Required reading for every Graphic Designer...
I stole my copy from a friend and never returned it! This is one of the best reference books for historical graphic design styles. The book is very well organized, and contains quite a few color illustrations. It has given me hours of inspiration when I have an assignemnt to do for a client. They have examples of everything from Victorian packaging to Psychedelic poster art. This book would make an ideal gift for a student just learning the field, or an old pro that has been around for years.

Essential reading for anyone interested in graphic design
This book is essential reading for anyone remotely interested in graphic design. I use it as a reference for my students in graphic design classes. It's a beautifully concise summary of the history of graphic design styles - and gives visual examples as well as background information connected to the social forces that shaped the trends examined. If you are a student - it's a great first taste of the styles and movements that influence current graphic designers. If you are currently working in the field - it's a must have reference book.

Great, BIG beautiful book
This is a wonderful, large & colorful volume full of interesting and often unusual photos. There are pictures and text of everything about the fair from the greatest, most popular exhibits and events to the smallest details. Included are color photos of posters, collectibles, toys, souvenirs, postcards & etc. Trylon & Perisphere is an authoritative and definitive book recommended for anyone with an interest in the subject matter of the 1939/40 world's fair. If you can find a copy, let me know; I would love to own it myself! Thank you for this great work.

LARGE book meets expectations
This beautiful book met nearly every expectation and desire I had for it when I first heard of it and requested it. I was looking for authoritative and definitive text and photos of this wondrous event, the 1939 New York World's Fair, and this great, big colorful book has it all. There are many unusual views of the various exhibits, buildings, details and paraphernalia (collectibles) from the fair. It is an absolutely fascinating reference for anyone interested in this slice of cultural history. Thank you for it!

The face of literature
A handsome book of 270 book jackets clearly showing the very wide range of styles publishers used to sell their wares. All the covers are shown complete with the designer's name in most cases, none of them are angled or overlapped, thankfully! A lovely feature is the use of still life photos of the book and the jacket complete, many of them with tears and creases on the jackets, looking as if they have just been rescued from a second-hand bookstore.

These jackets are such a contrast to the covers shown in a book I recently reviewed, 'The Great American Paperback', a colorful collection of six hundred covers (annoyingly designed so that they nearly all overlapp each other) from the forties, fifties and sixties. These covers are extremely conservative in their design approach, a predictable painting with crude typography for the title. It was not until the mid-sixties that paperback publishers turned to eye-catching paintings and photography with intergrated typography.

In contrast the covers in 'Jackets Required' are bursting with creativity, the chapter on non-fiction has some particularly striking designs. The back of the book has a portfolio of six designers including my favorites, Alvin Lustig and Paul Rand. There is a designer and title index, someting that was sadly missing from 'The Great American Paperback.

Heller and Chwast have produced a super book that design students and fans of popular culture will enjoy for a long time.

Macabre....but my kids love it
My twin boys have adored this book since we picked it up by accident at the local library when they were two years old. Now they've just turned three and we have rented it from the library so many times that we've finally decided to buy our own copy! There's just something about the story and text (and illustrations) that they adore. It's somewhat macabre ("Humpty's insides will soon be out" and a few pictures of Humpty lying on the stretcher) but I think this is what makes it all the more fascinating to them. They can recite the rhymes almost word for word and every time we read it together they find something new in the illustrations. I would highly recommend this book but would disagree with the recommended age group - I think kids as young as two would also like it, especially if they are familiar with the traditional Humpty Dumpty rhyme (or have slightly twisted senses of humour as my boys obviously do).

good for teaching ESL
The text is written in a pattern of a number followed by a plural noun. This makes it easy for students of English as a second language to follow.

If you are teaching Asian students, who usually have trouble with the plural form, you might like this book.

Big Fun PLUS a Great Civics Lesson for Children!
Lively verse and wonderful illustrations make this a fun read for young children. On top of it, Santa's run in with a wizard who wants his job lays the foundation for an exciting election. And, there are ballots included so your child can mail in his vote. Great gimmick to get the kids involved.
