An indispensable Tool.
I can't praise enough this book. The First section explain the Basic about Storytelling, the Second section expose The Screenwriting Tools, the Third Section from the page 100 to the end provide an Analyses of 16 Films using the following tools/elements:

Protagonist and Objective, Conflict, Obstacles, Premise and Opening, Main tension, Culmination and Resolution, Theme, Unity, Exposition, Characterization, Development of the History, Dramatic Irony, Preparation and Aftermath, Planting and Payoff, Plausibility, Action and Activity, Dialogue, Visuals, Dramatic Scenes.

My conclusions:
1) The information is clear and concise explaining the essential elements of a script
2) The Analyses Section provides examples in depth
3) The book is cheap

Is a favorite between my 12 books about Writing, you can't go wrong with this bok even if you are a Pro because the analyses of the films provide you a comparative of the central principles of a good movie.

Masterful! Brilliant! Amazing!
Forget all of the other books out there...or, buy the other books, but make this one first on your list. Howard and Mabley are both accomplished professional writers and they know their tools of the craft, which they now share with you. This book succeeds immensely simply because it lists the elements of a screenplay and tells how each is best used and why. It has all of the basic elements: Dialogue, Dramatic Irony, etc. But ever heard of "Preparation and Aftermath", "Future and Advertising", "Planting and Payoff", or "Plausibility"? If not, then learn how to include them in YOUR screenplay to make it better, more exciting, and more fulfilling in a dramatic and universal way. Absolutely the best book on screenwriting. Period. Buy it now. I have read it a countless number of times and each time I learn something new or it spurs my imagination to create something new in the world of my screenplay. Please do yourself a favor and get a hold of this book. A masterpiece of screenplay instruction.

A Book to Read
"Tools" is written by an intellectual with many years under his belt. He starts from the bottom up, and teaches you writing from the most basic levels to the most complex of ideas. This book not only improves your screenwriting skills by leaps and bounds, but enriches your movie-going experience.

this is just to ask you a question about a review I wrote!
Hi

I wrote a review a while back.

Recently one of guys who wrote a chapter in the book emailed me that made a mistake in who I attributed which chapters to.

If I send you a corrected review, will you replace the old one? I think tht would be easier than trying to reword the old one.

Thanks

A well-presented collection of valuable research.
Emotional intelligence has become an interesting area of research in the fields of psychology and education. Salovey and Sluyter enlighten readers by providing an understanding of emotional intelligence and how this construct is vital to successful human adaptation.

The editors include works by several prominent researchers that offer varying perspectives on the development of human emotions, and many educational implications. A particularly refreshing component of this book is the inclusion of a K-12 educator's commentary at the end of each chapter.

Salovey and Sluyter provide a well-presented collection of valuable research on the popular topic of emotional intelligence. This book is recommended for everyone that is interested in the recent research on emotional intelligence and emotional development. However, Emotional Development and Emotional Intelligence is essential for researchers, teachers, and other professionals in the fields of education and psychology.

It provides an important link between empirical research and practical applications of emotional intelligence. Although research on emotional intelligence continues, this book is the first step towards founding a knowledge base on this important construct.

Great summary of EI research for educators, bit hard to read
Peter Salovey and his colleague, John Mayer, were apparently the first to use the term "emotional intelligence" in their academic research. Of special interest is Salovey's new definition of the term which he offers in this book (in the first article.)

The book is a collection of academic articles which each offer lots of research journal citations. This makes it easy for someone to do further research. (Very handy for college students writing papers!)

Salovey only wrote two articles for the book. I would prefer to have seen more of his writing. It seems to be a bit more concise. Some of the contributors get very wordy and overly academic when they could say things much more simply.

Each article is followed by a short commentary by an K-12 educator. I found these commentaries are only somewhat helpful. Even they were pretty academic. I would prefer more practical suggestions, such as those on my site (see below)

If you have a masters or Ph.D. you won't have too much trouble with the book. But it is not written for the average second grade teacher.

