Boring... and thin....
Jacket Blurb: "A PERFECT MUDDLE-- If all was fair in love and war, Artemesia Bigelow couldn't fault her father's abject disapproval of the man she loved. Lord Alex Merwin's politics were quite the opposite of her strong-minded papa's, after all, and Artemisia could not disobey her father- at least, not outright. But when her father's life is in danger and Alex is the only one who can save him, perhaps Artemisia can dream of a wedding at last..." "AN INGENIOUS SOLUTION-- Never mind that lovely Artemisia was his heart's true love- Alex Merwin was a gentleman, and without Sir Vincent Bigelow's permission, he had no right to court her. Yet with the ton in Paris after so many years away, and Napoleon approaching the south of France, chaos was certain. Alex would do whatever it took to protect Artemisia...and convince her father that he was the only man for his daughter."

I was really disappointed in this book. Savery's usual level is pretty decent. This book had Merwin, one of the famous group of friends she often writes about, and Merwin always seemed an interesting character in Savery's other books. Ergo, I looked forward to her finally doing his story. But I began to read and then wonder if this was the same Merwin or another chap altogether. He seemed boring and wishy-washy to me. Artemisia lacked depth and her father was just an irritating fool without the humor Austen was always able to wring from her fools. Nice try but not a success to any degree. There is also a very shallow, idiotic woman who plays a secondary character with absolutely nothing to contribute to the storyline.

In conclusion, the story bored me; it was thin. To top it all off, the characters also had nothing endearing or of real interest to contribute. In respect to her prior books, I am sorry to have to give this one such a negative review but there it is.
