A "must-read" reference for financing your business.
Do you have an idea ready for the marketplace? Are you eager to be a successful entrepreneur? If so, you will need money to turn your dreams into a reality. Luckily, the answers are close at hand. Robert Brown, Ph.D., an attorney, MBA and law instructor who, for over 25 years, has specialized in guiding developing companies to success, authored "2000 Financing Business Start-Ups: How to Raise Money for Emerging Companies." He and his co-author, Alan Gutterman, Ph.D., have written a highly readable and immediately useful book, offering clear and concise descriptions of all aspects of the fundraising process.

Drs. Brown and Gutterman describe the many funding sources available including: your own funds, family, friends, banks, equipment lessors, government agencies, angels, venture capitalists and, ultimately, the public markets. This book walks you carefully and comprehensively through the process of how to access each of these options.

Of immense value are appendices which include a sample business plan, term sheet, due diligence request and other important documents, forms and checklists along with extensive lists of both venture capital funding sources and bank funding sources. A CD-ROM containing all appendices is packaged with the book, allowing readers to easily personalize these forms and documents.

"2000 Financing Business Start-Ups" helps you avoid the pitfalls that many companies make in their early days which end up limiting their going public in the future. Throughout the text are compelling vignettes by CEOs, CFOs, venture capitalists and others who share their experiences about financing start-ups. In addition to the expert guidance from the authors, these stories amplify the main points of the chapters and add an authentic and personable quality to the content.

Thankfully, and as happens on only rare occasions with business and finance books, the writing is wonderfully clear and easy-to-follow. Drs. Brown and Gutterman use down-to-earth language and address this complex topic with ease and comfort. This book is a "must-read" and will serve as an important and often-used reference for years to come.

A Must for every sailor's bookshelf
In-depth, even includes boat care and tuning. But the part of the book that struck me the most was chapter entitled 'What Makes a Sailboat Go' which included demonstrations helping to explain how a sailboat moves in the wind.

Italian Painters of the Renaissance
Published in Hardcover by Ursus Pr (1998)
Authors: Bernard Berenson and David Alan Brown
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $31.76

Average review score:

Classic, still-important, highly readable
Berenson's classic study of Italian Renaissance painters is well worth seeking in used bookstores or through book-finding services. This collection of essays separately published between 1894 and 1907 focuses on the painters of Venice, Florence, central Italy, and north Italy. In intelligent, lively prose, the author not only analyzes the merit of scores of individual painters from Giotto to Correggio but also traces the development of Italian painting and constantly reiterates his theory that the "life enhancement" qualities of of high art are found in the areas of tactile values, movement, and spatial composition, all of which he explains in articulate detail. Movement and energy, for example, can be expressed in an arm leaning on a pillow. He correctly identifies the partnership in Florence between an intense desire for knowledge that helps to explain and control the world and the "discovery" of classical forms from ancient Rome. In painting, this led above all to a focus on the human figure (which Berenson claims as the ultimate subject of art) and a preeminent dedication to line. The intellectual rigor of Florence contrasted with Venice, the voluptuous capital of a wealthy mercantile empire distinguished by public rituals, where spectacle and color were the chief aims of art. Berenson's authority ranges through landscape, the uses of antiquity, Illustration and Decoration, prettiness versus beauty, and archaic art, whose appeal lies in its search for form and movement. The book is sparsely illustrated, so you will have to supplement it with your own visual sources, but it's a goldmine of information, useful perspectives, and thought-provoking opinions.

Bedtime Favourite
After being asked to read this for the third night in a row by my 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son, I thought, well if they love it, other kids will too. The kids seem to get caught up in the imagery of galloping around a toy shop on the back of a rocking horse. It's a great bedtime storybook, both in length and content.

A Watershed Book for Researchers in Psychiatry
For many years, a book for researchers such as this has needed to have been written. The highly regarded authors have opened a door for psychiatry and neurology that hopefully will never be closed. The prenatal influences that contribute to schizophrenia have needed to be examined one by one. Patients and families want researchers to deal with these serious issues in an effort to prevent future tragedies.

An Invaluable Book for Prescribers and Users of Medications
This often ignored problem is sensibly discussed in this excellent reference book, which was recommended to me by the senior pharmacist in a leading UK psychiatric hospital. The clear and honest approach to a difficult subject, makes an invaluable contribution to help physicians, nurses and users. I believe that every university and reference library, hospital and medical practitioner should obtain a copy. Top marks for including a CD Rom too. from the founder of 'APRIL' (Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link) email address : info@april.org.uk

Ghost Stories Galore
Shadows and Cypress: Southern Ghost Stories is the best collection of ghost stories I've seen. Many have been gathered from the old WPA collections, and many have been collected in the oral tradition. Dr. Brown is an expert on the classification of folk lore. His expertise in this area is evident. The collection includes selections suitable for use by all ages.

Alan Holman has done it again. I love his work. He has written of a spectacular journey which he went on. My first name is also Alan, and my last Holman, but I insist that I'm not the author. You'll love the book just as much as I did. It's often hilarious.

Classic Space Opera
I first read this book many years ago as a teenager (was it Asimov who said the Golden Age of Science Fiction is thirteen?), and have read it again several times since then. It's even better with age. It's a classic, unapologetically politically-incorrect tale of a human child who claws his way to the top in a universe after the downfall of the Terran Empire. If you like classic Heinlein (not the bizarre self-indulgent stuff he cranked out in his last years), you'll love this book.

A Book for a Lifetime
Like other reviewers, I first read this book in my teens in the late 60's. It immediately clicked with me and I've reread the book at least once every five years since.

We don't know what's happened to humanity, but its legacy is a proud one. And embryos with human genes are prized above all others. Roan is 'purchased' as an embryo, brought to term and raised by his adopted parents, and spends his life seeking his roots. His trials and adventures appeal to teenagers and teenagers-at-heart with questions of 'Who am I?', 'Where did I come from?', 'Why am I different from everyone else?', 'What makes me unique?'.

Roan's parents bankrupt themselves for the opportunity to purchase a son that may actually be human. As a boy living a poor, integrated neighborhood (with all forms of aliens), Roan experiences poverty, prejudice, fear, and dreams for a better life. A traveling, galactic circus gives Roan a chance to experience a new life, where friendship, love, loyalty, and competition give him a chance to develop and forge new relationships while exploring the possibilities of his heritage.

After a pirate attack on the circus, Roan learns to exercise some control over his environment and to become a leader. Roan ultimately traces his lineage back to Terra, where he acts to replace the decadent descendents of humanity with a race that will one day reclaim its place in determining the destiny of the galaxy.

A book that keeps finding its way back into my Life
A top notch story that should be made into a movie. If done right it could easily be a box office hit and make millions! Any good screen play writers out there looking for work?

I first read "Earthblood" in college back in the late 60's, I had borrowed it from a friend. A few years later, I was looking to get a copy for myself but it was out of print! Then, years later, while walking by a Library sale of old books I came across a hard copy edition of it and purchased it for $.25! This is a book that should always be around for teenagers to read and love. Let it stay in print forever!
