Mark's clear writing style makes the recipes easy to understand and his introductions often show the thought process he went through in stripping an idea for a dish down to its minimalist presentation.
I've often pulled this book off the shelf, paged through to find three or four recipes that sound interesting, made a shopping trip and threw together a fantastic meal in an hour or so. With the help of this book and implementing Mark's philosophy in other dishes, I've increased my reputation as a great cook among my friends.
Many have suggested Mark's "How to Cook Everything" book. I found that book too daunting upon first perusal. I don't want to cook "everything." I just want a few dishes that I can turn into consistant favorites. This book was perfect for me and I highly recommend it. Perhaps when I'm looking to expand into some odd dishes, I'll pick up "Everything;" for now this book holds more than enough.
I find the recipes very easy to understand and they are all accompanied by several suggested variations. For example, the Linguine with Spinach recipe is originally italian-like, but if you very two or three of the 5 ingredients it becomes distinctly asian and you can prepare it either way in the amount of time it takes to cook pasta.
My husband and I will never be accused of eating the same thing night after night, we hardly ever have the same dish twice in one month. We have probably 50+ cookbooks in our collection and this is the one we use most often.
I read "the mini" in the NY Times every week and have attempted a few of his recipes, which have always produced fantastic results. The recipes in this book are fast, simple to follow, and require ingredients that are very easy to get. Along with each simple recipe, Bittman also includes a "With Minimal Effort" section that lets you elevate the dish from minimalist to spectacular. The technique and ingredients in this section are just as simple as in the main recipe.
Buy it. You will definitely enjoy it.

However, Cook does seem worshipful of Chomsky to a degree that is just short of disturbing; Chomsky is frequently quoted more as authority than for argument, and does indeed appear on almost every page. The overall affect was, for me, disquieting.
It is also, of course, no longer accurate: "Chomsky's" Universal Grammar is now the Minimalist Program, which is handled only by a final, tacked-on chapter. Cook should completely update this book with a third edition that starts with Chomsky's current theory from the beginning.
The book fails to deliver, though, one of the promises made in the first pages, where the authors state that the main focus will be in the musical aspect of their lives. There is not that much discussion about the chords, harmonies, musical significance of their works or a detailed anylisis of the great albums, as it should be. The Bee Gees are, after all, more about music than anything else.
But that shouldn't stop us from enjoying a good biography or even from learning many, many facts about the music, about the way it was made, about the historical context that gave birth to Odessa or Main Course. I can only begin to imagine now what a song like "Really and Sincerely" must mean to Robin. Or Robert Stigwood's insane obsession with the Beatles, which the Brothers Gibb suffered too and still suffer. A very unhealthy obsession that led them to make unforgivable mistakes like their Sgt. Pepper movie and album.
The book is also too "clean" because the Bee Gees always appear like saints, and I somehow suspect they are not. The part dedicated to Australian years is too long and the final stage of their career (1981 and up) is too short, but I enjoyed the book a lot anyway.
And it gives us all a very important lesson: No matter how bad it looks, be always like the Bee Gees and never give up.
This book was very well written and researched. In many cases, it will give many views from different parties to a particular story. And if the authors felt that some of the stories were embellished or untrue, they would further research the stories and give their opinions to what really may be the truth.
This book may not give die hard Bee Gees fans any new information but it is a great book for those just discovering their music. It is a very realistic book that not only follows their success but show each Bee Gee as an individual person, not just as a group.

"There is no excuse for spelling errors in your essay!"
Okay, authors, so please take your own advice - it's "Seuss" not "Suess" (page 19), "Dave Barry" not "Dave Berry" (page 9). These are the authors' mistakes, not from the students' essays. Good ideas - Sloppy editing = Lost credibility.
