Native American Tribes, Politics and Economic Development
I found that the resulting studies printed in these pages revealed a great amount of insight about successful Native American economic development and the interplay of culture, tradition, politics and tribal governmental mechanics. The book also reveals that the task of reforming tribal government may be a difficult task to achieve.

I would recommend a brief reading by any individual, company, or agency that maintains or wishes to develop a working relationship with Native American Tribes.

Cornell/Duchamp "Collaboration"
This book is the catalogue for an exhibition on the intersection of the works of Duchamp and Cornell, specifically the "Duchamp Dossier," a peculiar collection of art and trash that Cornell kept on a shelf in his house. Since it was not discovered until after his death, one can only guess whether he considered it an art piece, though he was known for compiling such "explorations," as he called them, throughout his life. The book contains a large number of beautiful color plates of both artists' work, though many of Duchamp's major pieces are not reproduced (the Cornell plates are more comprehensive). The accompanying texts are not dense critiques but, for the most part, anecdotal narratives with the occasional interpretive aside. For such a large book, it was a fast read and very entertaining. The two artists in question are visual poets rather than painters per se, and there are many creative similarities between them despite their wholly different lifestyles and personalities. Worth buying if you are a Duchamp fanatic like myself, especially for the images.

Enthralling.
Duchamp is undeniably intriguing. His art has covered numerous styles, forms, concepts, etc.. His hermetic, curious existence is fascinating as well, and thanks to some of the essays in this wonderful book, new perspective is shown. Joseph Cornell's art never made the same impact as Duchamp, but it really can't be argued that he is extremely talented. It's hard to give a decent review of this. I've found it to be one of the most fascinating books about art ever, which is an incredibly hard task.

Best Compilation Yet
I haven't actually bought this book yet, in hopes of receiving it for Christmas, but I spent an indordinant amount of time looking at it in a bookstore - and even went back to admire it again. I love Joseph Cornell's work, and have perused all available volumes with pictures of his artwork, and this is the most complete and beautiful. His shadow boxes are displayed one per page - page after page, which is such a treat! I'm also a Marcel DuChamp fan and think it's genius to combine their work in one book. The likenesses and juxtapositions are facinating, and make this compilation a must have.

Good basis for productive development
In earlier versions of this work, I found Larry Roof's text and examples to be a very good foundation for VB programmers who are getting into the Windows CE/Pocket PC world. When Microsoft first released Visual Basic for the CE environment, it was a frustrating experience for developers. You were never quite sure which bits of code would work the same and which would not, and the online help and debugging tools were nowhere near the level of "regular" Visual Basic. Well, Microsoft has incrementally improved the product, but a good book on VB for CE is almost essential for any VB programmer who wants to work on the handheld systems. And Larry Roof's book meets that requirement.

I should add that my review is based on material I reviewed prior to the release of this PDF version, but the publisher asked me to review it without providing a copy of the PDF.

Good intro & intermediate information
I agree that 'professional' is a stretch with the title. The material's scope is from beginner to intermediate. Also, because I am working with Windows CE 3 & Visual Tools 3, some of the information is clealy dated (time for the next version of the book). However, as an experienced VB developer, new to the windows CE platform, the book was an excellent first step. There are several books on windows CE, but few devoted to VB & CE. The reason is obvious -- VB tools for Windows CE 3 is very limited, and any serious application development will require C++. I recommend this book for VB developers new to the CE platform. Just don't expect to be able to run all the examples as is.

Visual Basic Windows CE Programming --- another review
I thought the book was very well documented with helpful examples. One of the other reviews was simply put "out of date". Concepts and ideas never go out of date, and this book is the first one with complete examples covering topics which are directed at the type of product it supports. I have not found any other book with the explicit subject matter of VB for CE development as this one. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in getting directly into VB-CE development especially ASP/internet access for data. Cheers....!

Wrongly overlooked for his poetry
Usually read for his one hit novel (Red Badge), Crane produced a score of great stories & a gritty novel about prostitution (Maggie) and some very modern poetry that still reads well today. Put it up against his contemporaries of the 1890's and he sounds remarkably modern. (He even looks modern is some later portraits... I see him hanging out with Brautigan, learning about horses with McGuane, hanging in the streets with...)

Perfectly Concise
Crane does not waste words. Each poem moves quickly to the point, offers you this, and this. In school there may be a couple Crane poems in an english book, but not near enough. From "In a desert" (#3?) to Intrigue, his poems are near perfect and his words still hold strong meaning today, from 80 to over a hundred years after they were written.

Poetry with a timeless vision
Although Stephen Crane has earned his place in the American literary canon largely on the basis of his novel "The Red Badge of Courage" and his psychologically compelling short fiction, he was also a master of the art of poetry. "The Complete Poems" is a superb tribute to that poetic genius. In addition to collecting all 135 of Crane's known surviving poems, editor Joseph Katz has written a substantial introduction which places Crane's poetic achievement in context.

Most of Crane's poems are written in a free verse using simple, yet quietly powerful language. His words are full of irony and paradox; his vision is sometimes sarcastic and often dark, yet frequently surprises with gentleness and compassion. Reading Crane, I get the sense of meeting an ancient sage on a barren, wind-swept plain. His poems often have an oddly scriptural flavor to them; these are verses that invite return and reflection.

