A Must for every sailor's bookshelf
In-depth, even includes boat care and tuning. But the part of the book that struck me the most was chapter entitled 'What Makes a Sailboat Go' which included demonstrations helping to explain how a sailboat moves in the wind.

Classic, still-important, highly readable
Berenson's classic study of Italian Renaissance painters is well worth seeking in used bookstores or through book-finding services. This collection of essays separately published between 1894 and 1907 focuses on the painters of Venice, Florence, central Italy, and north Italy. In intelligent, lively prose, the author not only analyzes the merit of scores of individual painters from Giotto to Correggio but also traces the development of Italian painting and constantly reiterates his theory that the "life enhancement" qualities of of high art are found in the areas of tactile values, movement, and spatial composition, all of which he explains in articulate detail. Movement and energy, for example, can be expressed in an arm leaning on a pillow. He correctly identifies the partnership in Florence between an intense desire for knowledge that helps to explain and control the world and the "discovery" of classical forms from ancient Rome. In painting, this led above all to a focus on the human figure (which Berenson claims as the ultimate subject of art) and a preeminent dedication to line. The intellectual rigor of Florence contrasted with Venice, the voluptuous capital of a wealthy mercantile empire distinguished by public rituals, where spectacle and color were the chief aims of art. Berenson's authority ranges through landscape, the uses of antiquity, Illustration and Decoration, prettiness versus beauty, and archaic art, whose appeal lies in its search for form and movement. The book is sparsely illustrated, so you will have to supplement it with your own visual sources, but it's a goldmine of information, useful perspectives, and thought-provoking opinions.

Bedtime Favourite
After being asked to read this for the third night in a row by my 5 year old daughter and 3 year old son, I thought, well if they love it, other kids will too. The kids seem to get caught up in the imagery of galloping around a toy shop on the back of a rocking horse. It's a great bedtime storybook, both in length and content.

A Watershed Book for Researchers in Psychiatry
For many years, a book for researchers such as this has needed to have been written. The highly regarded authors have opened a door for psychiatry and neurology that hopefully will never be closed. The prenatal influences that contribute to schizophrenia have needed to be examined one by one. Patients and families want researchers to deal with these serious issues in an effort to prevent future tragedies.

An Invaluable Book for Prescribers and Users of Medications
This often ignored problem is sensibly discussed in this excellent reference book, which was recommended to me by the senior pharmacist in a leading UK psychiatric hospital. The clear and honest approach to a difficult subject, makes an invaluable contribution to help physicians, nurses and users. I believe that every university and reference library, hospital and medical practitioner should obtain a copy. Top marks for including a CD Rom too. from the founder of 'APRIL' (Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link) email address : info@april.org.uk

Ghost Stories Galore
Shadows and Cypress: Southern Ghost Stories is the best collection of ghost stories I've seen. Many have been gathered from the old WPA collections, and many have been collected in the oral tradition. Dr. Brown is an expert on the classification of folk lore. His expertise in this area is evident. The collection includes selections suitable for use by all ages.

Great piece of literature.
Alan Holman has done it again. I love his work. He has written of a spectacular journey which he went on. My first name is also Alan, and my last Holman, but I insist that I'm not the author. You'll love the book just as much as I did. It's often hilarious.
