A Man Called Lion: The Life and Times of John Howard "Pondoro" Taylor
Published in Hardcover by Safari Press (1996)
Author: Peter Hathaway Capstick
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

You have to be a real fan to enjoy this.
Don't get me wrong here, I'm one of the biggest Capstick fans there is but what I've seen from him is this: He either writes a nail biting account of personal or researched adventures or he rambles on about some boring life chronology spiced up by only a few tidbits of adventure or peril. Thats the way parts of Silent Places is and thats how this book is. If you are a fan of John Taylor or are interested in getting a history lesson of the everyday life of someone like him, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

Me, I'm a fan of the man who writes about the true life (or not)near death experiences of Corbett, Patterson, and himself in exotic bush locations in a time long since forgotten.

I knew what I was getting into when I bought this book but, hey, it's a Capstick book and I have to read 'em all. It's not a terrible book but it's definitely not Long Grass or Dark Continent.

A man called Lion
I have enjoyed Capstick other stories in the past, but this one bored me to tears. It is nought but a rehash of "Pondoro" with some extra information from casual acquaintances of the Irish writer/hunter. The fact that Taylor was a homosexual didn't deserve chapter after chapter since, despite Capstick's analysis, his more serious failings were a total disregard for the Law and an inability to hold on to his pennies. That brought about his downfall, not his preference for the same sex. John Taylor deserved a better epitaph than this book.

Never again will there be men like this.
This is a very good review which is based upon many personal experiences with the subject. It is also honest and doesn't whitewash anything about the man. I found it riveting reading. I read it in only a couple of days.

not a great overview
i was disapointed by this book and the presentation of it.

its alright
plain and simple its a nice book and i like oliveria but i really don't think it was worth the price new- and i have quite a few books on painters.

Incredible book about an incredible artist!
Just the right amount of history and ample full-color depictions of the artist's masterful use of gesture, color and raw expression. This book really showcases Oliveira's amazing versatility and his under-rated virtuosity as a painter. Oliveira's work should be included among the greats of contemporary art--and this book proves it. Wow!

Overhyped PhotoJ Churn Out Mediocre Ego Inflated Retrospec.
Come on. These guys are OK, but do they really deserve their own book? Yeah, they've got the twin factor going for them, but as photographers I wouldn't spend 60 bucks on this book unless my coffee table was lacking a good paperweight. You're better off spending the money on some Tri-X film and shooting yourself. Trust me, you'd learn a lot more then flipping through "In Times of War and Peace".

Incredible Book By Inspiring Photographers
This is the best photography I have ever purchased. Amazing work these two brothers have done over the years. I was touched and awed many times when I was turning the pages. I spent an hour in my favorite reading chair silently looking through this book, beginning ten minutes after it arrived at my apartment. It is an inspiration to anyone who takes photographs. This book has incredible integrity and beauty. The photos are not only glimpses into important events of the last 20 years, but they also work very well as examples of real mastery of the camera and of the power of images in our lives.

This book means a lot to me. Every photography student should have it on their shelf. It has helped refresh my faith in the importance of taking pictures.

I've learned a lot from it and I would like to express my gratitude to the Turnleys.

Galveston that was
I expected to see pictures of Galveston as it was . This is a bunch of pictures of Galveston decayed.

Beautiful photos; fascinating history
The city of Galveston, Texas was a vibrant, prosperous port at the start of the 20th century, outstripping even New Orleans. Fine Victorian homes were built by prosperous merchants, many in grand style. The deadly hurricane of 1900 dealt the city a blow from which it never entirely recovered. But Galveston's economic slump had a silver lining -- as shown in "The Galveston That Was." There was no economic incentive to tear the old homes down; so scores of these remarkable Victorian homes survived, though many fell into disrepair. Howard Barnstone secured two superb photographers and wrote text for this beautiful book, which displays the faded glory of Galveston's Victorian architecture. The book's first edition inspired Galvestonians to restore many of these homes, and sparked a preservation revival there that lasts to this day. Always a beach destination, Galveston now draws visitors to the Texas coast for beautifully restored Victorian homes and historic business district, the Strand. The book's photographs are simply beautiful and the concise history of Galveston is intriguing.

Professional? Misleading title?
This book is only good for beginners. The coverage is quite general and lacks many useful technical details. I wonder if the title should be "Beginning MS Site Server 3.0". Many Wrox books are very good except this one. However it is still better than other Site Server books (cos there are not many published yet).

Most comprehensive book available to date for Site Server
I haven't had a chance to read the book yet, but I have thumbed through, and it looks like it is going to be worth some serious attention. We have several Wrox books at the office, and they all are great.. (ADO, Beginning ASP, etc.). This one appears to be written to the same standard.

Buy this one over the Site Server Bible!

Great Reference
This book is a great reference book when used in combination with other books and documentation on Site Server. If you are developing with the SS Foundation you know the lack of documentation on the product. I recommend adding this book to your library mainly because there are very few available on Site Server.

