No fiction tops it!
Jennifer Carter's absolutely enthralling story of how she transformed herself from bank teller to world adventurer has more real-life action than a dozen thriller novels. She's faced challenges ranging from skydiving with a defective parachute, to being trapped INSIDE a shark cage WITH a hungry shark(!), to enduring the nightmare of an abusive first marriage, and has emerged from all of them stronger, more determined, and willing to share the secrets of her success.

Her book, written with her husband, double-Oscar-winning composer and songwriter Joel Hirschhorn, is exciting, inspiring, and always entertaining. The passages of her first dive to the Titanic are poetry and do justice to the magnificence of the legendary ship herself.

No work of fiction can top it. We highly recommend Titanic Adventure.

A Great story of adventure and triumph
I have had the distinct pleasure of corresponding with Jennifer through e-mail and I must say that she is one neat lady. As you will see from her book, she has lived a tough life, but a very exciting one. She contributed a story to my Titanic website and I am thankful for that. I highly recommend this book. It is a fascinating read and a must for any Titanic enthusiast.

The Adventure Continues
James Cameron captured the imagination of millions by taking them back to 1912 to see the splendor and tragedy, both material and personal, of Titanic's maiden voyage. Through the eyes of one woman and one man, he captured an age and a timeless human drama. Picking up the story in 1987 with the first voyage back to Titanic, Jennifer Carter and Joel Hirschhorn do much the same thing, and in many ways pen a true sequel to the 1912 epic. Their true-life story, a gripping adventure of the sort usually found only in the first-class fiction, is certainly a story about the world's most famous ship, but it is also a story of humanity. Ultimately, it is the chronicle of one woman's courage, an adventure which is in some ways a spiritual oddessy as well. If you enjoyed James Cameron's epic, book passage on Jennifer Carter and Joel Hirschhorn's sequel.

A Complex Life Simply Told
William Carter claims in the preface to this biography that his goal is "to understand, as well as one reasonably can, how Marcel Proust, generally considered by his peers a talented but frivolous dilettante, came to produce what is arguably the most brilliant sustained prose narrative in the history of literature." Fortunately, this is not his goal at all. Professor Carter knows better than to attempt any such thing.

About four months before his death, we read, a letter from one of his first English fans infuriated Proust. Sydney Schiff had endorsed the anti-Proustian idea that when one knows someone, there is no need to read a book by that person. Nonsense, Proust replied: "Between what a person says and what he extracts through meditation from the depths of where the integral spirit lies covered with veils, there is a world." (p. 784)

Some superficial spirit must in a weak moment have seized Professor Carter's pen when he came to write his preface, for his fascinating and enjoyable volume implicitly disavows the ambition to explain how Proust achieved his masterpiece. What Carter does instead is to recount, based on what records remain and in a simple and unornamented narrative style, the facts of Proust's life from month to month. Though we do not really feel that we come close to the heart of Proust's mystery as an artist, we do now and then get an idea of what it must have been like to know Proust, and be known by him.

A Proustification
Carter captures the essence of Proust. This is a "must" read for anyone who is truly serious about "little Marcel." Fascinating! Will actually stimulate me to go back and charge through Remembrance of Things Past once again.

Life of a Brilliant Novelist
Having read George Painter's two-volume biography of Proust many years ago, I might be unfair in comparing it to Carter's new biography, but my impression is that Carter has vastly outdone Painter. He has managed to write a very detailed, yet quite readable and engrossing biography of Proust. I think that conflating Proust and the narrator of "A la recherche..." has tended to diminish the author's genius, as if he had merely written a fascinating autobiography. Carter confirms Proust as a novelist, not a memoirist. Certainly, he helps the reader understand who may have inspired Proust's characters, but makes clear that Proust's imagination was the main engine behind the world he created. Some readers might be disappointed that there isn't more literary analysis of "La Recherche" in this biography, but Carter is adept at presenting passages from the novel that are representative of its genius and beauty. I'd also like to mention that the book is physically attractive, with a handsome typeface, and that there are very few typos and grammatical errors.

Scratched the surface
Very well done. Logically laid out and easy to use. CD-ROM attachment is very helpful.

I found myself skipping the profiles and going straight to the sites and am disappointed that the number of sites are limited . . . of course they are only profiling the best. It does cover a very broad number of topics.

A good effort but they barely scratched the surface. I had a better time working the link lists at major sites.

What Many Of Us Have Been Looking For
Anyone who has lost themselves in the web searching for Civil War information know that the amount, quantity, and accessibility of material can, and does, fascinate and frustrate. Sites that looked promising turn into dead ends, information presented can be of dubious quality and, most of all, the sheer volume of material can consume many tedious hours. The Civil War on the Web highlights the best sites, and will save this researcher much valuable time. Civil War enthusiasts will also enjoy the authors' essays and summaries for the insight they provide on the state of scholarship today. A must for anyone curious about the war who has access to the internet!

My favorite gift
My wife got me this book for my birthday. I'm a big Civil War buff and even I found sites in this book that I never would have found otherwise. I found so much to read on the Civil War on the web through this book its like getting a 100 books (for the price of one). Plus, there is a CD that makes linking to the sites even easier. If you know someone who likes the Civil War, this is the book for them.

The best undergraduate econometrics book
Instills understanding by slowly going through derivations and principles, while at the same time motivating econometric analysis by referring to economic situations where it can be used. Much better than Gujarati (which tends to be a "cookery book" rather than giving an integrated treatment).

