Beautiful book!
This is a gorgeous book of paintings by a master artist. I recommend it.

Finest book on contemporary Charleston and art in print.
I purchased my copy of this beautiful coffee-table book from John Carroll Doyle's art gallery in Charleston. The book showcases his art, but at the same time focuses on the history of Charleston through the eyes of someone who grew up there in the 1950's-present. If you are interested in exquisite art and Charleston history, by all means, this is the book for you.

Livin' La Vida Mocha
Nothing piques the morbid fascination of a dinner guest quite like a platter of veal frappuccino. Top it off with a decaffeinated stock reduction and you're a host whose meals will be recounted for decades. This book has afforded us years of excellent in-home dining, as well as cheap laughter. My wife also once used it to great effect in ridding us of an in-law babysitter that she considered too sultry and promiscuous for duty. She merely left Carmen (her young cousin, who served briefly as our sitter to my unbounded delight) with a tray of Chicken Satay Latte that she had secretly made with thrice the active ingredient. Carmen dutifully served it to the twins at dinnertime, and by the time we returned she had permanently sworn off of babysitting - as well as motherhood, marriage, and quite possibly the male gender, which she rightly surmised was in large part to blame for the scourge of children.

Guilty pleasures from corporate America
Okay, being the quintesential lefty feminist, I theoretically had better keep a distance from major multinational corporations, but I just can't abstain from Starbucks! Even if they are part of the "corporatization" of America, I proudly declare my love for them.

Since it first came to my hometown (to somehow tie in with the "Alterna-rock" facination with all things pacific NW) I fell in love with their coffee--and related concoctions. Following a stressful (but adventurous day) there is nothing more relaxing than drinking one of their numerous creations and feeling the world melt away.

The recipies in this book continue the romance by providing easy to follow recipies to satisfy the coffee lover in everybody. Little to no previous cooking experience is required, as the point of this cookbook is to help everybody wind down in a deliciously rich way.

A thoroughly beautiful cookbook. Wonderfully illustrated!
John Carroll and Virginia Rainy have done a marvelous job on the California the Beautiful Cookbook. The book is an excellent addition to anyone's coffee-table collection, as well as an inspiring work for the moderately experienced cook. John has spent years as a personal chef in California - his experience, excellent taste, and personal warmth are infused in this wonderful cookbook. His recipes are practical and incredibly delicious. My personal favorite is the crab-salad sandwich on sourdough, I've served it to many guests and always with rave reviews. This cookbook is divided into regions of California. In becoming acquainted with the book you are becoming acquainted with the culinary traditions of a myriad of cultures and flavors. This is a must-have cookbook for the serious collector - I can't believe it's out of print - do yourself a favor and find a used copy of California the Beautiful, a cookbook you will use and enjoy over and over again!

Worth every penny !!
The most wonderful book on the hardest working, most underrated HD - the 45. This book does what most fail to do, it recognises the effect this small unassuming two wheeler has had on the lives of so many for so long.

Family transport during the depression, defender of the free world, mobile shop (servicar!), post war family transport, race bike, police utility, brakedown vehicle, Europes post war intro to the HD breed, and the ultimate custom canvass. The 45 has lived many lives with reliabilty (!), dignity, and pride.

John & Garry do a superb job, and its good to see a book that contains so much UK homegrown content. - Especially the 45 once owned by Krazy Horse Kustoms very own Steve Studd (its still going strong after many years too!!).

Great Statistical Analysis of Football
This book is an excellent read for anyone who has a genuine interest in football statistics. The authors are actually statisticians themselves, and they go through each phase of the game and attempt to come up with scientific ways to rate each position, including the offensive line!

The part I found most interesting was the chapter on quarterbacks and the conventional NFL QB rating system and why it is flawed. From there the authors go into a lengthy process of building a better rating system, which more accurately reflects who the most efficient passers in the NFL are.

You would think being written by a bunch of statisticians, this book would be dull, but it is far from it! It is lively and humorous throughout, and is very easy to read. Also, most of the heavy statistics are relegated to notes, so if you are not interested in that sort of thing you can skip it easily.

All told this is an outstanding book to read if you are interested in learning the "Nitty-gritty" behind football statistics.

Human Cognitive Abilities : A Survey of Factor-Analytic Studies

An extraordinary review of a century of factorial studies
What would you think of an analysis of more than 400 datasets? John B. Carroll has given us an impressive review of the factorial analytic studies covered most of the human cognitive abilities. But, he has gone beyond the re-analysis level and has made up a new model of intelligence: "The three strata model" which will help us to avoid hopeless discussions about the nature of the most important cognitive abilities and to advance in the actually interested topics about such abilities. Specially, he finishes with the argument about the existence of the g factor but, he also recognizes the importance of the Thurstone's primary mental abilities and the Cattell and Horn's distinction between fluid and crystallized intelligence. I think everyone concerned in the cognitive abilities field should read this book and keep "The three strata model" in mind in the analysis of his/her research.
