It has some flaws, but overall it's an interesting read
I don't think this book is the best thing since peanut butter, but considering most of the schmaltz out there about AIDS, this is a fairly realistic and unsentimental novel (it reads like non-fiction, and in some ways it is) about taking care of people who are ill. One could make the argument that her tone can be condescending at times--home-health care aides aren't always entirely honest--but it didn't take away from my enjoyment. In fact, I read it in one day.

Engrossing
I picked this book up in the store and read the whole thing right there (and then forgot the title and author! I'm glad to have rediscovered this information). The book doesn't quite feel like fiction-- with its attentiveness to detail and its impressive ability to convey the complexities of both author's and patients' situations, all the characters feel so real. What was the Kirkus Reviewer yawning over?

incredible
This is one of the best books I have ever read. That Kirkus review is wildly off-base. The Gifts of the Body broke my heart.

Expose Yourself to a Dizzying Array of Minds - Read It!
This book is a wonderful introduction to the thoughts and philosophies of some of today's most radical thinkers. The interview format works well, as it allows for spontaneous insights from the interviewees. The subjects range from poets to scientists to cultural commentators (ie Terence McKenna), and the authors do a notably good job of revealing some common themes between all of their philosophies. If you want to know where the world is heading, read this book!

Fascinating!!
This book contains a lot of fascinating and leading-edge ideas from an array of amazing individuals. Because it's a series of interviews, it's easy to pick up and put down and read over again. I've given it to several (smart) friends over the years, and it's inspired me to read other works by and about some of the very interesting people and ideas discussed here... in a world that often seems awash with stupidity and brutality, this book offers the hope intelligence might actually still be evolving within our species.

BETTER BREAK A CURSE ON YOUR LIFE IN NAME OF LORD JESUS!
Yes, I strongly agree with Dr. Rebecca Brown about the curses. Read Gal 3:13. It said that you will be set free from a curse by Lord Jesus. Please do not let a curse remain in your life. If you do, your life on this world will be destroyed. That does not mean that go to Hell by a curse. This book will help you how to break a curse through name of Lord Jesus. THAT IS A MUST FOR YOUR LIFE.

Yes, I had an similar experience. In 1989, the woman cursed (insulted) me twice. The trouble in my life started forever. When I accepted Lord Jesus as my Savior and Lord, a curse still remained in my life (Trouble still in my life!) Until I read this book, I now understand it. I prayed to God and informed God that I forgave her for insulting. Now I felt better! Big Amen!

In name of Lord Jesus, I am praying for you! Amen!

The Curse is Broken in "Unbroken Curses"
I am so thankful to "our" Loving Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for it is He who came to set the captives free. I cannot begin to express my gratitude to God first for His direction to Sister Rebecca Brown and Brother Daniel Yoder for the God-inspired writings of this book. And then to thank the writers for their obedience to God's direction.

In the least, this book has been a blessing to me from the beginning of my reading. I realize I had a copy of this book in my home for at least 9 months after a friend refered this book to me. I am a reader and I buy a lot of christian reading material of which after reading the section on "ignorance" I will stop for awhile. My mother is 90 years old this year of 2000 use to tell us "that God will hold us responsible for the books we have in our possession" I now say it to my daughter and friends although not realizing the power of those words. When the Holy Spirit illuminated my mind about ignorance...well if you haven't read the book you will need to in order to understand the impace and change this statement has in my life and resulting yours. For all those that have read the book...they too will be careful to read the material in their homes, first the Holy Word of God, the Bible and then whatever the Lord has allowed them to posses. I have chosen to redefine ignorance as the lack of access to knowledge versus the lack of knowledge.

"Unbroken Curses" in the very least is "a way out" and in the best of description uplifts the scripture "Jesus came to set the captives free". When people, good people have no explanation for the happenings in their lives...the answer lies in a unbroken curses. The authors understood their weighted responsibility in conveying this message to the people of God and their responsibility in conveying this message in truth and according to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

This book is written according to the Bible. It is a detail explanation of Curses (which are real from the beginning of this earth's creation by GOD Himself), it outlines experiences of real people, real events of today and yesterday. The Historical outlines are fascinating. The process of understanding how to determine if any curses exist in your life is simply stated for the prayerful heart.

