Vivid account of life in Naples
Based on texts from the period (many letters), the book is a chronicle of life at the court of Naples between 1730 and 1820, including artistic life, archeological discoveries, war with the French, Austrian occupation...Very entertaining and well written.

excellent guide to sharpening
Payson's book is an excellent guide to sharpening all types of saws, from hand to table saw blades. Also covered are old fashioned saws for cutting down trees and bucking them. Japanese and carbide tipped blades are about the only types not covered, but that does not detract from the books utility. Clearly written and illustrated, highly recommended.

Good Guideline
One can never deny that Yonggi Cho has made the platform to Cell-Church base. Needless to say the rate of growth in his church has back in 1964 has outgrown his one man leadership. To consider starting a cell group in your church. We need to consider this. Korea is different from your country (if you are not from Korea). People there are close knitted and community based. Therefore to start something in homes is widely acceptable to their culture. Koreans are very accommodative to starngers and they welcome almost anyone even is they don't call first for a visit. Westerners are different. They need to make appointments and they have the right to deny your request for a visit. Nevertheless a good book to keep us afresh of what God is doing in Korea and other parts of the world.

He speaks our Language!
Dr Cho speaks as a lay person even though he is the pastor of the worlds largest church. I had my reservations about reading the book for fear that the content may be too detailed or uncomprehesible for a young aspiring cell-group leader, but Cho has written a simple to understand and inspiring guide to building, or transitioning to, a cell-based church. This book speaks of the principles of building such a church, which seem to be universal...what does this mean?...you will not be able to use excuses about your culture or your congregation. The priciples and groundwork laid out by Dr. Cho will change your perspective on church growth for ever.

Cho, what a guy!
Home groups are the best! We have them in my 1,200 member church and they have allowed me to unite with the heart of the church and with the people of the church. Home groups are as useful in North America, South America, or Korea. Most of the "mega-churches" of today have them, including Ted Haggard (New Life, CO, 7,000 members), Peter Wagner, and the 90,000+ member churches of Argentina and Africa.

Exhausting!!!
Certainly THE bible in the construction industry. The problem is the depth to which this book delves in discussing rather dry, mundane topics. I guess if someone needs to know just about anything in construction, it's here, but be forewarned that there is an IMMENSE amount of information that must be waded through in order to find a specific piece of information. Often used as a textbook in Constructing 101 since it is so exhaustive in its scope (we spent an entire semester on only 1 chapter!). Also makes good reading for insomniacs.

A must have reference
There are many books that construction professionals should, and will, have. This should be one of them. There are 1135 pages of information packed into this book, with authoritative references, tables, and plain English discriptions of building materials. The book uses the CSI format for chapters. I learned long ago that the price of a book is relative: Yes, $70.00 is a lot when compared to a six pack of beer, but is peanuts when based on information presented. Information is power. This book has plenty of it.

Great book for educational applications!
Good boo

Small Town America Circa 1920s
Here is another demonstration of Harold Bell Wright working his magic on the printed page. In a solidly American tale, he vivifies his characters in palpable surroundings. His narrative makes readers feel as though they are witnesses to the action as it takes place.

Against a backdrop of union politics in a factory town, the book takes a strong swipe at Communism while simultaneously decrying corporate greed. Ironically, this work-published in the 1920s-while strongly opposed to Karl Marx's ruinous philosophy never uses the word, "communism." The repeated references are subtle but unmistakable as when a "foreign" labor-organizing rabble-rouser says that his greatest allegiance is to the "Big Union."

On the other side of the coin, the criticisms of big business are limited to corruption and extreme selfishness. These vices are seen as invidious precisely because they abuse capitalism. The concept of getting rich via hard work is esteemed, as are the virtues of honesty, generosity, and devotion to one's fellow man.

One of the likable characters is murdered near the end of the book which is likely a device to show the horror of communism. In a disquieting move, a plea for the killer's clemency seems divagating at best and certainly unjustified given the story. Despite that flaw, the book is a worthwhile read as much for its linguistic potency as for the emotionally inspiring plot. "Helen of the Old House" is one more example of why the author of "Shepherd of the Hills" became known as the "Storyteller to America."

quality criticism, well selected by Bloom
Perhaps the Seattle teacher should learn what the word "editor" means: Bloom's role in this series is an EDITOR, not a WRITER. What Bloom does in this, and many other series, is sort through chaff to find the wheat of criticism, and presents it to his readers so that they will have a rounder view of the literature at hand. As always, some of this work is above the heads of all but the finest readers, but in Bloom's collection there is very little of the self-serving nonsense that passes for criticism these days. Kudos to Bloom Brontosaurus!

To Heck and Back
Truely a classic. A must read for everyone who can even remotely claim to know literature. Read it--now--you won't regret it.

Best book of the last 1000 years!
It is very difficult to review so superb a work but i will try:in short there are two basics things in the Divina Commedia that attract the reader:one is a very comprehensive descripition of medieval society, history, religion and science made by a first class scholar like Dante Alighieri, the other is a most penetrating and revealing analysis of the "ethernal" human being with all the good and the bad everyone of us experiences in his daily life.In the Commedia every aspect of life is examined and accounted for.But i think that the real magic of Dante is the almost super-natural ability to express his views in the most exquisitely crafted verses of Italian literature.Try for example to read Dante and Virgilio encounter with Ulysses or with Paolo and Francesca and you will be almost lifted by the author powers of dramatic rendering of life to another plane of existence and knoweldge.I adore Dante and hope everyone loves him too!Best Italian book ever written!
