Excellent information on pool and billiards.
Outstanding information on basic and advanced technique. It tells you about draw and follow shots, and also english. It also gives you information on straight pool, eight-ball, and many other pool games. This is in my opinion, the only book on pool and billiards you will ever need. Robert Byrne has really outdone himself by creating this masterpiece. This book should be on the shelves of every pool and billiards player. This is by far the best book on pool and billiards ever written.

A fun tour of the golden age of billiards in the US
Thank goodness for people like Robert Byrne who have the foresight to document the lives of notable people. Dan McGoorty was one such personality, and I'm glad this book is back in print.

On one hand, McGoorty was a person whom many considered a waste of life; on the other hand, he was a master of a complex and subtle game. The contrast of these two aspects of McGoorty makes for a fascinating read. There's also a section in which McGoorty shares with us his experience with other notable pool and billiard champs. Highly recommended for anybody interested in the history of billiards.

A great book from a better time in America
McGoorty: A billiard hustler's life is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It is out of print, but a few years back I got it from the Cornhusker catalog. Anyway, this book is a narrative that is just funny as hell and poignant, from beginning to end. It's all about Danny McGoorty, and his rise from being a no-name drunk pool hustler, to a drunk box car bum, and then to a sober billiard champion playing among the likes of Willie Hoppe and Ray Ceulemans. A must read for anybody who likes a story that won't slow down, and a definite must for any pool player or fanatic. Find this used or whatever, but get it!!

Memories of a Non-Jewish Childhood
I read this book many years ago and laughed until I cried. It was so typical of growing up and attending Catholic Schools. I swear that Mr. Byrne attend the same Catholic School that I attended many years ago. I am searching for a copy as I lost my original. I know that I will enjoy reading it again for the fourth or fifth time.

*The* funniest book I have ever read.
I did not grow up Catholic, but found this wonderful book to be *the* funniest book I have ever read. You are guaranteed to laugh yourself silly many times as you read this short book. The best line: "Not only had I shit my pants, I had shit my pants for nothing." The fun just never stops as you follow a 13 year old boy through the trials and tribulations of Catholic School.

An impressive, scholarly, in-depth biography
Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 by journalist Robert O'Byrne is an impressive, scholarly, in-depth biography of British art dealer and patron Hugh Lane, who earned his way from poverty to fame and respect as a specialist in the great art of the old masters. His work in the creation of public art galleries in South Africa and the Municipal Gallery of Ireland earned him lasting prestige and some controversy, until his unfortunate death on the Lusitania when it was sunk by a Germans in 1915. Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 is the fascinating life-story presentation of a man who lived, worked, and devoted himself to the trading of art.

100% pure comedy
This book is absolutely amazing! It is about as irreverant as you can get, and is something that anyone who ever went to Catholic school can relate to. I bought this book 10 years ago, and have read and re-read it so much that it has become too damaged to read again, so I came here looking for another copy.

A real page-turner. You'll feel the ups & downs so hang on!
This book is a real thriller. Like all good thrillers, there's a love story intertwined. It's a fast read and you'll almost feel the roller coaster's ups and downs. It's a quick read but well worth the time. Don't read the last two chapters right after lunch.

very entertaining
I just met Mrs. Byrne's dictionary at the home of a linguist. A houseful of brilliant linguists, and almost none had heard of any of the words. But they laughed and enjoyed them tremendously. Now I'm ordering a copy.

Though the author's intro says that all the words have been found in at least one reputable dictionary, some of these appear to be nonce words (no more established in use than a sniglet), while others are merely obscure. But both kinds are entertaining!

this hirsutorufous logophile* loves this polychrestic book
Try putting that in a single's ad and see what kind of response you get!

Mrs Byrnes has collected some of the most outrageous, unusual (for the most part) words you have ever read. This book is great for starting a party or an argument, writing up silly tests to send over the internet to your friends and winning items from radio shows. Radio shows in my area tend to ask questions such as "What is gephyrophobia?" so the listener can call in and win a prize. Sometimes the folks make up the answers ("Fear of a geography test?") but it's easy to win when you can look on page 83 and see it means "fear of crossing bridges".

This book is also helpful while playing Scrabble, especially if you play with a person who tends to come up with unusual words - if it's not in the Oxford and it's not in this book, it doesn't count for points in Scrabble.

So buy this book and entertain your friends, torment your co-workers and tease your fellow Scrabble players with bits of information gleaned from this excellent reference book. Your friends will think you're a renable renardinstead of a logastellus lout if you use this book properly.

Superlative, in a class by itself...
A wonderful resource for logophiles who have already searched through a standard unabridged dictionary. If you love words, you will love this book.

Captivating Book
I found it hard to put this book down. It's amazing how one man, Andrew, could get into so much trouble, all in the name of love.

Andrew and Frank faced one roadblock after another in persuit of their realationship. Andrew's willingness to give up all for Frank was very touching. For once, a well written gay story has a happy ending. Rob Barnes did a great job with this one and I'm looking forward to his next offering.

Finally: Good Fun Gay Fiction
I've been waiting a long time for a book like this: well-written, fun, unapologetically gay fiction. I can't recommend it highly enough. Byrnes has created a batch of well-developed characters (even the stereotypical "Mafia Princess" leaps off the page) and set them loose in New York City with wonderfully manic results. Part of my wants a sequel; the other part of me wants to leave this romantic comedy just as it is. And all of me wants another novel from Rob Byrnes.

The man mother warned you about
Andrew Westlake, middle management at a small publishing house, author of a book on coming out that did not sell, recently dumped by the boring yet handsome accountant he was dating does not feel life is going well. He sets out with his friends, in drag for the first time, to the opening of a hot new club. While there, he meets Frank, the owner of the club, handsome charming, attacted to Andrew. the problem seems to be that Hank is straight and think Andrew is a woman. While not a great start to any relationship things get cleared up and go downhill as Andrew finds out that Frank is also the son of the number two man in one of the top mob families in NYC. One that is currently engaged in a war with the other families. Now, aside from dealing with the ramifications of possibly getting Frank killed if the news of their relationship gets out Andrew is also being followed by the police, the FBI, and some shadowy figures that look like bad casting for the Sopranoes. This book was a step up from most of the light gay reading novels out there. It was enjoyable, had a bit of suspence and had you the reader both wishing Andrew would wise up and end the situation while at the same time secretly hoping things worked out with nobody getting "wacked"
A worthwile book and one that you will probably recomend to friends.

Robert Byrne is brilliant!
This is a book I come back to time and time again. As someone who plays off and on, I often refer to the book when pool is 'back' in my life. This is a keeper!

The diagrams, the history, why shots do what they do, how to play the angles, you can't beat it. Its both informative and entertaining.

How to run a table & Shot you can't learn anywhere else!
Robert Byrne has set the standard. As a state ranked player I decided to read this book. My game went to the next level. His checklist for running a table, his description of different types of "throw" shots and his simplifying the stroke all were instrumental. In pool, unlike other sports, there are few real teachers, Robert Byrne is a great teacher for the beginner to the very advanced player. It's the least expensive pool lesson you'll ever get.
