interesting. I got bored and disheartened after the first 6-7chapters.

Wonderful new book!
This book takes the main concepts in A Pattern Language and fleshes them out, illustrating them with concrete examples and explanations, and demonstating how they can work in a residential home. Some of the themes are quite practical, like capturing light and creating indoor and outdoor rooms, while others are more abstract and theoretical, like the concept of being able to look out from a protected space. All of the principles are based on human psychology and why we inherently like and feel comfortable in some places and not in others, which makes Patterns of Home much more interesting than a typical architecture book. It is a great guide for anyone that wants to design their own house or is interested in vernacular architecture in general. The photos and diagrams are great, and haven't been recycled from other Taunton Press books, which was a nice surprise. I found Patterns of Home very easy to follow and understand as it has a very organized layout that ties all the chapters and their themes together, making it an easy read in addition to everything else.

OK overview, but better alternatives exist...
The book offers a good overview of information security, though with a lot of "talk". I found myself scanning 75% of the paragraphs for the meat....I'm a software engineer, and have read "Secret's and Lies", which offers a much more thorough and better review of the subject. Buy it, instead. Not only will you get a better education, but you'll actually read the entire book instead of skimming most of it.

...Neither this nor "Secrets and Lies" will offer much specific information on security loopholes, i.e. how to hack or avoid being hacked. "Hacking Exposed" does that, however, and is a good read, too.

Easy reading; can be an eye opener
Not too technical, but very informative. Allows the reader to peer into the hacker's mindset and gives the Network Administrator the upper hand. Proactive, practical advice you'll need since the future of IT favors the "black-hat hacker".

Includes short tutorials on cryptography and VPNs. Very basic, but a good introduction.