This book must be read under the leading and prayfulness of God's Holy Spirit. If you encounter any attempt to stop you from reading this book...get yourself a prayer warrior, as I did to pray over you and for you, receive the blessing that satan will keep his hands off you and that the Spirit Of God will illuminate your mind. Then pick up this book with your Bible and read in anticipation of recieving another one of God's great blessing upon your life. The cloud will be lifted after your reading, accepting and practical application of this books writings.

God's Blessings Upon You....I will see in the earth made new. My prayers are with you!

In Jesus Name, I continue to remain in His Service. Your Sister in Christ....Lee

REBECCA BROWN IS A BOND SERVANT OF THE LORD JESUS
I, Donna read this book and found it completely in line with the Word of God. Rebecca and her husband are on the front line of the last day battle with Satan. I am very thankful they have the courage to reach out with the revelation of truth given to them by the Lord in order to help the last day church. This book is a great help to me in my christian walk as are all her other books on spiritual warfare.

The Truth about Rebecca Brown
The Truth about Rebecca Brown is exactly the opposite of what Cornerstone Magazine will tell you ;-) Rebecca Brown is a proven Christian and servant of God. Her book is a hard hitting expose of the heresies we see in today's churches, as well as Satan's tactics in deceiving Christians using his human slaves, or satanists. The Bible says Satan is an "Angel of Light" and that his servants appear as "ministers of righteousness" This is exactly the truth Dr. Brown stands on. In an age where we witness the "Great Falling Away" and where people have been given the strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, Rebecca Brown stands as one of the few representatives of the True Light (Jesus) in this world. The reader should not be dissuaded by the outright and blatant lies against Brown that have been circulated in the so called "Christian community," as such attacks against the credibility of Rebecca Brown are not new as the Bible attests.

The reader is advised to test Rebecca Brown's book with the Word of God, as that, and ONLY that is the FINAL authority as to whether Dr. Brown is telling the truth.

The end is near, and judgment beginning first with the house of God is fast approaching. Let this book confirm in your heart the truth and teach you to do successful battle against the spiritual wickedness of this world.

A must for anyone called to spiritual warfare
Only serious christians need read. I have read many books related to spiritual warfare, prayer ,satan and his army, etc. None compare to the spiritual awareness that Rebecca,s books have opened my eyes to. Truly she is a modern day saint and a christian soldier on the front lines fighting the good fight and loving the unloveable all for the cause of Jesus. If God has led you to read her books do hedge yourself in with prayer and ask for divine wisdom and protection as Satan hates for Gods children to become equipped and put on the armor treading into the trenches of his territory to save souls. This book along with the other's sum it up. If read and truly led they will make you a vessel of honor prepared for war to set the captives free and break the curses and bondage that Satan has strategically decieved people in. Praise God and thank him for Rebecca, Elaine and their ministry.

BETTER CLEANSING YOUR LIFE NOW BEFORE LORD JESUS IS COMING!
After I read this entire book, I strongly agree with Dr. Rebecca Brown again because I still feel that she is the true servant of God!

MUST READ THIS BOOK FOR YOUR CLEANSINGS (1 John 1:9). Please do not let your unconfessed sins to build in your life quickly. Do not be deceived! If you did not cleanse your life, Satan and his demons will have legal ground in your life by afflciting or indwelling! Understand it?! Good. Cleansing your life by now to becoming your vessel of a honor! Remember 1 Thess 5:23? Do not forget that we are the Temple of God. Totally Big Amen!

I am praying for you in Jesus' name. Amen!

Finding the One True God.
This book chronicles one ministry where Dr. Brown's response toher recognition of a need for increasing involvement in prayer, yieldsresultant increasing service to God. The focus on prayer in the face of seemingly daunting opposition as her only option in reaching out to those she knew needed help is the moral and method of this book.

The questionable air time given to the occult is the greatest drawback. The reader becomes unnecessarily drawn into eyewitness accounts of human sacrifices and spiritual encounters which are of little value to the central message of prayer and love for the lost.

A scary all night read, with a beautiful message about the work Jesus can do through a willing and broken servant. Perhaps an additional message is the downward spiral of behavior and depravity that is the result of falling into a spiritual lie.

Accusations and condemnation of the author are all cast by those who are without sin, I'm sure. The author claimed no personal power over sin whatsoever; she depended entirely on and represented fully the risen, living, unburied Son of God who sits on the right hand of God, sustaining all things by his powerful word; who has overcome Satan's power over Death.