Still, it is worth the time it takes to read it, and I would agree that it is an "authoritative" book. Peter Salovey by the way, seems to be more concerned with making a positive difference in the world, while Daniel Goleman seems to be more concerned with making a fortune and a name for himself. Salovey is, for example, is working with educators while Goleman is pandering to the corporations with his new book on EQ for business.

And I personally agree with most of Salovey's approach to EI in education. For example, he says teach EI lessons as the opportunity arises throughout the day. He understates the importance of the teacher's emotions and his/her own level of EI, however. Teachers have a lot of work to do on their own emotional management before they will be good instructors and, more importantly, models, of EI.

Article 4 by Greenberg and Snell is the best single article I have seen on the child's brain and the importance of healthy emotional nurturing in the first few years.

Other especially informative articles were 5 and 6 on regulation of emotions.

Article 9 is interesting in how it suggests we apply academic research to practical educational settings.

Summary

A bit pricey, but full of research data and references as well as very interesting information on the brain and the child's emotional development. And as the title suggests, it does address educational implications, albeit in a somewhat theoretical manner. Overall, I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in either EI or education.

Find the Answer to the Cosmic Question!
And the question is:
"Why should you never play chess with a dragon?"

In the distant future, man isn't a whole lot smarter than he is today. We join the great horde in the galaxy thinking that everything is for free. When the bill comes due, it's a shocker.

But we find out quickly through our cast that the whole things a rigged game being played with loaded dice; con artists abound; and talk is definitely not cheap.

This book is a fast but delightful read. The alien cultures are neatly delivered with insight into their way of doing things. And philanthopists they're not.

I strongly recommend "Chess With a Dragon" especially if you have a sense of humor.

Short summary: Can mankind repay an information debt?
Chess with a dragon is one of the faster reading books I have seen. Although it may look like 150 or so pages, the large number of chapters, and layout at the chapters makes the actual length more like 100 pages.

Short is not bad. This is a really enjoyable, very good book.

The title "Chess with a Dragon" does not refer to an actual game; rather, at the point where the good guys are in the worst possible shape, one of them has to, hrmm, "negotiate", with an alien creature from a race called the Dragons.

Without spoiling the book: The story takes place in the far future. Man has found the stars, or been found by them; man has been introduced into the galactic society, that revolves around the galactic library, an information storehouse that races can "borrow" information from (running up an information debt), or repay by adding new information to.

As the story opens, mankind is informed that the credit limit has been reached, and it is time to make payment plans. Of course, the race that has purchased the information debt wants one type of collection plan, that isn't necessarily favorable to mankind's future existance.

I LikeThis Book!
I liked this book because the drawings look like how I draw. I also like this book because his house sounds like my house. I like how he cleaned up his room by using his imagination. Diggy Dan has a neat way of talking. I think lots of boys my age(I am 8) would like this book. I wish that they would make more books like this.

Diggy Dan review
I have read this book to my kids and I must say the artwork REALLY jumps off the page. The colors are great and the story is one I can really identify with, with my kids. I hope to see more Kamish books out there, I'm so tired of the sam old "Cat in the Hat" books, this is finally a childrens book I enjoy reading as much as my kids.

Fruit of the Spirit: A Children's Bible Study of Galatians
David Walters has produced an excellent work of ministry in Fruit of the Spirit. Walters presents one of the New Testament's most referred to scripture in a most appealing format for children. As a parent, I was impressed with the simple Bible instruction and numerous cartoons. As a Sunday school teacher, I can report that my students were enthralled by the ease of language and enjoyed the discussions that followed the readings. In addition, the children found the chapter quizzes most helpful in remembering each gift and reinforcing the lesson. Finally, as a youth minister, I highly urge pastors and teachers to consider Walter's books in lieu of the children's studies that are normally selected for group study. When the Gospel is taught simply, children simply teach others.

Great teaching tool for children
This bible study is a wonderful tool for helping children to understand the Biblical cncepts of the Fruit of the Holy Spirit in their lives
