For Any Girl with a Scope of Imagination~
I have wanted to read Anne of Green Gables for so long and finally did. Why did I wait?? I wish I would have read this book years ago. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Whether you are a child or adult you won't be able to help falling in love with Anne of Green Gables. This young Orphan is mistakenly sent to the home of brother and sister Matthew and Marilla. What they wanted was a boy to help around the house as they were getting older. What they got was a delightful little girl who warmed their hearts and touched their souls. Anne gets into all kinds of hijinks throughout the novel that will make you laugh with her and cry with her. Her imagination is unmatched. She is so insightful that you will find it impossible not to relate to her. Follow Anne through her escapades of learning what it is like to be wanted and loved by parents, finding her place in a strange school, and finally getting to have a bosom buddy..someone she can truly call a friend and share life's ups and downs with. As Anne sets one ambition after another for herself, you'll be cheering for her success. This would be a great book to read on your own or along with a child. When you're finished, Anne will feel like your own personal bosum buddy. This book is one you'll adore long after it's over.

Children's Literature at it's height
A few weeks ago, I got really sick of today's children's literature. I had read enough mysteries and trashy books about romance to last me a lifetime. So I wanted something else to read, something well-written with a good plot and lifelike characters. I had to look no further than the first book I picked up- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

Anne of Green Gables is the first book in the Anne of Green Gables series. It takes place, as most of L. M. Montgomery's books do, on Prince Edward Island in Canada. This particular story takes place in the town of Avonlea. It follows young Anne Shirley, an orphan brought to Green Gables to help Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on their farm. Much to Anne's dismay, Marilla tells her that they wanted a boy to help around the farm, not a girl. However, Marilla changes her mind and decides to keep the dynamic young girl who would become Anne of Green Gables.

This novel is incredibly written, with well-developed characters and an intricate plot. I absolutely loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great example of children's literature at its height.

So wonderful it brought tears to my eyes
I have read many books in my lifetime, and I must say, without a doubt, this is my favorite. When Mathew Cuthbert goes to pick up his and his sister's, Marilla Cuthbert, adopted child, he finds out she is a girl. They consider not keeping her, but soon they decide that she can stay a Green Gables. Marilla slowly loves the imaginitive high spirited girl more and more each day. Anne encounters many adventures from the age of 11 to 16. This book was so good, I found my heart bursting with joy. I would reccomend this to any girls and women. I loved it!

Shrill, Vindictive Propaganda
In the Presbyterian Church, the Left wing of that denomination is constantly lecturing conservatives on proper behavior; we are told we must be "civil" and not "scapegoat" people. But this nasty little book is not civil, and it certainly scapegoats people, drawing tortured connections between unrelated people and entities that would have made Joe McCarthy blush. Further, the dark mutterings about how a small, wealthy minority is using deception to threaten our national way of life reminds me of the tactics used by Nazi propagandists against the German Jews. It is very revealing that the "civility police" of our church is simultaneously plugging this book. The hysterical, vindictive *positive* reviews given this book (which really says something ... it is unusual that positive reviews are so mean-spirited, but there you go ... birds of a feather flock together.) indicate that the hard left of the PCUSA is on a search and destroy mission against anyone who disagrees with them, for any reason. Animus and hatred motivate this book and the hard Left movement behind it. Any relationship between "A Moment to Decide" and the love of Christ is purely coincidental and surely unintentional.

Excellent information
Thanks for writing such an informative book. I understand the power stuggles in the PCUSA much better than before.

A Wake Up Call
A Moment to Decide is a status report to the Presbyterian church. It's main point is that there are factions within the mainline churches that are well organized and have a decidedly political agenda. These factions are funded by powerful men (primarily) in industry and commerce who will stop at nothing in order to ensure that their fundamentalist views prevail. They hold that the Bible is inerrant and infallible. Anyone who doesn't agree with them they demonize. The threat, according to author Lewis C. Daly, is that the factions who are using the mainline churches to set the political agenda in America undermine the liberal democratic institutions in which we have our freedoms. They first must undermine the separtation clause in the Constitution then they will be free to set up their religious agenda.

The religious program that the conservative right wants to set up is anti-gay, anti-choice and, ultimately, anti-woman's suffrage. Lewis writes concerning Dr. Harold Brown a former professor at Reformed Theological Seminary in Charlotte, NC, "Dr. Brown is on the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, an organization the espouses 'male headship' in family life and the church, asserting in its mission statement that 'wives should forsake resistance to their husbands' authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands's leadership.'" (p.44)

This book is a wake up call. The conservative right is telling us ahead of time that they would set up a relegious theocracy in this country. This theocracy is out to undermine the liberal democratic mainline churches. The dissatisfaction and the discord that the conservative right propagates is the primary reason our churches are failing. It is time to respond.

Those who promote that the Bible is inerrant and infallible such as the Promise Keepers' movement undermine both the real authority of the Bible and our very freedoms. The Bible never makes the claim for itself that it is inerrant or infallible. The Bible was written by fallible and errant people. So to claim that it has no errors, historically or scientifically is demonstrably not true, and if not true those who make the claim that it is are not of God.

