"the man without qualities" has some qualities
this 1800 page book has been placed in the same league as "the remembrance of things past" and joyce's "ulysses". if one is not put off by musil's antisemitism, and unnecessarily longwinded, only somewhat interesting, conversations, one is more than rewarded by musil's keen obervational skills and ability to portray highly ideosyncratic, pathological, psychological states. musil is a genius at capturing the subtleties of sexual relations and their consequences. in my opinion, musil lacks the basic humanity of both proust and joyce; the book would be vastly improved if a good editor eliminated a good deal of the tiresome discussions.

Complete garbage
This book was terrible. It has nothing to do with today's cloning controversy. Rather, it was a silly story about a bunch of clones who get who all get themselves killed. It made no sense and there was no suspense involved. I was extremely disappointed when I read this. I can't say enough bad things about this horrible book. Don't ever read this!!

Cloning, Fiction and Reality
This is the most literate book I have read recently that deals with cloning as fiction. The suspense is Hitchcockian--gruesome details are left to the imagination. The science is correct, a rarity in fictional works based on cloning. Burton deals with psycholigical effects on a group of 10 men who discover as adults that they are clones.
I highly recommend this book. If you are sick of gratuitous violence and sex, but want a good story; this is the book for you.

Cellmates is a great thriller: 10!!
Given all of the recent publicity surrounding the cloning of humans, I picked up Robert Burton's new book, Cellmates. This is a fast, furious read that not only makes you think about it's inevitable possibilities, but also the repercussions.

International scope
A real strength of this book is its broad scope; both in range of species, and in wide range geographically. Within a few pages there will pictures of the vulturine guinea fowl, the white-breasted nuthatch, and a red-throated diver (loon). The pictures are spectacular, whether it is wandering albatross courtship, an upside-down emperor bird-of-paradise, or a common bee-eater offering his mate a dragonfly. A minor annoyance is that the location of the species pictured is not usually listed. The text covers a wide range of species, and focuses on describing the behavior, but not allot of deeper evolutionary discussion. Some researcher names are mentioned, but there are no citations or sources for further reading. I think the book might be considered an informative, coffee-table book.

Useless, useless, useless
This book is useless. I originally bought this guide because I had a hard time understanding the explainations in the original book. Turns out that this guide explains it the exact same way. Copying basically everything in the red box in the book. Bottom line, if you can't understand the book, you can't understand this guide.

I found it helpful
The study guide goes over major ideas that you need to know for each section. It also gives example problems for studying. Found it very helpful when studying for all of my exams in my calculus III class.

This book has very colorful illustrations and some interesting bits of information, but the book is large for the for the number of knots covered and does have some misleading or wrong illustrations.

Precision and Soul: Essays and Addresses
Published in Hardcover by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (1990)

Amazon base price: $35.95
Used price: $36.24
Collectible price: $19.06

Average review score:

An author over-promoted from obscurity.
Readers will save themselves much unrewarding labor by disregarding both "Precision and soul" and, I daresay, the highly-touted "Man Without Qualities," reading instead his first work "Young Torless" and the stories collected under "Five Women." Musil's derivative philosophical and psychological preoccupations invite inevitable comparisons with Nietzsche and Freud, both of whose work is vastly more durable and fruitful. Despite the powerfully bracing, if not occasionally repellent, astringency of his style, Musil's work subsequent to "Five Women" falls considerably short of his enormous and difficult ambitions which preoccupied his later labors; and, what's more, such a gaping failure of world-historical pretension tends to pollute enjoyments one might otherwise have had in reading it.

Frustrating and disappointing and a waste of my good money.
STUDENTS BEWARE !!! It is frustrating, disappointing AND a waste of my good money to have bought this book, only to later discover that I could not buy the subsequent volume to cover only Chapters 16-28. I now have to purchase Ch.ONE thru 28, because these money-grabbing scoundrels did not write/publish the follow-up ! I am extremely disappointed with having to re-purchase the first 15 chapters, which are now, to me, superfluous! They are a done deal! All I need is the textbook for ch. 16-28. The Study Guide/Working Papers for 16-28 are available for purchase...why not the damned textbook???