The only weakness of the book is that it focusses almost exclusively on estimation under the assumption that error terms are identicallly and independently distributed (iid). However, all other undergraduate econometric textbooks (and a lot of graduate ones too!) display this preoccupation, so Griffiths et al are no worse than their rivals.

An update to this book would also be good, as it's nearly 10 years old now.

However, its good points far outweigh these weaknesses.

Good applied econometrics for undergraduates
This book is excellent for beginners in econometrics. It is particuarly useful for people not wanting to know all the mathematics ( algebra and matrix approach) behind econometrics. Students doing term papers find it very practical as they want to know how to go from theoretical econometrics to empirical econometrics.

The Perfect Bridge to Greene
This is a great beginner's textbook. Whereas some, like Greene, are going to be too hard for some beginners, and others like Gujarati are far too basic, this book strikes an excellent balance. It's best feature is all the worked examples is gives you, including the raw data used, allowing you to enter the data into a statistical package and make sure you get the same result. This is a great confidence builder!

The Elements of Metaphysics
Published in Hardcover by Temple Univ Press (1989)
Author: William R. Carter
Amazon base price: $34.50
Used price: $15.97
Average review score:

A good introduction to a central area of philosophy
This book was the first introduction I had to the area of metaphysics. The first chapter does a good job of explaining just what metaphysics is about. It is unfortunate that most people associate the word 'metaphysics' with crystal religions and astrology because that is NOT what metaphysics means in philosophy. If one is interested in finding out what "true" metaphysics is, this book is accessible to almost anyone. The later chapters get complicated but if the reader takes some time, the material can be understood. One thing to note is that Carter's own views dominate the book and, as with anything, one should not just read this book. Readers might be interested in Peter van Inwagen's *Metaphysics* after reading this book. Also, if *Elements of Metaphysics* does get too thick, the reader may wish to read Thomas Nagel's *What Does It All Mean?* before continuing to work through Carter's book.

It is an excellent over all view of philosophy in 1 book.
I read this when I was a student and it laid the foundation for me to go on and study philosophy with the possible certainty that I understood what I was reading. I use the reasoning in this book to evaluate most everything I read, teach, write, or do.

Very good vision
One of the best of its type - good mix of strategic and tactical. could have been shorter

Great reference work
If you want one book explaining state-of-the-art thinking in procurement, this is the one. It has chapters on every important topic. It's not a book I would choose to read from beginning to end to learn about purchasing (unless I were a University student) but it's a good starting point for looking deeper into many topics.

Unique Guide for Pastors
Team Spirituality has been recommended by some major writers in the field fof Church Administration. I join them in the feeling that this book will do more forstaff administrator than any other of it type. It is an examination of the spiritual base of church leadership, and especially focused on the church staff. It can be recommended for any pastor, staff member or personnel committee memmber. There is nothing else quite like it.

For Local Church Staff and Pastors
This book starts at the begining, with the Biblical sources, and continues through present day staff realities. Guidelines for recruitment, development and operation are provided, and many instruments and processes are included that can be used in staff sessions to increase effectiveness and team spirit. An excellent guide to local church staff development.

not as good as I'd hoped
The book gives a nice overview of black geneology but it's not the only book you'll need. It's an introduction to the subject. Unless your family kept marvelous records in the old family bible this book won't get you too far.

Excellent Resource
I couldn't put this book down. It provides tips for both the novice and the experienced researcher. It was just the information I needed to begin my family history search and I'm sure I will use it often.

Excellent Starting Point
This book will get you far whether your family kept excellent family records or NOT. It discusses and addresses the difficulties most African Americans face in tracing their family history. It provides many tips and resources for obtaining family information.

Very good
I have read both hardcover texts by these authors (Undergraduate Econometrics & Learning and Practicing Econometrics) This book follows very closely with the examples presented in the textbook. Unfortunately the book doesn't go into more advanced topics(eg. Poisson, Negative Binomial...). Comparing it to other books, it is much easier to read than Green's Econometric Analysis, but does not go into the greater depth of topics as Green. IMO it helped me learn SAS quite a bit. Four months ago I had no idea how to use it.

Econometrics and SAS were meant to be together
I thought that this manual really helped me in my job. It was a great aid to the knowledge that I already had about SAS and has been a wonderful resource for me.

A limited view of Christian stewardship
23 'Model Sermons on Money and Possessions', nearly all by North American Presbyterians and of limited interest to anyone outside that continent. The Preface hints at an understanding of stewardship in terms of consumerism, haves and have-nots, refugee problems, disease, sanitation and starvation and one hoped for a new grasp of Christian stewardship with a wider agenda and touching environmentalist issues. But, alas, no! We are still predominantly in the North American church with its Stewardship Sunday and the crucial importance of renewing the annual pledge.

Alec Gilmore, University of Sussex

Great sermons on a useful subject
I am part of the group of pastors whose sermons make up this book. Our group has been meeting annually for almost ten years to share exegetical papers on passages of scripture to be used in preaching during the coming year. We decided to share the wealth with the production of this book.

In addition to contributions from regular members of our group, sermons on stewardship by professors of homiletics Fred Craddock, Tom Long, Tom Troeger also are included.

I have read the galley proofs, and whether read for inspiration, preached "as is" or used as background for original sermons and lessons, I think readers will find significant help in this volume for thinking through issues related to stewardship.
