Great Reference
I too bought this book for a college lit course, but now that I am a teacher, I find that I use it far more than my Norton's Anthology, or any of my other African-American Anthologies. The historical information is written in factual, plain english, without criticism, liguistical studies or prejudice. I use it in my classroom and my high school students understand, comprehend and enjoy the pieces in this book. I highly recommend this book for anyone!

A comprehensive intro to African American literatures
I bought this book for an African-American literature class in college. I still today pull the book out to read passages. And I refer all my friends to it. It has a great collection of the prominent authors - e.g. Booker T. Washington, Frederick Douglass, Phillis Wheatley, W.E.B. Du Bois, Marcus Garvey, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Gwendolyn Brooks, Ralph Ellison, Martin Luther King Jr., Amiri Baraka, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Ishmael Reed, Toni Cade Bambara, Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, Etheridge Knight......and of course the list goes on and on!

This is a must have book for every American Home!

Tango is more than music and dance.
Until I read "¡Tango!", most of what I knew from tango was what was told by instructors, including Daniel Trenner, Brooke Burdett, half a dozen Argentine nationals, an equal number of Canadians, and a Belgian. It was exciting to get all the information I needed in one place. Tango is more than just music and dance. It is a cultural phenomenon that began in the barrios and bordellos of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, and spread throughout the world. At the base of this cultural phenomenon is the relationship between a man and a woman. Tango is not just an American or South American phenomenon. It has spread throughout the world, and is popular in such diverse countries as Finland and Turkey, as well as those areas where it evolved.

The text of the book is outstanding and well documented. I was pleased with the choice of artwork, old and contemporary photographs, and page layout. It gave me a great understanding of the tango as a cultural phenomenon. There is an excellent bibliography and the text is referenced with footnotes for those who wish to go to some original sources. I am one of those people who are always looking for recommendations for music, and I was pleased to see a two-page listing of tangos, which are available on compact disc. For those who travel, there is a listing of international tango centers. It is an incomplete list, but it would be helpful for those who travel a lot for business or pleasure.

If you like tango, this would be a good book to start your collection. Then you can proceed with "Le Grand Tango: The Life and Music of Astor Piazzola."

A Must for Every "Tango Household"
For a person just discovering the Argentine tango (or who wants to), this is an interesting, beautiful, coffee table book. It's filled with gorgeous illustrations and photographs, as well as poetry, lyrics and fun, historical tidbits about the music & history. It rambles, but that just makes it more fun to open it up and start reading from anywhere. It's been the kind of book that has made even my non-tango friends interested in the dance and cultures behind it.

well written, artfully presented
Originally published in hardback as "Their Finest Hour", now bearing its original UK title. Not a formal history as such, but an effort to convey the flow and feel of the times. R. Collier has written a number of good WWII history books and this too is very well written. P. Kaplan has been the artistic mind behind a series of books of this type and format (see note). The book includes many photographs both from 1940 and as the sites, people and artifacts appeared when the book was first published (1988+/-), Sidebars have bits of poetry, songs, and passages from memoirs. (Note: in the same format are: "One Last Look", Little Friends", "Round the Clock", "Wolfpack", Convoy", "Fighter Pilot", and "Bombers". The first three are also excellent, the middle two very good, the last two fair.)

A vital part of critical theory
The relationship of Frederick Nietzsche's philosophy to Sigmund Freud's psychiatric concepts has long been an object of interest for students and practitioners of psychoanalysis. In Freud And Nietzsche, educator, historian and philosopher Paul-Laurent Assoun methodically reconstructs Freud's encounter with Nietzsche, his personal interpretations and the contribution of Nietzsche's champions. Assoun articulately examines the thematic similarities that appear on the surface to reveal close affinities between the two theorists. The analogies between the theories and writings of these two influential and original thinkers are fascinating, informative, and a vital part of critical theory which continues to be actively discussed in regard to critical theory to this very day. Ably translated into English by Richard L. Collier. Jr., Paul-Laurent Assoun's Freud And Nietzsche is a significant and highly recommended contribution to the study of Freud, Nietzsche, and psychoanalysis.