Though unsettling to our culture, which has been blessed in forgetting occult spirituality with it's accompanying (too easily forgotten) atrocities, this was not all new! Selection of sacrifices from among attendees has been portrayed by Vincent Price! Yet this book does go a step further! Many of the accounts in this book are also similar, interestingly, to the magic and spiritual experiences of Chief Shoefoot of the Yanomamo Tribe in Argentinathe Family.

This is intended as an invitation, not a condemnation of mystics and occultists. Dr. Brown truly cared for 'Elaine', and Elaine expresses her appreciation in this book. A seeker as well, I also delight in the freedom from horror that Elaine has experienced; the magnificent light of God's love and power which is orders of magnitude greater than any other, and which works for our good through a personal friendship watered by prayer.

This book is NOT fiction !!!
This book came into my life after a year of being harassed by evil. I was NOT into the occult, but moved into a house previously owned by those that were. I did not know Jesus Christ at the time, nor did I fully believe in the Holy Bible. Our Lord sent a friend into my life to tell me about the awesome power Jesus has over Satan and his demons. She bought me a bible and I began reading it. They attacked me ten times worse! I was terrified. (Satan uses fear to keep you from the truth) Later, my friend handed me Rebecca Brown's book. I sat and cried as I read it. She wrote many many things I was living EVERYDAY! These people that call it fiction, I pray you will never be attacked as I was.....because you will change your attitude. The Lord used this experience not only to show me I was "wrong" in my beliefs, but also to train me how to be a warrior for Christ. Rebecca's attacks during her book were due to training experience, and if you read them all, you will see that she learned well from the Lord. Some comments state she made up things as she went along, and some in the craft state she has it all wrong. The way some occultists practice are different from others. Satan uses a method that will work for you. There are no two people alike. Those that oppose this the most I have to question why? Has she hit on something that woke you up to the truth? Some are saying that the werewolves she talked about are false. How do you know that? I've read many other books by ex-occultists that said werewolves are used for extreme discipline. After what I experienced myself with evil spirits, I will NOT say that Rebecca Brown's book is a fraud. The truth is always attacked by those that are against it. Take the Holy Bible for instance. I used to "attack" it myself....because I was ignorant of the truth and didn't care to find out at that time. The Lord made sure I found out, and let me tell you folks.......Jesus is LORD. Those of you reading this that are in the occult....ask yourself why Jesus is the only one hated by you? Why isn't Mohammed, Buddha, or Krishna hated? Why is Jesus mocked and called the deceiver in hard rock? No other name is mocked by those in the occult. Ironically......that is the very name that can save them from the life of fear. You know longer have to watch your back in fear of those in your own kingdom. The kingdom of Christ is peace, love, and joy. His burden is light, and He became a WILLING sacrifice for you. Do you know anyone else that would do that? I urge others to read Rebecca Brown's book. Through her experiences and the Lord leading her to write it.. ...I was set free from a previous curse that made me think I'd lost my mind. Now I've read hundreds of testimonies like mine. The church is waking up. It's about time.

The Straight up truth will set you free!!!
I found it is the most straight-forward Christian book out today detailing what real satanists are actually involved in. I was ecstatic to find a book that gave the straight up truth about what she and others did to serve satan! With the upcoming of Harry Potter and witch tv shows glamorizing witchcraft and the occult, as a life-long Christian, I've always wondered just what real witches and other devil worshippers actually do and how they encounter the devilor become devil worshippers in the first place. She talks about how children are given to Satan from birth which totally explains child killers (which I also have a scholarly interest in). She discusses things Christians might do in their daily lives that may affect them in the spiritual realm unbeknownst to them. Rebecca also talks about demon possession in detail, and how demons can use a persons body who is very involved in the occult world. I am a criminal justice student who will enter the world of law enforcement soon. I will be encountering people who are under the devil's influence (like in Rebecca's book) on a regular basis and am very happy to have this insight without having to go read an actual devil's handbook to find out where these people come from. The reader can visualize exactly what takes place. I think this book is a wake-up call for all people, especially Christians who don't really pay attention to occultists or think that spiritual warfare is not so serious. It will bring you closer to God as you get a better understanding of how the enemy operates.

Lastly, I just want to say the devil is a liar, and I agree with someones review before mine when they said God (the Holy Spirit) will let you know if what you're reading is false just like when you're listening to a false preacher, and you say to yourself, he is not speaking the word. This author speaks the word in her book in a loving and Godlike manner showing you she is just trying to save and inform the world (like she did the witch in this book). There is an anointing on this literature.

