"Avoid Careless Errors and Grammatical Blunders"
page 26
"There is no excuse for spelling errors in your essay!"

Okay, authors, so please take your own advice - it's "Seuss" not "Suess" (page 19), "Dave Barry" not "Dave Berry" (page 9). These are the authors' mistakes, not from the students' essays. Good ideas - Sloppy editing = Lost credibility.

I WAS ACCEPTED EVERYWHERE I APPLIED!!
This book helped me come up with essays that ultimately led to my acceptance at all 12 schools to which I applied (two of which are IVY league schools and all of which are ranked by US News at within the top 50 Doctoral Universities in the Nation)! I honestly don't think I would have had a chance had it not been for this book!

Quick, Easy Cooking
Life can get hectic, and like most young singles, I rarely find time to cook for myself. When I do try new recipes, I often find them good, but too time-consuming for cooking for one. This cookbook changed my way of thinking. I can cook quick and healthy meals that taste great in less than 40 minutes. Each of Bittman's recipes includes suggestions for saving time, complimentary wines, and side dishes to serve. This makes me seem an excellent hostess when I try his suggestions!

This book changed the way I cook
My usual routine was to open a can of sauce and throw it over spaghetti weeknights, and then make something fantastic (and complicated) on weekends. Not anymore. Although the recipes in this book are delicious, easy and quick, the real value for me was in the technique lessons he sneaks into every recipe (like searing and steaming chicken breasts) and the encouragement to create your own variations of the recipes. I also liked his flavor combinations- he includes some that I've never tried before as well as the classics, but they've all been very tasty.

I can't recommend this book enough. I also liked "The minimalist cooks at home".

The Joy of Cooking
Before I had a baby 19 months ago, I was interested in recipes with maximum ingredients and complicated preparations. There was usually a 50/50 chance that it would taste good enough to cook again. After the baby, I stopped cooking altogether. I have started again with this book. The recipes are uncomplicated, and the results are sublime. I am eternally grateful to Mark Bittman for bringing joy back to my cooking.

A great guide to first-rate meals
Mark Bittman does a wonderful job of bringing interesting ingredients and simple techniques together to make great-tasting dishes in a minimum amount of time. He fosters a spirit of experimentation with his suggestions for quick variations on the recipes. Most importantly, his "minimalist" approach demonstrates the truth about great cooking: the best flavors are in the food; don't muck around much with it and you'll do OK.

Mark's clear writing style makes the recipes easy to understand and his introductions often show the thought process he went through in stripping an idea for a dish down to its minimalist presentation.

I've often pulled this book off the shelf, paged through to find three or four recipes that sound interesting, made a shopping trip and threw together a fantastic meal in an hour or so. With the help of this book and implementing Mark's philosophy in other dishes, I've increased my reputation as a great cook among my friends.

Many have suggested Mark's "How to Cook Everything" book. I found that book too daunting upon first perusal. I don't want to cook "everything." I just want a few dishes that I can turn into consistant favorites. This book was perfect for me and I highly recommend it. Perhaps when I'm looking to expand into some odd dishes, I'll pick up "Everything;" for now this book holds more than enough.

Most Innovative Cookbook I've Ever Found
This cookbook is amazing. The first time I opened it I wanted to try all the recipes immediately. Then I realized how incredibly simple they are. My husband and I cook a nice dinner almost every night and we use this cookbook on a regular basis. This book guides us through the preparation of wonderful dishes with varied ingredients in a minimal amount of time. It is not a cookbook you use for special occasions, although there are several recipes that are appropriate for a dinner party, it is a cookbook you use everyday in this hustle-bustle life that we lead. I highly recommend any one of asian influenced dishes as well as the Honey-Orange Roasted Chicken.

I find the recipes very easy to understand and they are all accompanied by several suggested variations. For example, the Linguine with Spinach recipe is originally italian-like, but if you very two or three of the 5 ingredients it becomes distinctly asian and you can prepare it either way in the amount of time it takes to cook pasta.

My husband and I will never be accused of eating the same thing night after night, we hardly ever have the same dish twice in one month. We have probably 50+ cookbooks in our collection and this is the one we use most often.

Wow! A definite buy.
I am just learning to cook and am already an avid fan of Mark Bittman. His two other books - "How to cook everything" and "Simple to spectacular" are the only books that have a permanent place in our spatially-challenged kitchen (we have about 50 other cookbooks). Now, I have to find room for this book.

I read "the mini" in the NY Times every week and have attempted a few of his recipes, which have always produced fantastic results. The recipes in this book are fast, simple to follow, and require ingredients that are very easy to get. Along with each simple recipe, Bittman also includes a "With Minimal Effort" section that lets you elevate the dish from minimalist to spectacular. The technique and ingredients in this section are just as simple as in the main recipe.

Buy it. You will definitely enjoy it.

Tastes horrible...
I've made five of these recipes exactly as specified and they were all inedible. I'm not wasting any more food on these recipes...

One of my favorites
This cookbook is terrific for anyone who likes good, interesting food but has little time to prepare it. Each meal is fresh and healthy. The range of flavors keeps me coming back to try new recipes on a regular basis. Each one inevitably is a "keeper."