Best introduction to hieroglyphics available!
This book fills the gaping hole between the large reference grammars such as Gardiner's, the popular introductions that don't really teach any of the language, and the out-of-date material by Budge.

Written at the British Museum, this is a textbook for learning to read hieroglyphs such as you find on the walls of a museum. It is not a complete grammar and won't teach you how to read complex literture, but will give you a complete enough command of the language to read most common material.

The book is well-printed and nicely bound, and is small enough to take to the museum with you! It contains a wealth of material, a glossary, king lists, and information about Egyptian gods.

Many of the exercises are drawings or pictures of wall paintings or carvings, making the book fun to use. Answers to exercises are given at the back.

If you don't know which hieroglyphic book to pick, this is the one!

an excellent book to learn hieroglyphs
This book utilises clear and attractive drawings of actual inscriptions displayed in the British Museum to teach their readers how to read Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. These inscriptions are primarily funerary in origin. The texts covered yield valuable insights into the ordinary and elite lives of the people of Ancient Egypt. What places this book above the others is the many exercises offered to practice and consolidate the learning. Detailed answers are provided at the back of the book, which is up-to-date, easily understandable, and well-written for all to comprehend the grammar structure and the language. It is recommended for beginners who truly enjoy the study of the Ancient Egyptian language and hieroglyphs.

A Fun and Easy Step-By-Step Guide to Teach Yourself!
This book is an easy and fun way of learning to read Egyptian Hieroglyphs. It includes step-by-step lessons and practice exercises for you to do each time you learn something new. You will encounter texts, including ones that have been taken from monuments from the British Museum. Plus Mark Collier and Bill Manley, the authors, are proffesional teachers who have been teaching Ancient Hieroglyph courses since 1992 to several groups and institutions. This book was designed for people who have never had exierence in reading hieroglyphs before or for people who just want to improve or fill in the gaps of previous studying.

Intriguing Novel of Ideas
We can only hope that Powers can one day surpass his wonderfully brilliant Gold Bug variations, but this may be his second best book. The romantic strands and existential depth of this work are more like Gold Bug than that more intellectual, analytic and distanced treatments of Galatea and Gain. There is a real humanity to this book, while the characters struggle with the meaning of life, especially one life, swimming in (or against) the tide of history.

Powers is not for all tastes because he engages one at the level of ideas (as well). But if you like that stuff, I'd first get Gold Bug, but then I'd choose this.

An entertaining, thoughtful, and well-constructed novel.
At the urging of many friends, I finally picked up a novel by Richard Powers; I will never regret the long hours I spent reading and digesting The Prisoner's Dilemma. Although the plot is not as tightly-woven or as compact as I hoped, that is my only real (but minor) complaint about this book. Powers weaves an amazing tale that is both grandiose and haunting. The most skillful aspect of The Prisoner's Dilemna is the way in which Powers accurately represents the relationships between siblings. Having several siblings myself, I appreciate the delicacy with which Powers approaches these characters. Of course, the fact that the novel's plot and theme are virtual mind-trips is also a pleasing touch. This is an entertaining, thought-provoking, emotional, intellectual, and creative piece of fiction. I hope that the rest of his novels are as good or better than this; those I will be happy to give a full five stars!

Individual striving run amok
Taking its title (and part of its story) from the well known group dynamics exercise of the same name, this novel asks us to examine what extreme individualism and self-sufficiency has done to our modern world. It beautifully examines the disintegration of one man as he recognizes the limits of personal initiative and education and the corrosive effect this disintegration has on his family. In a time when our so-called leaders play to our basest and most selfish instincts, this novel asks us to see the real need we have to be able trust each other and work cooperatively for the common good. Powers delivers this message in a fascinating and cleverly written work with complex characters with which we can identify and about whom we care. This is a book well worth reading.