Wake up America! Wake up women of America! That is the message. I know so many women who continue to go to churches just because that is where they grew up even though that church teaches against them. If you currently support a church that propagates that women should be subserviant to men, that women should not have a choice about their own health, that gays and lesbians are evil then you are also promoting that view. According to the author we have a choice now. We may not have a choice in the future.

I had heard that someone said that A Moment to Decide was not very well researched. That obviously was put out by those who disagree with its findings. For the 107 pages of information there are 33 pages of documentation. It's not an easy book to read because it has so much information. But it is an important book for all concerned Christians to read.

Gives a few great places a bit of a rough treatment
This is another guide written in the same sort of format as Lets Go and Lonely Planet. It is a lot thicker than the Lets Go version and believe me, weight and space are important when lugging the thing around a whole continent. Let's Go also has a fair bit more information than Rough Guide in fewer pages. I also don't like the paper the pages are made of in this book as it's not a nice texture, is very thin and the pages stick together when the book's been inside a hot backpack and just don't feel nice turning the pages when it's a bit humid. Rough Guide is also rather opinionated on everything from each hostel to local information booth staff friendliness. I must say I do agree with some comments but a lot I never had the same experiences. That's the thing about travelling one person can have a great experience with a tourism operator and the next not so good. It depends who else is on the tour, in the room, which staff member you get and so on. If this was a constantly updated website that encourages feedback and changed the information regularly than I would see a place for it but not in a guide book. If you follow the author's opinion you'll miss out on some great experiences and even the places he recommends you may still have a bad time at. That's just the way tourism is. I'd recommend Lets Go over this for backpacking around Australia.

Do not travel to Australia without this book
This book was a lifesaver for us on our three week vacation to Australia. The maps within it were fantastic especially on our four day drive up the coast. It was very helpful with regard to accommodation, and finding tourist information offices. We didn't leave our room without it on any day of our trip.

Bass-ackward approach to learning
This book tries to be an all in one. It seems the author wrote a nice little program (called Mirus), and decided to write how he wrote this program, instead of teaching how to write a game.

First off, half the book is wasted on learning C++. Now, it's a great for anyone to learn C++. It's not great if the first time you learn C++, when you're in a Microsoft environment, trying to create something complex like a game. In fact, that's just plain ....

So, since I already know C++, I skipped half the book and got to the introduction to Windows programming. This chapter provided a little hope. He had a very good writing style, his explanations were clear, and I learned something.

Then I went to the meat of the book. One chapter basically explains how to do graphics and rendering and so forth. This is the heart of any game book, and he failed miserably. Instead of giving a top down approach, with small simple example of every aspect of rending and animation, he decides to give you his own program in all its glory. Detail after gory detail. After about 100 pages or pure code, I still could get a rectangle to appear on the screen. It's basically a design document disguised as a learning tool. To add insult to injury, he ends the chapter with a summary that pretty much says, "long chapter, huh?", and that's basically it.

The equivalent would be to teach someone new to computer how to use a computer by giving him or her the source code for an operating system.

It's apparent that the author has not taught a class or written other books before.

About 80 percent of the book is worthless fluff even if everything was explained correctly. It's a shame. It's a huge book (I think 1000 pages or something), and it doesn't even go into 3D programming. About 6 out of the 20 odd chapters contain useful information.

Just avoid this book, please.

Overall a good book with some mistakes
This book will be a good introduction for anyone who is interested in programming computer games and knows very basic C++. It does give you a tutorial on C++, but there are a fair amount of errors that would bewilder a complete newbie. One of the things I noticed right away was that many of the screenshots are in the wrong spots, and many times in different sections! This would definetely have confused me had I not had basic skills in C++.

I also thought that it was strange that the author teaches about Direct3D BEFORE he teaches about DirectX. Another issue is that some of the programs on the CD from later chapters will not run, but rather will give you a run-time error. A few programs have syntax issues as well.

The content of the book and the teaching style makes up for these errors however. The author writes with a style that explains the details, not giving you the "You don't need to know how it works, just that it does" line LaMothe is famous for. I found the "pointers" section to be very well-explained and it gave examples of situations where they would be useful, which is something I have not seen in other C++ books. The book also gives you complete game examples throughout the book, utilizing many of the covered topics, which I found to be a plus compared to other books which teach you the techniques, but leave you clueless as how to use them. The author also lists his e-mail address and invites you to contact him with any questions you may have, which I thought was a nice gesture.

Overall, I would recommend that you get this book if you have competent enough computer skills to overlook these basic problems. I would also recommend that you have BASIC C++ skills, or that you at least be able to recognize where there is a mistake and be able to work through it.

Good book for game programming beginners...
Being a VB programmer myself, with very little exposure to C++, I found this book to be a wonderful read and a great help in getting me started on the road to programming my own games (which, by the way, is the reason I became a programmer to begin with).

Sousa offers great lessons on C++, which any newbie can clearly understand, with excellent examples and a marvelous teaching style. There are, however, some problems with the book (hence the 4 star rating). Most of the screen shots aren't anywhere near the code they are supposed to support, and a lot of the notes and side tips don't seem to belong to the text they are paraphrasing/helping.

Also, in some code examples he tends to go about things the round-about way, instead of attacking the problem directly.

All in all, I can look past the problems this book has and say that if you want to be a game programmer, buy and read this book before you get anything else. This book will definitely get you on your way!
