The exotic and the erotic.
Why do people travel? For Ian Littlewood, 'the sexual element is vital to tourism' (p.5).

His book is mostly based on the diaries of writers and artists like Boswell, Wilde, Gide, Loti, Forster, Byron, Isherwood, Waugh, Gauguin, with at the end a comment on the Club Med.
It constitutes a keen look at (sex) tourism through the ages.

Since travel began (the British coming over to the continent), the sexual component was an implicit part of the story. The official reason was culture (opening of the mind), but the unofficial one was sexual 'education'. The home comers couldn't disguise it, for they were infected by VD's.

Travel reflected and still reflects economic power and 'colonialist' superiority.
For the affluent who could afford it, Italy (and also Africa) was the main pleasure ground for women travellers; Paris and the Mediterranean countries (Algeria) for men. Their main goal was 'sex with the young', also the very young (paedophilia).

Travel was and is an escape. Now, an escape out of stress. In the former centuries an escape out of the home situation: for women, the subordination; for men, lack of sexual liberty and condemnation of homosexuality.

I recommend this book because it treats a modern subject without dodging an often disguised but essential part of it.

Where is the Revised Edition?
While this book is very well written, provides answers to many important questions, and the real life stories of women are particularly insightful, I am disappointed that I did not receive the "Revised Edition". I was specifically looking for the most up-to-date book available regarding gynecologic problems and placed an order for this book after reading excerpts from Dr. William Parker's web page "A Gynecologist's Second Opinion Online". I had read most of the book before reaching the question "If you need a hysterectomy, should you also have your ovaries removed?" Knowing that Dr. Parker had changed his opinion on that topic, it became apparent that I did not have the revised edition. As much as I enjoyed the book's format, I feel as though I was duped into buying an older book (the 1996 edition as opposed to the 2003 edition) that I would not have purchased otherwise. That said, I'll probably still shell out the extra bucks for the Revised Edition -- if I can find it soon!

Well-written, compassionate, easily understandable
While researching information on a personal health crisis I was facing, I happened to find Dr. William Parker's website, and ordered a copy of "A Gynecologist's Second Opinion". What a gift to the world of women's health! The book covers most reproductive health issues, such as fibroids, cysts, pap smears, cancer, surgical and non-surgical options. It is written in a question and answer format, so it was easy to find the information I needed. The information is clearly written and easy to understand, and contains numerous pen-and-ink drawings to further clarify the explanations. There is a sense of compassion toward woman's health that I hadn't found in many other books. I recommend this book to anyone who is confused about information they receive from their health care provider, to ob/gyns as a reference for their patients, and to any woman interested in her reproductive health.

A MUST READ Book
A week ago I had a hysterectomy, with removal of the ovaries and "plumbing" repairs, all related to pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence. I had ordered this book months ago, in preparation for the planned surgery. So, now that I have planned for and actually had the surgery, I am in a position to give an opinion on this book. YOU MUST READ IT! It is full of all of the questions, and more, that you would want to ask, and it is written in a very understandable way. Now that I have actually experienced the surgery, I have gone back to read the sections specifically on surgery and my problems, and the book is right on target! Everything from the description of what it is like to go into the operating room, to anesthesia, nursing care, etc., is clearly and directly stated right here for you. The book has additional chapters on other topics which weren't relevant to my current medical situation, but you can bet your bottom dollar that I am holding on to this book for future use, as it is so comprehensive. I would unconditionally recommend it!

Massive but messy
I ordered this book because it looked encyclopedic and I hoped I could get by with a single reference work on Illustrator. While this book has a lot of information and is useful, I wouldn't recommend it if it's the only or the first book you're going to get. This volume is rather thin in terms of useful graphics and illustrations, ironically for a book on how to use a program called "Illustrator." It is not tightly edited. In using it I have encountered numerous glitches: instances where the software doesn't look or behave quite as described, concepts and terms are used that have not been previously defined or explained, figures are mis-identified in the text, tools and techniques are recommended without a clear explanation of how to find them in the menus, etc etc.

Filled with information
I have only read about half of this book, but my productivity has soared as a result. The authors really know their stuff.Very easy to follow and full of great examples.

Fantastic All in on reference!!!!!!!!
I stumbled on this book a few months ago and it has opened up the world of Illustrator to me like nothing else has been able to. It is like the book was written with me in mind. I passed it on to my friend, and she found it to be just as helpful.

