wonderful-- a must read
A nuanced and finely wrought novel. Some of the lousy reviews seem to have been written by resentful former students who probably flunked one of Brooks' Yale classes long ago-- potential readers shouldn't be deterred by such ad hominem nonsense. This is well-plotted and thoughtful, if occasionally a bit flat. For the most part, a first-rate read, erudite and entertaining.

great! adventure, romance, and philosophy
I loved this book: Peter Brooks is a fluent writer and the plot keeps the reader's interest throughout. The hero, Charles, is winningly naive; the narrative irony gentle (occasionally too gentle). Brooks' literary criticism made me expect an excellent novel, and I was not disappointed. Bravo, and I look forward to more fiction from Brooks.

A marvellous historical novel
I loved this novel. I have always fantasized about life in unspoilt Tahiti--a way of life the author describes beautifully. This novel is really well-written and a joy to read.

Walden
I truly enjoyed this read. It may help to listen to the audio cassette beforehand. I find Thoreau inspirational. Many times you step back and realize how beautiful all of life's intricacies are, how wonderful life truly is & how lucky we are. Thoreau has embraced every minute detail of natural life, as it was meant to be & has successfully captured it in print. I love the fact that each line is a "novel" in itself. I loved the book and listen to the audio cassette often. Buy it, buy it, buy it.

Don't listen to the illiterate juveniles...
They can't appreciate this book due to the fact that they live in a world of pop trash. Im only 19 and I like it, it's one of the best books I've ever read (besides Waterland). No author describes images and scenery as well as Thoreau, at least that I've read, and his dislike for society is well argued. So, if you're one of those MTV-watching, mall loving, stylish-car- driving, conforming, TV junkies, or an educated uppity know-it-all than this book isn't for you.

The seductiveness of simplicity
I read this book about every five years or so in
order to take inventory of my personal life. Soon
I find myself forgetting about DVD players and software
applications and begin to focus upon bringing
my life much more in tune with the harmonics of
nature. Thoreau has the ability to cut through the
messages of nonstop consummerism and force the reader to
evaluate the cutural norms of greed and individualism.
Why is it so hard to accept that man is of this planet
and we must learn how to balance our species goals and
desires with those of the other species of life which
inhabit this biosphere?

Incorrect review
The reviewer from Chicago has mistaken this book for another one. The author of this book is not Thomas A. Heinz. Mr. Heinz's books are of exceptionally high quality. This book as well as the Visual Encyclopedia authored by Mr. Thompson does contain a number of mis-identifications and an upside down picture of the Hollyhock House ornamentation.

stone, brick, wood, and 100% genius
This marvelous book is in 3 languages, English, German and French, in tandem, on each page. Printed on thick, glossy stock by Taschen, it is well written by Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer in a clear and graceful style, and expertly edited by Peter Gossel and Gabriele Leuthauser. The contents are as follows:
Part One: "Essay"; this is the section where most of the text is, and consists of these topics: Background, The Prairie Houses, The Space Within, Materials, Nature, The Flow of the Work, and Human Values.
Part Two is "Selected Buildings and Projects".
The final pages are devoted to a chronological biography and list of executed works.

Mr. Pfeiffer writes that "His eloquence in the manner in which he wrote and spoke of nature is surpassed only by the buildings he set on the earth" (pg. 28). The way his work is an integral part of its surroundings is pure genius. The photograph on page 118 of the famous Fallingwater House, with the waterfall seeming to come from the structure is a perfect example of this.
The architect is quoted as saying "Nature is all the body of God we will ever know" (pg.26), and his creations reflect this reverence for the landscape.

Part Two is profusely illustrated in black and white and color, with only explanatory text. As magnificent as these photographs are, what I find the most thrilling are the drawings. They are reproduced in color, many are yellowed, torn and with little adhesive tape marks, but are of astounding beauty, and a glimpse into the mind of this unique and brilliant man.

Mr. Pfeiffer became Frank Lloyd Wright's student in the Taliesin Fellowship, and is the director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives in Scottsdale, Arizona. This is one of numerous books he has written on Wright's life and work, and it is a fitting tribute to one of America's creative giants.

The First of the Best
There are some of the best of the photos of Wright's work in this book, After seeing this work, Edgar Kaufmann, jr. hired Heinz to take the photos for his Fallingwater coffee table book.

Aparently the Reader from California has copied this review on to several of Mr. Heinz's book pages. This review does not seem to be appropriate to this book. This can easily be determined by simply looking at the three wonderful photos of the Hollyhock house. None of them are upside down. None of the 100 photos are mis-identified. These are wonderful photographs and this may be the first of Mr. Heinz's 20 some books, all are delight to have and look through.

Mr. Heinz, we want more of your work, keep at it.

Not the best review on the Bismarck Class.
This book adds very little by way of new knowledge to the existing information that is available on the Bismarck Class in a variety of other texts. The fine photographs are the text's main plus, although the diagrams and internal schematics are too small to be of much use. The design criteria and historical context discussion, what little there is, reflects some degree of revisionism via its use of often observed critisms of the Bismarck Class' design vs those used by other powers during WWII. Nonetheless, this discussion is not well detailed with regard to a host of specifics, most notably a detailed review of the ship's immune zones vs certain shells at specified ranges. All and all, some fine photography, but very little new information.

Pictorial History
Great historical value, but I must admit for the price I expected far more detail. It does have a good set of reference photos, particularly for the historian and modeller, as the Prinz Eugen had somewhat of a distinguished career being a partner to the Bismarck and a A-bomb Test bed for the USA. It does lack good line drawings and interior detail for the Class which I would expect for the price.

A spotty yet suitable addition to a director's library
As a young director, I found this to be a fairly dissapointing book, but nonetheless worthwhile due to its inclusion of many powerful British directors. The interviews are spotty at best -- it is clear that a questionnaire was circulated and then followed up. There also is very little insight given to the working processes of each director interviewed. One to have if you must know about Phyllida Lloyd and Annie Castledine, but I would recommend Arthur Bartow's book "Director's Voice" any day over this one.

Insightful and an easy read.
There is probably no better way to learn how to be a good director than to study good directors. This book is filled with anecdotes and advice from several of the best directors of stage and screen working in the world today. Peter Brook is featured as an author. His previous books, including "The Open Door" and "The Empty Space" are treasures in theatrical theory, and his experience as a founding director of the Royal Shakespaere Company in England puts him as one of the most accomplished directors to learn from. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to pick the brain of great directors in theatre and film.

Basic Electronic Theory Book That Reads Like a Law Book
This book is manual of approximately 350 pages. Written in 1982 and reads like it. This was written for techs but seems aimed at engineers. The material is very hard to follow and very dry reading. It's not at all clear on Network theorem and Laws with some errors. The math examples are very difficult to follow and doesn't explain the process and mostly uses symbols and not actual numbers in the examples. No explainations for how they derived Norton and Thevenin equvalent circuits for FETs and Bipolar transistors. Explaination of load lines and digital sections are good. There are some pictures and charts to go with the paragraphs but the math examples are in need of some work. Recommend getting a good electronic math book as a companion to get by. The math book I used is list in recommendations. I have a good background in electronics and got this book as a review and though there's information to be learned here it's diffcult to understand.
