Focuses on what you need to know for the exam
I used the book to study for the Workstation exam and it help me pass it. Very straightforward and focuses on the material for the exam. However do not use it as your only source of study. Combine with other books such as the Windows NT Workstation Resource Kit so you can cover the details.

A simple and easy to understand book for MCSE preparation
I am in the process of studying for the MCSE exams, I passed one - Workstation NT. This was the first book I read, I also read the Microsoft Technical Support Guide. The difference is that the Carter book has an 'author' and he builds a relationship with the reader which enables you to better understand the material. At times he seems a little bit too simplistic, however this is indicative of Carter's straightforward style.

Also the book is a bit repetitive in places, yet I passed the exam (workstation) successfully and the key concepts mapped out in this text have given me a sound basis for future study. The hands on workshops are also essential in reinforcing the theory.

I would recommend this text and a software test such as selftest.com questions. Inevitably as your knowledge expands you will need to get hands on experience (do the workshops), and test experience with a program that simulates the real test.

This is a very well written book which demonstrates the 'insider' knowledge that Carter brings to the text. He seems to understand the learning process a lot better than the Microsoft text, also he isn't afraid to teach to pass the exam as inevitably exams test how well you are at passing exams.

This book addresses both these issues well (passing the exam & understanding key NT WKS concepts). Happy studying :-)

Easy and Enjoyable. A real good book to read for beginners
This book has all you need to pass the workstation exam. It is easy to understand if you are not that familiar with Nt4.0. The Author really knows what he is talking about because I passed with 933/1000. Add Exam Cram and Transcenders and you have a winning combination.

Not the *best* U2 book..
Being a huge U2 fan, I read everything about them that I can get my hands on, but I gotta say I was kind of disappointed with this particular U2 book. It's mainly a collection of interview sound-bytes taken from other sources. If you want an awesome U2 book, go read U2 At the End of the World by Bill Flanagan. The Road to Pop is more of a general U2 history book, and lacks any kind of "insider" feel. If you follow the band at all, none of the stuff in this book will be news to you.

A Look at U2
Carter Alan's Road to Pop takes an extensive look at U2's career from their infancy in Dublin to the recording of their first album, Boy, to their first tour of America through their last album at the time of the book's re-release, Pop. It is a fascinating look at a band who is never at a loss for words.

Carter Alan's journey through U2 and the Media
It is not often that a reader gets an in-depth look at one of the greatest bands in the world through the man responsible for introducing them in the United States. Carter Alan's book takes the reader through 17 years of relationships with the band. The book is based off various interviews and general views of the media towards U2 through out the years. This is a MUST-HAVE for all Carter Alan fans.

A Radical Green Political Theory (Routledge Innovations in Political Theory, 1)

A very important, overdue subject that is well covered
I found Mr. Carter's subject extremely interesting and overdue.

His research appears thorough and his arguments very convincing without appearing patronizing or annoying in a 'tree hugging - hippie greeny' way. On the contrary, I found his style very level headed and convincing even to a cynic of the green movement.

My only problem with the style is that, as a lay person, I found the technical and political aspects a bit hard to get my head around at times. However, working too many night shifts was probably the reason for that.

My thanks to Mr. Carter for this important work!

PS Please publish a cheaper soft cover version so more can afford and read it.

Started strong but died.
That says it. The first few chapters were ok, but after that it got so tedious that I couldn't finish it.

Not Very Well Written
The stories are supposed to be about the "wild days of rock and roll". Unfortunately, during the course of the book, not very much interesting happens. The writing is stiff and predictable.

Life On The Road Rules
Dinky Dawson used to run sound at The Channel nightclub. I think I met him when Roy Orbison did his second to last show. When his name was on this book I flipped through it at a store and had to buy it. There are books with rock & roll secrets, and this one tells them without being a gossip book. It is a real book about real things that fans want to know - more like The Wall Street Journal going behind the scenes than the National Enquirer. Carter Alan does a good job telling the stories like he's reading this on the air at WZLX, the classic rocker in Boston where he's a dj. It is folksy, but there is great content here - stuff that you won't find anywhere else. The book doesn't say if Dawson is out there still recording people and doing sound. It would be cool to see the guy in action after reading this book.

Incomplete
Remember the MCSE STUDY GUIDE NT 4, from A. Carter. Well, that was, is and ever will be the best study guide for nt 4 out there. It helped me pass the 3 core exams quite easly

The new MCSE STUDY SYSTEM core Windows 2000, in my opinion, sirves well to pass the Server and Pro 2000 exams. But NOT the other 2 core exams (network and AD. After chapter 8 i thougt that something was missing.. Yep, it covers network and AD material, BUT NOT ENOUGH. Unless you got a lot of experience in DNS and AD, i am not sure if you will pass these exams, (or with a lot of difficulty). Why, well check it out for yourself: Go to your local store and read other books about DNS (network) and AD exams, like Sybex or the Exam Preps etc, and you will find out that details, specialy AD, have been left out in Carter's book.