Great for those at a loss with meal planning!
This cookbook is a great resource. Most of the recipes I've tested are very flavorful and simple to prepare. The author seems to be fairly health conscious in the selections she put in this book. I also liked how the entire meal is planned for you and the author gives good tips on how to cut time in the kitchen.

Misleading Title
Not until you open the book to the first chapter do you find out that the marks are limited to the period 1650--1850. No marks after 1850.

worth the price
Although limited in periods covered (stops at 1850), this is a handy, easy to carry reference. Kovel's may be more extensive, but the additional info is often not what you need in the middle of the antique mall checking out a possible purchase. I find I use both, write notes in both, and have many pieces I know are American and I can't find the marks in either. So, what the heck, for ten bucks it's worth having with you BEFORE you buy.

A very useful reference
For the time period covered (1650-1850) this is a very useful, almost exhaustive reference. I turn to it when I need to identify a hallmark, and find the illustrations to be very helpful. I thought it was a good buy.

Chomsky's Universal Grammar: An Introduction

A Transition Help from GB to MP
The Government and Binding Theory (GB), though Chomsky prefers it to be called the Principle and Parameter Theory, is the most popular version of Chomsky's grammar in 1980s'. This book is an easy reading to cover every important part of GB. All significant terms are highlighted in a shaded block, which is very convenient for the reader to check up. In particular, the last chapter of the book provides a brief but clear explanation for the current version of Chomsky's theory, i.e., the Minimalist Program (MP). The chapter is a good help for the reader who want to transit from GB to MP, though he would be quite surprising to see that almost all key concepts in GB, such as D-structure, S-structure, Government, disappear in MP. This is a good introductory book both about the GB and MP framework.

excellent intro to GB for non-linguists
Although I am not a Chomskyan, I personally am fond of this book. It is well-written and lucid, presenting basic Government & Binding theory in terms that are very easy to understand. I doubt a single non-technical introduction to generative grammar of this brevity and clarity has yet been written (far superior to Pinker's hand-waving in _The Language Instinct_), and I recommend it to anyone, non-generative linguist and non-linguist alike, who is interested in current mainstream linguistics in North America.

However, Cook does seem worshipful of Chomsky to a degree that is just short of disturbing; Chomsky is frequently quoted more as authority than for argument, and does indeed appear on almost every page. The overall affect was, for me, disquieting.

It is also, of course, no longer accurate: "Chomsky's" Universal Grammar is now the Minimalist Program, which is handled only by a final, tacked-on chapter. Cook should completely update this book with a third edition that starts with Chomsky's current theory from the beginning.

The Bee Gees: Tales of the Brothers Gibb
Published in Hardcover by Omnibus Press (1900)
Authors: Melinda Bilyeu, Hector Cook, Andrew Mon Hughes, Joseph Brennan, Mark Crohan, and Andrew Hughes
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

Poorly organized book
I read the book carefully and the it's a real shame that the authors did not spend more time on research! Many reviewers complained about lack of information of Bee Gees main asset, their music, I regret to say that it's true. Now, should we wait for a Bee Gees Anthology? Official, Authorized and Informative?

The Bee Gees: success, fall and redemption.
Tales of the Brothers Gibb achieves its purpose, being a great bio-graphy about the life of a family dedicated to music, a journalistic account of their sharp "up and downs" in the public's preferences and final, long-awaited redemption, when a new generation of fans and artists, who never danced their hits on discos, decided that they were a legend.

The book fails to deliver, though, one of the promises made in the first pages, where the authors state that the main focus will be in the musical aspect of their lives. There is not that much discussion about the chords, harmonies, musical significance of their works or a detailed anylisis of the great albums, as it should be. The Bee Gees are, after all, more about music than anything else.

But that shouldn't stop us from enjoying a good biography or even from learning many, many facts about the music, about the way it was made, about the historical context that gave birth to Odessa or Main Course. I can only begin to imagine now what a song like "Really and Sincerely" must mean to Robin. Or Robert Stigwood's insane obsession with the Beatles, which the Brothers Gibb suffered too and still suffer. A very unhealthy obsession that led them to make unforgivable mistakes like their Sgt. Pepper movie and album.

The book is also too "clean" because the Bee Gees always appear like saints, and I somehow suspect they are not. The part dedicated to Australian years is too long and the final stage of their career (1981 and up) is too short, but I enjoyed the book a lot anyway.

And it gives us all a very important lesson: No matter how bad it looks, be always like the Bee Gees and never give up.

This book is huge!
I had already ordered the book when I started reading some of the reviews on here. Some people did not like that the authors wrote about the Bee Gees family or about their younger brother Andy. I tend to disagree with this popular mode of thinking. In order to understand their success and failures, it was their families that were always there for them. The support and love of their families is what molded and shaped them into the successfull and well-rounded individuals they are today. I truly enjoyed getting a glimpse into what life is really like for the Bee Gees.

This book was very well written and researched. In many cases, it will give many views from different parties to a particular story. And if the authors felt that some of the stories were embellished or untrue, they would further research the stories and give their opinions to what really may be the truth.

This book may not give die hard Bee Gees fans any new information but it is a great book for those just discovering their music. It is a very realistic book that not only follows their success but show each Bee Gee as an individual person, not just as a group.