Which Rebecca Brown?
Is this Rebecca Brown the same Rebecca Brown MD that wrote "He Came to Set the Captives Free", "Becoming a Vessel of Honor", and "Unbroken Curses".? It is important for me to have this information. Thank you.

So close - so far
As I began this book, I was enthralled by the writing - moving easily between the real, the fantastic, the medieval, the fairy-world. The Doberman of the title both is and isn't; is frendly, protective, sadistic leading one ever closer to understanding the phobias of the unnamed narrator.

Unfortunately, from my perspective, as the Dobermans take over, the writer (not the narrator) looses control and a novel with great promise goes plop!

I will perhaps try another piece by the author as there was much promise. I understand why some will enjoy (and defend) this book. But with so many books to read and so little time to read them, I can't recommend this.

The Mind Leaps, Growls and Paces
When is a dog not a dog? When it is anything and everything else. In The Dogs, Rebecca Brown uses the totality of dogness--their bodies, habits, history, and varied relationships to human beings--as a literary tool through which to examine the depths of a tormented human mind. What struck me most about this work is that by making the dogs as real or unreal as she wanted, Brown gave herself a huge range in which to explore her subject.

The first chapter of The Dogs is entitled "Dog, in which is illustrated Immanence." Immanence means "having existence only in the mind." At first, this might sound limiting, but with The Dogs, Brown shows us just how vast the mind can be.

A patched-together narrative that needs massive editing
Very disappointing book. This is not "co"-respondence--it's two separate sets of letters that don't speak to each other; thus there's no dialogue. Further, the editor did not do her job of cleaning out the underbrush, so the letters are unflaggingly boring in their ungrammatical microdomesticity. Only now and then is there a flash of insight into the broader historical/sociological picture. This book is merely an assemblage of transcriptions interspersed with short bursts of mostly redundant editorial comment. With maps, historical timelines, sidebars, and incisive editing, this book could have been much more. As it is, it reads and feels like no more than a senior high school term paper. Shame on all concerned.

more photos
this book was very interesting in that one could explore the eIvertyday goings on of a time that we're so far removed from.I would like to have seen many more photos. You can identify much more with the characters in this way. from a historical point of view it was quite enlightening to see how black americans took a hand in their own destiny what with all the odds staked against them. we can see the format that is used even to this day. another interesting point is that there is noting new under the sun. It seems some of the everyday occurencess still prevail today under different circumstances. Though at times the letters were a little boring and written without prpoer punctuation, it helped to bring out the true personality of the writer. All in all for me it was a trip back into time.

Critical glimpse into nineteenth-century black life
Farah Griffin, editor of last year's "A Stranger in the Village: Two Centuries of African-American Travel Writing" has done it again with "Beloved Sisters and Loving Friends." This wonderful collection of letters between Rebecca Primus and Addie Brown allows readers to enter the world of nineteenth-century black American life. Through the correspondence of these "ordinary" women, the reader gains invaluable perspective on the social, political, economic and religious concerns of blacks around the time of the Civil War. In addition, the correspondence between these two loving friends is a welcome addition to all the historical collections of letters, diaries, etc. that document so well the white American experience while neglecting the experiences of black Americans and others. This collection is important and timely and I applaud Professor Griffin's achievement of giving voice to these two women and the world in which they lived.

Well, if it's war you're after.....
.....then don't be at all surprised that when you invoke Jesus against a committed Satanist, he doesn't just fill you full of lead. Unlike vampires, Satanists tend to laugh at crucifixes.

This rather amusing tome is intended to convince the reader that Satan is all-around and trying to get you to stray from the good and righteous path of Christianity. He has several ways of doing this, assuming you have indulged in the various fashionable moral worries that Christians tend to fret over. Things such as yoga or role-playing games. These represent a "door" to Satan apparently, a means whereby he can wrest control of your psyche. This is a rather anaemic view of Satan compared to an author like Grant R Jeffrey who at least credits Satan with the ability and the ambition to attempt to forge a dictatorship here on earth. Rebecca Brown by contrast, takes the Hollywood view of Satan as a being with only the power, ambition and wherewithal to pester little girls. This gives the book an amusing overtone, assuming you can get over your amazement that (a) a grown-up can actually believe this and (b) that same grown-up is an MD.