AD is a new (ok, a failed copy of NDS) and complex thing. Carter DOES NOT dedicate enough chapters to explain well the in and outs of AD. You MUST understand AD because it is one the most important items of Windows 2000.. it's the very heart of administrating a Window$ 2000 network

Be pacient: the MCSE WINDOWS 2000 is a long way, more difficult than MCSE WINDOWS NT4..and you must understand ACTIVE DIRECTORY and DNS

Bye

Just okay... but it worked for me...
I agree, as few can argue, that Carter's NT 4.0 text was the text to use. The 2000 study system, I believed, was lacking specific detail on a few topics. To supplement (or I should say in conjunction with) the text I borrowed a non-production server from work and tried nearly every new feature of the Win2000 OS. I took the 70-240 exam and passed. I also purchased the complete BFQ software 70-240--good buy. I used no other study material. Perhaps Carter too assumes that the reader has experience with NT 4.0. Either way, the book served its purpose.

Yes there is repetition--it's called reinforcement. The intro chapters are great, always stating that more detail is to be found in a later chapter. The highlights of what has changed from NT4 to W2K are also a benefit.

Not as good as his NT4, but worth while for exam study. Once you pass, get something else for reference and more detail. Remember this is an MCSE study system-not complete coverage of Windows 2000.

A solid foundation
I have to thank Alan Carter for writing a great book that gave me a solid foundation for Win2K and allowed me to pass 4 cour exams. Before turning to this book, I have tried New Riders guide for 70-215 (Server) test, and it definitely was not enough to pass that test. It seems that all 4 cour exams overlap greatly, so if you are trying to pass Server without knowing anything about Active Directory or basic TCP/IP concepts, might as well forget it. "Windows 2000 is Windows 2000"--states Alan Carter, and that's how he is able to prepare you for 4 core tests with just this one item. Don't get me wrong, you will need a dedicated effort to study and practice the material, but by the time you are done, you will have a solid framework that you can hang all your future Win2K knowledge on.

Folk Art and Magic: Shamanism in Korea

not bad
A coffee-table art book filled with photos rather than a work of critical scholarship. The first-half, which concerns itself with the art of shamanism, is pretty good. The second half is an analysis and description of shamanstic rituals; it's not so good. The author clearly knows and cares a lot about Korean shamanism and its art; and he gives a fair coverage of both. But just as clearly he's not a profesional photographer or scholar of religion. I really wanted to know about Korean shamanism and the book was helpful, so even though it's expensive I don't regret buying it at all. If you also really want to know, you won't regret it either.

a useful source with very nice pictures
The first half, focusing on the spirits and the iconography, is excellent. The rest of the book is, frankly, weak on content. It has a good bibliography and some good photography. The book is helpful if you plan to visit Buddhist temples or witness Shamanist kuts. On the other hand, if you are looking for academic work, this isn't it.

Very Disappointed
This book is absolute rubbish. A total waste of money. I am very disappointed. It is more like a "how to use.." book than a preparation for the exam and does not really go into any depth on the Enterprise side of Windows NT. If you already know how to use Windows NT Server, and just want to prepare for the exam then buy a different book!

Windows NT Server 4.0 in the Enterprise
This book is a re-hash of Carter's earlier book - WINDOWS NT 4.0 The 22 chapters in this book are word for word identical to the earlier WINDOWS NT 4.0. Although this earlier is more expensive, it is well worth the difference in price as it has 6 chapters not included in the newer Server in the Enterprise book. If you have previously purchased WINDOWS NT 4.0, don't buy Server in the Enterprise. Carter's WINDOWS NT 4.0 is an excellent book and a "must-have" reference covering Server, Workstation and Enterprise.

Excellent study guide for exam
The only reason I did not rate 5 stars is that the questions while good, do not accurately reflect the exam material in some instances.

The material itself is well presented, follows a logical pattern, and is complete for exam purposes. This book will not make you an NT guru, but is quite adequate for the exam.

20 Years ago, a club called Paradise
Non-Bostonians who have seen the "Live in Boston" U2 DVD were probably a bit puzzled, when halfway through one of the songs Bono sings out "Paradise...20 Years ago....A Club called Paradise". The line is a reference to a Boston club called "The Paradise" where they played one of their first shows in the US sometime in late December, 1980.

There is much discussion among casual U2 fans I know as to where they played their very first gig in the US. (Some say New York, some say Boston.) I decided to get this book and settle the argument.

Both sides are somewhat right. Although U2 played their first concert in New York, WBCN in Boston was the first radio station in the US to play their music. Carter Allen details how he picked up a import single of their first record and was able to get the station music director to ok him putting it on.

And such did greatness get its' start.
