Mr. Brown goes a long way to test his theories. Recreating the articles of every day life was at times arduous and demanding, but his work was not in vain.
What I liked most was the practicality of the author. Instead of writing from the lofty towers of "academia" and pure theoretical knowledge, he and his small band of peers proves the discoveries and findings at archeological digs are based on real events, not some kooky theory. The people described did exist, and after reading this book they will become more real to you.
The knowledge gained from reading this book is immense and is time well spent.

This is the best book I've read on Florida's Paleo-Indians so far, not only for identifying pottery, tools (both shell & stone) and other artifacts, but the author's details on reconstructing the methods of creating and using the same, are wonderful. The photos and drawings of hundreds of different potsherds are alone worth the price of the book. At last I can not only identify the many pieces I have picked up over the last several years, but gain a greater understanding of the people who created them.

A timeless gem! This informative guide from Robin C. Brown will make Florida's past come to life, whether you're an amateur or professional paleontologist. The photos are large, clear and ideal for comparing your finds, and the text is concise and easy to understand. You might need two copies: one for the field and one for your home or office.

Excellent discussion of Florida's paleo past and photographs of typical Florida fossils make this book an indispensable tool for the Florida fossil enthusiast. I've worn my copy out by going back to it so often!

The day my childbirth class was to start I was put on bed rest. Although I had read a lot about pregnancy and birth, I still didn't really know what it would feel like to have a baby. Reading these accounts of births helped a lot -- I felt I was much better prepared for the experience. I also liked Labor Day, edited by Ann-Marie Giglio, but that collection was relentlessly positive. This book include stories from women who weren't thrilled with their experiences, which seemed more honest.

The stories are organized by where the birth occurred: hospital, birthing center, home. Reading the different accounts reassured me that I had chosen the location that was right for me.

I'd recommend this book for anyone wondering what it's like to give birth.

I'm far beyond my pregnancy experience now, but this book gave me a look back. I so identified with these women. What struck me was that these narratives are more than women dealing with the pregnancy experience; these are their stories of the conflicts and struggles in their lives, stretching into the relationships with spouses, other children, parents, and themselves. This is a must-read for all pregnant women, and for mothers of pregnant daughters. Great stuff!!

This was a marvelous read although its flaws were sometimes predictable. I will try to minimize references to the flaws because the book was generally a joy to read. Payne has spent his passion on whales and presents a treasure trove of information, about the behavior, history, plight, and politics of the great cetaceans. Where he sticks to empirical science (which fortunately is most of the book), the eminent whale biologist takes the reader along on a wonder-filled journey beneath the waves. Accounts of his personal life fit nicely with accounts of his work. The reader comes to feel that, in some sense, he knows right whales and humpbacks, and knows Mr. Payne. The insights into the psychology, economics and politics of whaling are fascinating and troubling and are issues with which more people should have some familiarity.
The book is so good that I almost hate to offer any detracting comments, but in the interest of truth I must: (1.) Payne assigns a kind of well-intended and hopeful 'happy face' to zoological and marine parks. Yes, zoos and marine parks do educate the public, but that education is primarily this -- that wild animals make excellent and profitable corporate merchandise. For compelling counterpoint read Jack Turner's The Abstract Wild. (2.) Payne's metaphysical musings are too typical of a large number of biologists. Gaia is not science; it is a philosophy of aesthetics similar to aboriginal pantheism. The concept of "collectively immortal" biology presents the conclusion that, as Payne says, Life is god. It makes for a pleasant enough concept until it is subjected to critical analysis. Some priests of biology should (collectively?) think a little deeper. One needn't adopt a Star Trek religion or a form of shamanism to respect bio-diversity. Assailing Christianity because it was the claimed practice of "God fearing" and blood thirsty sea captains is as logically dubious as attacking biological science because it was the claimed practice of a Dr. Josef Mengele, is the claimed practice of the Japanese "scientific" whaling industry, and is in fact the practice of developers of biological warfare agents. The evil besetting nature is not theism, it is holy capitalism, saint self-interest, a god called greed, and hard-hearted indifference. In short, small minded selfishness. Most scientists, including Payne, are at their best when they stick with science (although the mathematical sciences have lent the world some excellent philosophers).
All nay-saying aside, this is a book well worth reading.

I am astonished that this book is out of print. How can this be? Why aren't people using it as a textbook in writing, psychology, ethics and marine biology classes? Why aren't high schools and universities clamouring to have Roger Payne speak at their commencement exercises? Why isn't he being interviewed by Oprah and Good Morning America? Why isn't the name Roger Payne as familiar to us as Jacques Cousteau or Keiko the whale? Believe me, it should be.