A great book.

The Innocents Within
I was not prepared for the shock that I was going to receive when I started reading Robert Daly's book the Innocents Within. It was terrible. Actually, it was an abomination. The book should be banned. Even though I read only half of it, that was all I could take. What so bothered me about this book was the fact that Mr. Daly took a little bit of the truth and mixed in a lot of lies and confusion. This is dangerous. He did not represent the people or the events that took place in Le Chambon in a truthful or accurate manner. Even though he does state at the end of his book that it was a work of fiction, he could have written something better. Instead, he wrote a pornographic piece of trash. I cannot and would not recommend this book to anyone.

A Troubling Novel
"The Innocents Within" exploits a true story of idealistic pacifism that took place in central France during the Nazi occupation. The true story is one of dedication and heroism on the part of the Protestant pastors and their congregations in rescuing thousands of refugees. The author describes the book as a novel, but then in the Author's Note at the conclusion of the book he states that the novel is based on historical fact and he names Andre Trocme and his wife Magda as the models for the characters he calls Andre Favert and his wife Norma. He also cites the name of the village: Le Chambon sur Lignon. I knew the Trocmes and some of the individuals described who while not named can nonetheless be easily identified. The portrayal of the assistant pastor as a mere follower of the pastor is an example. The assistant pastor in reality was a man of profound religious and social conviction as well as a gifted educator. In my view, the most troubling aspect of the novel is the portrayal of the pastor as a man who lost his faith due to the Nazi terror and was never able wholly to believe in anything again.(p. 339 &352) In fact, Andre Trocme spent his life working for pacifism. In the post war period, he served as the head of the European section of the Fellowship of Reconciliation, a pacifist organization. Both he and the congregation he served in Le Chambon had an abiding belief in their obligation to try to do good in this world and in the midst of terrible evil they held goodness aloft like a torch which remains a beacon to this day. That is the fundamental reason to preserve the story as it happened and not as a flawed fiction. Daley asserts in the Author's Note that "there may be more truth in it [his novel] than in the nonfiction accounts so far written" The mixture of stock fictionalized characters such as the downed American pilot and the ensuing romance with a beautiful Jewish refugee with the real people and events is a hazardous business indeed.

A Story Of Those-Behind-The-Lines In France WW2.
A fascinating story of people trapped in Nazi occupied France in World War II. The author knows his subject, the terrain, the characters, and all the small details of the time and the situations described. The sole defect of this book is that the author tells his tale so straight and somehow at-a-distance that the author does not seem to care who wins or loses and thus, neither does the reader. The author also does unnecessay embellishment; for instance we read pages of background on a priest - a minor character who appears briefly - for no apparent reason. Robert Daley is a craftsman who does a good job of writing - but he neither varnishes nor polishes his work. Good while you read it, but soon forgotten when you put it down.

Sour grapes anyone?
This book is an excellent study in the internal politics of a major police department. One can easily believe that this stuff realy goes on in the real NYPD. Eisheid would make a particularly good shady politician in civilian life. Unfortunately, he practices being a politician in one of those organizations where it doesn't really belong. Eisheid is really good at what he does, he simply isn't a good cop in the process. The only things he realy cares about is saving face and saving his position at work. Public beware.

To kill a cop a non stop action book
This book was a very entertaining book. I didn't want to put it down. It was full of suspense action and everything else you would expect of a cop book. I had to read this book to meet a requirement, I wasn't sure how it would turn out but it was a very good. "To kill a cop" was a non stop action book. I want to read Robert Daley's other books as soon as I can find some. I would suggest this book to anyone. Just like any other book it had it's slow moments. The book also seemed to switch peoples strories without you even knowing. This book is a must for anyone interested in cop books or movies.

20 Years In Waiting
For 20 years I have regretted not purchasing this book. I first saw it in a book store while in college, and ever since the subject intrigued me.

The Pan Am story is truly an American Saga. Robert Daley takes an "Detective Friday" approach in only reporting the facts. Nevertheless, the tale is worth reading. Prior to Juan Trippe's Pan Am, the only way to get from one continent to another was via steamer. Trippe, Lindbergh and the orignal Pan Am employees established commerical aviation as we know it today. Daley, as dry as he can be, does a thorough job of factually describing the infancy of commercial air travel.

If you can get your hands on a copy of this book, do it. It is a far better way to spend your time than on some of a mindless pap currently available.
