Inventing Japan is a great book about postwar Japan dealing with everything from the labor movements, the Koran War, the middle-class, the zaibatsu, the Cold War and American policy in Asia. The author brings together information and makes points with such ease that you can't help but say, "I knew that." For example-

"What survived from MacArthur's tenure in Tokyo was what the Japanese found acceptable, and in this respect the postwar reformation was somewhat similar to the Meiji Restoration."

The book is full of answers to questions I had about postwar Japan. Is greatly detailed but not overwhelming. I'm happy I found it.

I have made four trips to Australia using various versions of this guide. You have to remember that it started off as a backpacker's/ alternative travel guide and has kept the strengths (in depth coverage of offthe beaten track areas) as well as the weaknesses (concentrates on low end travellers) of that approach. It needs to be not just revised and updated but also completely rewritten from scratch. The book is also geared to the traveller who is already in Australia. For example, it is extremely sparing in giving out email addresses and, after all these editions, still does not give the Australian postcodes for places. In its attempt to cover the entire country, it has also gotten very bulky and inconvenient.

I like Lonely Planet and its guides, but I think that it is time for them to either abandon or change the focus of this country-wide guide. In the meantime, I am relying on their series of Australian State guides for my next trip.

Because Australia is so big.. and there is just so much to see no single book can possibly cover the whole country. That's why lonely planet has published so many titles pertaining to this country.

I think the intention of this book is to give insight into what is available where... then select the relevant lonely planet guide for the area that most interests you.

A lot of people don't know what is where in Aus, as an outline to learn... I think this book serves anyone very very well.

It's much cheaper to buy this book.. and choose where you want to find out more about... than buying the complete series of lonely planet guides in the Australia range.

"Pagen" [sic] is misspelled in the Beowulf introduction. Henry II is described in the introduction as having ruled from 1154 to 1177, when in actuality, he ruled until his death in 1189. The more I read, the less I trust what I'm reading. I recommend M. H. Abrams' Norton anthology instead.

This is an excellent anthology, with generous selections, lively introductions, and beautifully reproduced color plates. Though published on "bible paper," there is very little bleed-through. It is an splendid alternative to the Norton Anthology, not only for its ample contexts sections and for its loving attention to both canonical and new writers (especially women writers of the Renaissance), but also for its favoring of complete works--More's Utopia, Sidney's Apology, etc. I've been using IB this semester, and though there are, as the (I think excessively) negative reviewer notes below, occasional errors, these are not unusual in massive endeavors. An old game in the 1950s used to be to send grad students in search of errors and typos in the standard literary critical books of the day. I'm sure these will be cleaned up. For now the book works especially well for "survey" courses and for upper-level, specialized courses, when supplemented by another paperback or two, or course packets.

We have been searching for a guide to wildflowers specifically for New York State and this is the first such book we have found. While it does show and describe at least 350 varieties, we have found 2 wildflowers so far on our own property that do not seem to be in this book. The color photos show the flowers of the plant clearly but we feel that there should have been more effort to include the leaves of the plant in the photo or a pencil and ink drawing of the leaf next to the photo. The written description of each plant inlcudes a description, i.e. basal, etc. of the leaf and the plant growth but this is rather difficult to understand where a photo or drawing would have been easier.