As someone who has indulged in various of the said activities including having actually read the Satanic Bible then obviously come Judgement Day I'm really for the high jump. I would deny that I am actually possessed by Satan myself, but as the author states "of course, I would deny this". Therefore I am disallowed right of reply since I am non compus mentis.........

A must read for every Christians seeking spiritual growth
If Dr. Brown could rename this book, it would be called "Exposing the Enemy." She exposed the inside of the dark satanic movement, spirit world, the truth about Yoga and how the Surya Namaskar, also called the "Sun Salutation" (which are a series of positions used for warm up exercise which is actually positions of sun god worship!!!). She informed readers about how eastern religious and new age teachings are creeping up in our society. Many Christian are not aware of the spiritual damaging effects of the teachings and practices of eastern religions because of the lack of knowledge of the historical roots. I live in New Orleans, she could write a whole book on Mardi Gras! She discuses the history behind the rosary, something to many seeming very innocent and goes inside the Catholic Church was some eye opening accounts.

The book starts off talking about how her friend Elaine who was trapped in a deep satanic cult and later gave her life to Jesus. She uncovers the dark world of satanism that many people don't believe exist. Through this book I learned how many satanist have infiltrated parts of the governmental system, foster homes, molest, rape and murder innocent children as a part of their black services.

Dr. Brown exposed the enemy and opened my awareness a great deal. I had never hear of "astral projections" and didn't know that these things were mentioned in the Bible. If you haven't, then all the more reason to read the book. Let me not forget to mention that she gives a host of Biblical references. She doesn't try to be all things to all Christians. This is surely her ministry.

A word of caution. I don't believe this book is written for the babes in Christ or the unsaved. Before you read, make sure you are prayed up and ready for possible distractions by the enemy. If you are not open to dig deeper in the things of the Lord, this is not the book for you. If your marriage, children or you have been under attack and you just can't seem to put your fingers on it, this is your book. Not only is Dr. Brown exposing the enemy but she explains in detail how we can fight back and win.

Sequel to He Came To Set The Captives Free
In this sequel, Dr Rebecca Brown shows how the Lord continues to protect her and Elaine after her (Elaine's) final deliverance. She talks about issues that are important to every Christian, such as prayer, hearing God, covenanting with God and having a holy fear of God. Dr Brown also shows, in detail, the various doorways that many people, including Christians, unwittingly open to Satan. She shows conclusively that the "Jesus" worshipped in Roman Catholicism is not the Jesus of the Bible and reveals the origin of several anti-scriptural practices in Catholicism. Dr brown shows the link between New Age and Satanism. Also discussed is the seldom-mentioned topic of the aftercare of Christians after they are delivered from demons. From many of the true case studies mentioned in the book, Dr Brown shows that God deals with each deliverance differently because HE IS GOD and loves His children as individuals. From the case studies, we see that Satan is a liar and is not Almighty like God. Nevertheless, we are not to underestimate him but we are to trust in God's loving care. Read this book and be blessed

I would like to know if this author is the same author who wrote set the captives free, unbroken curses, vessels of honor!!
it is soooooooo important to me please let me know.

Ethereal beauty
Rebecca brown's main talent in her writing is being able to portray a feeling of intimacy and love between two people that everyone can relate to. Although the author is in fact a lesbian, you are not able to tell in her stories, because gender does not become an issue. Her use of pronouns and usage is so simple and straight-forward that you find yourself thinking of your own lover in her terms-whether they are same sex or not. Annie Oakley's Girl gives a glance into this emotionally complex and beautiful world that she is able to weave. From selfish lovers to being haunted by something or someone none of us can seem to find, her stories will stay with you and teach you something as well. It gives both sides of the spectrum: the simple and the twisted versions of what love can become. I was spellbound and speechless when I was done. I recommend it to everyone. Her point of view is something we should all recognize at least once. (and this is a great place to start)

Controversial Enlightenment
If you are a Rebecca Brown reader, this is a must for you. I believe this book ranks third best out of her four books ("He Came to Set the Captives Free" is of course, number one, followed by "Prepare for War"). This is the third book in the series. It is written better than "Prepare for War", her second book, but I do not find it as informative.

"Becoming a Vessel of Honor in the Master's Service" focuses primarily on deliverance. If you do not agree with her theology, this book is not for you. I, myself, read her books to learn about the Devil and what he is doing against the church. This book shows you primarily how to protect yourself and go against his attacks. I find this book to be controversial.