Chasing Cezanne: A Novel

clumsy and hastily penned Mayle
I've enjoyed several of Mayle's other books, but this one is an amiable clunker. The mystery plot is buried under the guise of globetrotting and eating good food. The book would have read much better without the dumb chase scenes (the "hit man" following our narrator) and with more meals. After all, it's mood, ambience and food that Mayle specializes in, not characterization and plot, both of which are sorely lacking.

This book is so mediocre that it's not even a good beach read. You won't care much what happens in this "art" mystery because the plot is so thrown together. One gets the feeling his editor said, "Okay, we need a book in a week." I won't hold it against Mayle since his other books are much more charming, but this one is almost totally devoid of this usual charm.

Treachery and Haute Cuisine--Lots of Fun!
If you like fast-moving and exciting action mixed with jet set characters, haute cuisine, and treachery among the fine art set in the South of France, then this book is for you. Peter Mayle has written another fun-filled novel that takes you on a merry ride from New York to the South of France. Characters include an honest and fast thinking photographer and his adorable assistant, a devilish magazine editor, and various amusing and interesting characters from a world most of us don't know but are all too glad to visit for a time. The famous chefs who flavor the novel with mouth-watering menus and taste- tempting dishes make reading a savory experience as well as filling the reader with a desire to hop on the first plane to finer eating. Descriptions of restaurants from out of the way inns in the French countryside to the trendiest in New York City make the book a vicariou culinary experience par excellence. As for mystery and mayhem, there are fine art thieves and their accomplices, the relentless hit men who do their best to throttle the photographer and his string of good guys. All in all, this is a book that is fun to read, hard to put down, and that will make you long for sunny vacations with a bit of flare.

I Adored this Book!!!!!
Camilla is a posh British editor of the american Mag DQ. Andre is usally her favorite photographer,But something happens that he gets to involved in something someone she knows is carrying out...It is a novel about love, life, and everything in between. This is probably one of the most fun books I have read in a long time. The thing that adds the most to it is that I was on the French Riveira at the time I had read it. I stayed at La Reserve in Beaulieu, I had lunch at a friends house in Cap Ferrat. It was just so more real reading it in the process of being in all the places Andre was going, St. Paul in Vence, Nice, Cap Ferrat.. it was heavenly!! One of the main things Peter Mayle focuses on is the relaxed life in The south of france, and if you are not into that kind of lifestyle, then there is no way you will enjoy this book.

too many words, not enough art
I actually intensly hate art books where the writer gets off on his own writing so much that he forgets his subject - or at least he has lost track of his subject and I definitly think that is true of this book.

Still the best thing written on Expressionist painting.
Although originally published in the 1950s and at the time the first scholarly examination in English of German Expressionist painting, Selz's book remains the best source for an understanding of the various Expressionist movements and the underlying ideas that determined the movement's aesthetic look. I sincerely hope that it is still available; it is still the best textbook to have to present Expressionism to art history students for the first time.

A reason for more black people to become conservatives
Where do I begin with this book, littered with writings by second-hand-dealers of information from holders of glorified government jobs (academics)? Armchair leaders, who would perish without the comfort of the Ivory Tower (Noam Chomsky). I should start by saying that such foolishness could only come from a university setting. In no other case would people spend so much time trying to talk away things that have been demonstrated to be foolish by the experience of others.

A few examples:

1. Manning Marable's article compares Booker T. Washington to Louis Farrakhan? Huh? Huh? Huh? This person is selling himself as a professor of history, yet he doesn't know that the main idea of what Washington said was to AVOID trying to find a political resolution to every single problem? Louis Farrakhan generates lots of heat but doesn't shed very much light on what would be *realistic* solutions to the problems in black America.

2. Empty Phrases used every third page or so, like "People of Color." Anyone who can read the Statstical Abstract of the United States knows that peole of color have nothing in common other than being non-white. The similarities stop right there in terms of income, incarceration rates and representation in "higher" professions. Everyone seems to have looked right past this in their quest to have some subjects to generate a leadership position for himself.

3. There are almost no specific numbers or studies here. So Howard Zinn will say things like: "We are wealthy enough for full employment and free education as well a free health care for everyone." But other countries (i.e., Canada and Britain) have found out that it is one thing to promise something and then quite another to support the bureaucracy that will carry this out. A systematic study of what has really happened in other countries that have tried these grandiose ideas might change the minds of these academics. But, as always, evidence is neither mentioned nor presented. But these articles are ALL very light in terms of their analytical gravitas.

Bottom line #1: Black America has been set back a good long way by relying on arguments like these presented in this book. If anything, reading this book has made me even MORE conservative. Bottom line #2: The government cannot legislate every problem out of existence. (See Sub-Saharan Africa/ China for textbook examples.)

A good intro
This slim book is a nice introduction to a lot of amazing political writers. It is just an introduction and does not go into any real depth. At the cost, it is not worth it to get the hardcover. Get the paperback.

Eh... this one didn't thrill me.
I was relatively dissatisfied with this book. As with most of the "UNLEASHED" books, they attempted to cover too many topics in too short a time. The result is a book with lots of jumping around and very little real "meat." Their coverage of topics was always cursory, and more along the lines of browsing through programming Windows95, than UNLEASHing it. I'd definitely pass this one up
