No-fail recipes for everday meals
The book teaches you everything you need to know from how to hard-boil an egg to stir frying broccoli. It makes are great gift of any beginning cook.

Recipes include breakfast foods, eggs, breads, soups, sandwiches, salads, main dishes, vegetables, desserts, & appetizers. There is no gourmet fare here, just the delicious uncomplicated meals for everyday people.

Some of my favorite desserts are the apple dumplings & easy lemon chiffon pie. I enjoyed the oven pot-roast, meatballs, chili, & pork chops as well. I know I will never get bored with 8 different potato recipes.

I also loved the one-step lasagna. It's great because you don't have to cook the noodles before baking, making it quick & easy to make. The never-fail cheese soufflé & salmon pate will impress dinner guests without hours of frustration.

The Absolute Beginner's cookbook 2
I have been married for 45 years and consider myself a good cook;I have collected literally hundreds of various cookbooks during this time, and once I discovered this book, I have used recipes from it about 10:1 compared to my other cookbooks. For example, we enjoy Victor's Chicken almost on a weekly basis. We have also sent copies of the book to all of our five children and several nieces; perhaps this explains why it is out of print!

Absolute Beginner's Cookbook
I purchased this handy cookbook for my daughter's 12th birthday. The author has a clever sense of humor and an ability to break cooking vocabulary down into easy to understand words for those previously uninitiated in the kitchen. Now at age 22 and married for a year, my daugther said that she can't find her copy since moving several times and wants another for some of her favorite recipes. The book is not a children's cookbook, but for anyone new at cooking. I'd love to see a repeat printing.

Apalachian writing at its finest!
This book is written so well I have read it many times. It is set in the depression era and brings you to that time with laughter and tears. Billy C. CLark describes small town living along the Big Sandy River which was once the cities life. I think people of all ages would love this heart felt book.

A bad oyster....
I read the book with great anticipation. Bought some oysters as well to go along with the whole experience - some little French ones. Prepared them as Ms Clark suggested. Ate them with a chilled chablis. Half and hour later - sick as dog, sick as dog. Turns out the best way to prepare oysters is not (repeat not) to let them sit on the back porch in the sun all day. Never make a mistake twice and won't eat those Belon oysters again. But the book was quite good

A little cooking, a little history, a little poetry
About 25 years ago I stumbled upon Eleanor Clark's history of the oyster beds in Normandy, or her memoir of living near the oyster beds. It's been a long time, but it was simply the best combination of food writing, history, travel writing and poetry that I ever read (yes, I'm reviewing a book that I read 25 years ago, but it stayed with me). My sister and her family are going to be living in Normandy, so I have to buy it for them, and reread it myself. It's unique; it makes every other book about travel and food and "our life in ...." seem pallid.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition (World History Series)

excellent base line history of Lewis and Clark
This is a good book for students learning about Lewis and Clark, it gives information about some of the lesser known members of the expedition. Good factual research and information. There are few books about Lewis and Clark for middle school students and this is a excellent book for that age. The author did a great job. It is far from dull and inspires folks to learn more about Lewis and Clark.

not a novel
this book is deceiving...i admit, some will find it interesting, but clark jumps around with no transitions. it is more of a journal, or a collection of essays. she does describe in detail a number of things in rome, yet if you are looking for a novel or a piece of literature which is cohesive this is not the book for you.

As good as a vacation...
If you need to escape from the drudgery of your everyday life for awhile than this is the book for you.

Clark's masterpiece is as good as a month in the country. And not just any country either. All of Italy is opened to you by the mind and imagination of Eleanor Clark. She covers the territory from the haunted villa of Hadrian to the dangerous hills of Sicily and the cool depths of Saint Peter's Cathedral. You will meet with the ghost of the Emperor himself, a modern gangster cum matinee idol and the pilgrims of a Papal Jubilee.

Clark's prose is a whirlwind that leaves you breathless. She throws off sparks in all directions like a Catherine's Wheel. You won't "get" all of this book on the first go round but it is well worth a second and a third reading.
