Captivating stories from a First Amendment warrior.
What is clear from the accounts of Garbus' battles for freedom of speech is that the struggle to be free or to remain free will never end. Garbus also shows how one person (or a few) can make a huge difference in the free society we enjoy today. The book portrays many heros, several scoundrals, and events in the past that all jump off the page in a new light. I've added Martin Garbus to my top-ten list of people I would most like to have dinner with because I'd like to find out much more about his exploits in defending our right to hear and read anything others have to say.
Visions of Social Control

Excellent and Inspiring
Stanley Cohen's Visions of Social Control is a unique book in criminological theory. It looks at imprisonment and its alternatives through a macro-historical perspective, comparing models and approaches all over the map, from Rothman to Foucault and Ignatieff. It's written in a fascinating way, and gives examples and illustrations that are sharp and to the point. Scholars and teachers of criminal justice, and sociology of law, will find the firs chapter - The Master Patterns - and the fifth chapter - The Professionals - expecially useful and interesting.

visions...warns us of the dangers of soft on crime solutions
as we all know, now is the key time in determining the future of our criminal justice policy. any new soft on crime approaches in the juvenile justice system such as legalizing runaways, parent "training" or even something benevolent as expanding gun tracing would definately cause a totalitarian society in the US to result. It would probably take just a few months. Nuclear war would follow immediately, killing all life on the planet
A warning of the future that will be coming
The orwellian future is something that we see it today is something that can be Abated, however the nationalizing of The 17 cities program. A technichal data base which will not only resualt in the totlaitarian state, but the end of all human exisistence through a bloody INdo-Pak Nuclear war. This book was not written by Mary Higgins Clark
I thought I was buying a book written by Mary Higgins Clark. I am one of her biggest fans. The short stories were pointless and poorly written. One story was written by Mary Higgins Clark and even that was pointless. On a scale of 1 to 5, this rates a 0.
well written, but lack suspense
This twelve-story anthology loosely focuses on the title, MURDER IN THE FAMILY. Though the tales are well written, they lack the suspense and cutting edge expected of this famous group of popular authors that contributed to the collection and that of previous short story books produced by the Adams Round Table. For most mystery readers, previous Adams Round Table editions are stronger (see MURDER AMONG FRIENDS, etc.). However, die hard fans of Lawrence Block, Mary Higgins Clark, Stanley Cohen, Dorothy Salisbury Davis, Mickey Friedman, Joyce Harrington, Susan Isaacs, Judith Kelman, Warren Murphy, Justin Scott, Peter Straub, and Whitley Strieber will want to read the tales. Yet even the strongest of loyalists need to keep the expectations a bit lower than usual as the gaggle of writers fall short of what each one usually provides.

New presentations that have not seen print elsewhere
Lawrence Block, et.al.'s Murder In The Family packs in high-profile mystery writers whose new presentations have not seen print elsewhere. Mary Higgins Clark probes a father's motivation for revenge, Susan Isaacs presents a chilling portrait of a family which should not be in business, and Dorothy Davis tells of a letter which transforms lives in this excellent collection.
States of Denial: Knowing About Atrocities and Suffering
Published in Hardcover by Polity Pr (2001)

Incompletely researched accusations of the most serious kind
I wrote a review of what I take as a significant distortion and failing of this book. I note that this review has not been posted on the site. I am wondering why?
I didn't know I knew what I didn't know
This is one of those "it should be required reading" books. Although his emphasis is on the larger mass atrocities and sufferings, Cohen examines denial from the personal to the political, from harmless "I'm not eating as many cookies as I really am," to the most horrendous "It's not torture; it's just heavy pressure" to the apathetic, "Gee, 5000 Ruwandans killed this week; I wonder how the Giants did last night." He concisely reviews the explanations of denial--Freudian, cognitive, etc--and neatly identifies the different types, styles, motives and cultural and personal collusions. Cohen's writing is clean, engaging, to the point, neither tediously over-intellectual nor patronzing, obviously well-researched and professional. He assumes his reader is familiar with basic social and political sciences and history and doesn't belabor points others have made. Most importantly, the book is compassionate, not in a gooey, all-is- forgiven and understood sense, but in its acknowledgement of denial as a universal of human behavior. Cohen handles an uncomfortable subject, not knowing what we know, a behavior of which we are all guilty, in a straight-forward, non-accusatory fashion. One has the sense that Cohen has not only being willing to see what goes on in a way that few have the courage to do, but that he has also refused to see, as we all do, and come to terms with his own denials, that his fastination with denial is not only as an observer but as a participant as well.

No Organization
The book is divided into two very general areas: 1) Study and Training and 2) Research and Creative Activities.
Basically, in order to find a fellowship/grant that you are eligibile for, you need to read through every single entry. VERY BAD.
