Great book, beautiful --However, not perfect
This book is great, it has beautiful pictures and info. However, I did find a few things that were not to great. First of all, when describing the Alaskan Malamute, the illustration had a pure black dog... Malamutes are NEVER pure black, they can be all white but that's the only exception for all one color, the only labeled pic of malamutes are an all white and all black, no markings! They also had very vague info on them. Malamute's real name is ALASKAN MALAMUTE, no where in the book did it say ALASKAN in front of malamute, well howcome you put SIBERIAN and ALASKAN in front of the husky? And two, I got a pup this August and I'm going to start training, so I read the chapter called "How to train Sled Dogs" it had absolutely nothing about training them except for, start training as pups! Blank spot! On what do you train them? All in all though, this was a beautiful book, I just use it for the pictures now.
Information wrapped inside a beautifully illustrated book
"Born to Pull" was recommended to me by the owner of the kennel where our family would be going for our first mushing experience. Though aimed at upper elementary kids, the amount of information is amazing. The illustrations enhance the content beautifully; particularly stunning is a painting of a team pulling under the Northern Lights.
Most enjoyable are the stories interspersed throughout; stories from well-known mushers such as Gary Paulsen and Jamie Nelson. Stories of dogs that decided to run the wrong way at the end of a race, and of dogs who found the way home in a raging storm.
Reading this book did not guarantee that I would not wipe out on the sled, but when I did, I knew just what the snow hook was!
Not for kids only!
I found this book in the kids' section while looking for Christmas presents. Knew nothing about it, and sled dogs are not my dog-of-choice, but was immediately compelled to buy it even tho it cost more than I'd planned. Amazingly full of good information, understanding of dogs and pulling, but there was a twinkle in the eye of the author, too. Imagine the runway team surrounding the ice-fisherman and eating all his catch!
The illustrations too are extraordinary. Such obvious awareness of the inner workings of dogs is unusual. The expressions of each dog are wonderful.
Highest recommendation for sled-dog enthusiast or any dog person, young or old.

Up North By Sam Cook
This is one of the best books I've read in a long time about going up north. Fish, hunting, camping, and meeting other people are the best settings in the book. The book makes you feel like your up in the wilderness hunting or on the lake fishing.
Great to bring on trips and read the stories.
It's just a really good book about life in general and especially the way we feel about being Up North.

...from an "old Charlie Guide"
If you want to know about the Charles L. Sommers Wilderness Canoe Base or learn about a rich tradition of Scout canoeing and the wilderness experience, this book is required reading. If you thought you had a pretty good idea of what Charlie's place is about, you will be amazed by the new stories and lore that you will read in these pages. You will learn about the "movers and shakers" at the Base, including Charles L. Sommers, Carlos Chase, Frank Bean, Parley Tuttle, Hod Ludlow, Henry Bradlich, Cliff Hanson, and Sandy Bridges. You will learn about the special relationship that the Base has enjoyed with Sig Olson, Bob Cary, Jim Brandenburg, Sam Cook, Joe Seliga, Real Berard, and Steve Fossett. Described in time slices, the history of the Base is carefully laid out as the first trips are launched from Winton, the lodge gets built, the Canadian program is established, and the food and gear are developed and adapted. To the story of the Base, add a bit of trail spice and some beautiful photography by Jim Brandenburg, and you begin to understand why you need to own a copy. Gene Felton has done a masterful job of gathering the stories of the Base, describing a program that has touched the lives of thousands of Scouts, Scout leaders, and staffers over a 75 year span. Gene tells the story with humor, and with an obvious reverence for the Base's program and its colorful tradition. Many of us share your love for this very special place, Gene. Thank you very much.

getting away from it all
Dorothy Molter was an independent woman who managed to live her dream in one of the most beautiful and serene wilderness areas in the world. In her cabin on a lake in the boundary waters canoe area, she lived alone and in harmony with nature. Thirsty canoe travelers would stop by to visit Dorothy and she offered them root beer, which she bottled herself. This is an inspiring, true story of independent living; highly recommended to anyone who has ever dreamed of living in the woods.
An enjoyable story about a woman in the North woods
Root Beer Lady is the story of Dorothy Moulter, a woman who moved from depression era Chicago to the Northwoods of Minnesota. If you've ever visited, or read about, Ely Minnesota, doubtless you've heard a little about her.
Although the story is interesting for the most part it does drag a bit in some areas. I found it pretty fascinating though. Kinda makes you want to pack everything up, and move to the middle of no-where.

Outstanding story
I have been going to the BWCAW for the past three years. Reading this story just brings back all of the memories that I have been collecting over the last 3 years. Reading this book you can take yourself back to the wilderness area by moose lake, ensign lake and farther north to knife lake. It's a beautiful area that all should visit.

Quiet Magic
Quiet Magic provides the reader with a real insight to what Nothern Minnesota and the Boundry Waters Canoe Area is like. Author Sam Cooks' writing style gives you a good mind set of what the wilderness is like up north here. If you are from a large city or down south this book may intigue you to take a vacation fishing up in the BWCA. My thoughts on this book are that it provides me a resident of the area that the author is writing about a eye opening experience to what beauty nature really provides for me. The book is writen in first person format, but it almost puts you in the scene with him giving you that feeling that I could be experiencing the same pleasure that Mr. Cook is. The book is easy reading and not very long and would recommend this book to just about anyone, weather your nich is outdoors or indoor.
