Excellant General Surgery Text Book
This is an excellant text book of general surgery. The book covers all the basic topics of surgery in a great mannor. There are plenty of good quality pictures and illustrations. The book is well divided into chapters. There is a summary at the end of each topic which gives a reivew of all the contents. I would highly recommend this book for rmedical students and surgical residents.

Outstanding introductory surgical text
I am a graduating senior medical student, and I happened to come upon this text quite by accident. Intending only to browse it for the moment, I found the text to be captivating. The author gives a clear and concise overview of every major surgical topic in a way that is approachable and easily understandible. The tables and figures nicely complement the "high yield" text. I only wish I had this text when I did my surgical clerkship.

Design Editor for V15: Great Series of books
DISCIPLINE is Volume 14 in the DIMENSIONS series. The DIMENSIONS Series of journals is an excellent find. It contains theoretical projects and articles, student and professional work and interviews from star architects as well as up-and-coming designers. The series is edited very nicely with a very clean graphical quality. As one of the designers for Volume 15, I must say that this issue is an excellent find. Contact the school for more copies of past journals as well as the newly published Volume 15 entitled: LIMITS.

The Films of Alfred Hitchcock
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (1993)
Author: David Sterritt
Amazon base price: $54.95
Used price: $47.40
Average review score:

a MUST for Hitchcock fans
Sterritt's book is somewhat modest compared to the many other tomes on cinema's Grand Wizard; he tackles only a dozen or so of the films in a few unassuming essays -- but he does a brilliant job, adding to the wealth of insights on such classics as "Shadow of a Doubt." His piece on "Psycho" is outrageous, claiming that it's actually a film about MONEY, and that money is equated with human excrement -- and he proves his case! (Marion flushes her calculations down the toilet; Cassidy says, "She sat there while I dumped it out"!) The introductory essay is also very insightful, esp. about Hitch's oversight of his own films. (Sterritt claims that H's cameos are signs that he is ever-present and always monitoring his creation.) I love Hitch, I have practically every book written about him and his work, and I can recommend this book unreservedly.

catharsis for afrikaners
This book struck me, as an Afrikaner, as a catharsis in itself. It enacts what it describes. It is its own peculiar truth commission for each reader. Foreign readers will not share this special experience, but will be absolutely enthralled by the poetic rendition of what appears to be a struggle to get to grips, in literary terms, with an immense personal experience. There are some very disturbing parts. My criticism is that the self-conscious literary symbolism at times appears to be strained, and to be at odds with the dialogue, or with the dramatic moment. What is essentially brooding cogitation is often presented rather implausibly as natural dialogue. It should be remembered that Krog is a poet. One should read the book as one would a dramatic monologue displaying someone trying to cope with a confused flood of guilt, elation, sadness and hope. And racial shame. The book represents an experience well worth the inevitable depression that will accompany its reading. It is also an extremely successful presentation, in digestible and dramatic format, of a phenomenon that remains crucial to the post-apartheid South African reality. It is, in other words, good history and good journalism as well as good poetry.

Unsettling stories from the apartheid amnesty hearings.
I bought my copy of "The Country of My Skull" while on a trip to South AFrica in August, 1998. This is the first-hand observers view of the South African apartheid amnesty hearing in front of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (chaired by Archbishop Desmond Tutu).

This is a gripping and unsettling book. Hard to read because of the intensity of the tales that are retold by the author. But this is an important book because we learn again the extent of man's inhumanity to man.

If you are interested in South Africa, politics, racial relationships, or human struggle against injustice, this is a "must read" book. Nothing like it has ever been published.

A powerful account of the TRC by an Afrikaner poet/writer.
I purchased this book in South Africa in March, 1998. I lived in Cape Town in 1984 and 1985 and was surrounded by the emerging events that ultimately led to the demise of Apartheid. This book is powerful since it is written by an Afrikaner author who not only relates the horrors presented before the Truth & Reconciliation Commission but also shares her own struggle to reconcile herself with the legacy of her country. This will be a challenge for the reader without first hand knowledge of Aparthied South Africa. Anyone who wants to struggle to understand such a place must read this book.