Stephen Crane writes, "I have a thousand tongues / And nine and ninety-nine lie." Nonetheless, in "The Complete Poems of Stephen Crane" the attentive reader will discover a reservoir of disturbing truth.

a great book for Cornell fans
With it's tipped in plates and beautiful end papers I think this book is a bibliophile's dream. Being a big fan of Cornell's work I was very impressed and pleased with the overall packaging, which I find to be quite lovely, and the quality of the writing. Finally I was really impressed when I found out that the editor put it all together while he was still in college. I think this is a great book for fans of Joseph Cornell's boxes.

the blackbird whistling
I received this book from an old friend who I hadn't seen in nearly twenty years--she showed up unannounced, spent a few hours sitting in the sun, and then disappeared just as unexpectedly. I still don't know if she meant to leave the book behind, but I've decided that I won't give it up. Cornell's boxes have a strange beauty that seems to attract strange birds--deceptively simple, at first you barely realize how quickly you can slip into these lost, overlooked, forgotten worlds that seem hum along according to an amusingly skewed logic. Many of the stories and poems show writers who've successfully crossed over and have sent back postcards filled with the fresh and unfamiliar voices of travellers far from home.

Inspiring! IÂ'm getting this book for everyone I know!
IÂ'm a huge Joseph Cornell fan, and own every book that has anything to do with him. This is the best! Not only are the images beautiful and plentiful (and many new to me), but the stories and poems are so unbelievably entertaining and different from one another. IÂ've never seen a book quite like this one, and IÂ'm going to give a copy to everyone I know!

I miss the old one
I grew up with the Guinness Book of World Records, and loved it. I'd devour each new edition, from cover to cover. I love facts and inane trivia, and the Guinness Book was made for people like me. The "Guinness World Records"- what these books have become- is not the same book. It is mostly pictures. I give it two stars because some records are still present. But the new format of the book seems to be so filled with pictures that there is no room for many important records, and hence much is missing. Small black and white pictures aren't as pretty, but they allow the reader to find what they are looking for. Now, when I want to find a record, I go back to 1998, as I still have that copy. If I want to see pretty pictures and the occasional updated record, I'll look at these newer editions.

This review refers to the 2001 edition.

Great book for kids and adults alike!
Guinness Book of World Records (Dad gave it to me) was always one of my favorite books to read when I was a kid. It inspired me to become a Guinness Record holder.
Give this book to a kid and you might just start a storm of imagination in the child.

A Great Compelation of World Feats
Guiness has yet again made a great book. In its great monstosity and colorful fotos, the Guiness Book of Records for the year 2001 is a fun and education read. This book is packed with feats mastered from around the globe with records set from anywhere between most days spent in an attic to farthest pull of a train with the use of teeth.

I really enjoyed looking at the broad pictures while reading what was being performed in the fotos. These "athletes" from around the globe deserve a standing ovation for their wonderful talents and their kindness to publish their feats in a world renown book.

The Guiness Book of Records is really for any ages and offers a very convenient category index so you don't have to keep searching to find the record you want to look at.

As I have said, i really enjoyed this book and anyone who buys will feel the same. Happy reading and thanks for looking at my review!

Not 24 hours
I ordered this book in April and it's May now. It says "Available in 24 hours" but Customer Service says it's a Special Order item that ships in "4-6 weeks".

Yet another application of elliptic curves...
The successful proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Andrew Wiles was probably the most widely publicized mathematical result of the 20th century. And once again, among their numerous other applications, elliptic curves are employed in the proof. The book is a compilation of articles written by first-class mathematicians, the reading of which will give one a thorough understanding of the proof, along with an overview of some very interesting topics in number theory and algebraic geometry. The reader who undertakes an understanding of the proof already no doubt has a substantial amount of 'mathematical maturity', and no review, no matter how complete, would influence greatly such a reader. Suffice it to say then that this book is excellent, and even a reader interested solely in elliptic curves and modular forms could benefit greatly from the reading of this book.

Great?!?!
This book might be good if you like number theory. But if you're an analyst who hates number theory or a brick-layer, then this book is probably not meant for you. I hope you found this review helpful. Have a nice day.

Lavishly Illustrated?
I should have known better than to buy a book without actually holding it in my hands and giving it at least a cursory once through. One of the editorial reviews said that it was "lavishly illustrated", and that was good enough for me. There simply is not enough books with illustrations of the works of Joseph Cornell. Hence, I bought it, only to find that there's not a single color plate in the whole book. All the illustrations are B&W. Not only that, but most of the photographs of the works are not particularly well done. I admit, I haven't even looked at the text--so, call me provencial. Art books are about art. Art is colorful. In writing a review of a book, I would be ashamed to call it "lavishly illustrated" when not a single plate is in color. What, then, makes it lavish? You've got me. I'm going to bet that you're going to see a lot of used copies of this book in the near future. Frankly, if you need a fix of Joseph Cornell, buy the Prestel Post Cards of Cornell. You'll save money and actually get some idea of what his creative work was about.