Roger Payne is a cetacean scientist - that is to say he studies whales - however that doesn't begin to tell you about what he really does or who he really is. You see, Roger Payne swims up to Right Whales and looks them in the eye. He hangs upside down next to Humpback whales in order to experience their bone shaking songs up close. He spends hundredsd of hours a year on boats watching and recording the movements, behaviors and songs of whales. Best of all, Roger Payne has stories to tell about another world that exists beyond land. He knows and can prove, for example, that Humpback whales sing. Yes sing. Not simply make sounds but create rhythm, patterns and notes in sequences that put some of our greatest composers to shame. He has stories to tell of his encounters with whales that make it abundantly clear that they think, feel and communicate. In short Roger Payne has something to teach us about our relationship to another species on this planet, and we should be listening.

But if you're not the sort to read a book just because it would be good for you, read it because Payne is a fine writer whose stories are well told and fascinating, and whose scientific explanations are so clear that even the most scientifically-challenged person can follow. Read it because it will enchant you with its descriptions of whales at play and captivate you with its studies of why whales do what they do. Read it because it will challenge your mind and touch your heart. It's that good.

Roger Payne brings up issuses that this world is going to have to deal with in the years to come. His passion for cetaceans shows through in every page, I encourage everyone to read this masterpeice!

This was a short story about seduction. I have nothing against seduction. I like it a lot. BUT, you have to care about the characters in order for the seduction to be touching and moving. Ms Brown writed excellent sex/love scenes, but needs to write a good story around them. Skip this book. There are many good books out there to read. Try Madeline Hunter, Mary Balough, Connie Brockway, Jo Beverley, to name a few, if you want good stories with moving intimacy.

I found this story to be a bit to predictable for met. It is one of the early romance stories by Sandra Brown. If you are used to her suspense stories this will be a let down.

Blair is a dancer who had injured her knees and moves to a small town where a former dancer friend of hers lives. In this town she meets her landlord and a romance blooms....

This refers to the abridged audio tape version. It may be better in book form it seemed way to predictable in this form.

This book is sweet and fun to read. These people are like people you might know . . . and that makes it interesting. It is a nice short read and perfect pick-me-up!

Cooking healthy meals for two is my goal each day and Eleanor's book helps me do that with confidence. While I miss seeing color photographs, I highly appreciate the simplicity of the recipes, the dietary information at the bottom of each page and especially Eleanor's own notes and serving ideas after every recipe. The Hungarian Goulash is one of my favorites, so far. Can't wait to try the Gingerbread Delight and the Curried Vegetable Medley.

The recipes are easy, fun, nutritious and tasty. I highly recommend this book to those who are cooking for one and who tend to neglect their dietary needs.

Multiply the shark's length by 8, add a very different setting, and let the carnage begin! This was actually the first of the fictionous MEGALODON books ever around, and it really isn't a bad one. Its got this really big research boat over this really deep ocean. The americans on the really big boat see a gold mine at the bottom, and have decided to send their Ohio-class submarine down for a look-see. Unfortunatly, they find not gold but a bloated, mossy shark that proceeds to kill them all. The trouble with the Americans is that they just don't know when to quit, as more and more people go down in metal things and find themselves dead or in very deep trouble. In the first chapter, you are led to believe that believing in the megalodon will be a quick, easy process, but really, nobody believes it till the final pages. All in all, if you even marginally like these books, pick it up if you can find it at a book fair something. I can guarentee you it won't cost that much

i thought that the book did not have engouh love and care for the sharks i think you should treat sharks with more respect they are not cold blooded killers they are just hunting for food not killing for fun like most humans sharks have been around longer then humans and i think we should treat them with the respect that they need and want

This (lucture note series) book have important points to acquire in your Dermatology rotation. starting with history and physical examination then discussing diseases in an organized waywhich makes it interesting to read. Still not comprehensive and can not be used as a text book.

This was the first Sandra Brown book that i had ever read. Once i began reading it i could not stop. I read the entire thing in four hours and i must say it was excellent. It was your classic love story with the a little added twist. Carter was her best friends fiancee! This book really hit home with me. I enjoyed watching Carter and Sloan become one in the sea of love. I don't want to ruin the ending for anyone else, but it will bring tears to your eyes! Since this book i have read 4 other Sandra Brown novels and have enjoyed them equally. Keep up the good work Sandra!

This was the first Sandra Brown book I read and I absolutely loved it! I had a very hard time putting it down but with 3 children you have to put the book down occassionaly. I am a true believer in love at first sight because that's how it happened with me & my husband we've been together fo 12 wonderful years and we are still madly in love!!!! I enjoyed the whole romantic story line between Sloan & Carter and would read it again and again as well as other Sandra Brown books.
