AFTER PRIMITIVISM, BOYHOOD
The never has been, probably never will be, a finer, more stimulating utopian than Paul Gauguin. Unquestionably his life was a mess, but he was driven by angels, and transcendence, if not divinity, flickers from the pages of his journals as much as his paintings. Much revisionist bunk has been written about his modus, but Gauguin was an unashamed romantic - profoundly selfish, yes, but such is the call of the muse - and motivated solely by the drive to destroy hypocrisy and reinvent painting. He had the appetites of a satyr, and, while it lasted (and it lasted 20 years, while Van Gogh burned out in ten), a comparable animal energy. This slim book sums up his philosophy in aphorisms and boozy yarns and is the most elevating distraction for any grey day. It is crammed with jokes and visions, and has the feel of a roller-coaster - soaring from diatribes against corrupt Christian missionaries to the joy of unbridled sex in the sun, from the sanctity of humble animals to the prize of Confucius. Gauguin's son Emil edited this volume for publication in 1921 and insists that it is the true voice of his father, as opposed to the watered-down "Noa Noa" which, in its Dover edition, a reprint of the 1919, is equally interesting, if a little stilted. The bottom line, of course, is that Cezanne, Seurat, Van Gogh and Gauguin invented modern painting and all paid a huge personal price for their pursuit of the new way forward. All suffered great anguish, but none retained the buoyant irreverence of boyhood that twinkles in all of Gauguin. Read this, and see the difference.

An excellent introduction to a new field
What is geocomputation ? To some, a revolutionary way of dealing with spatial data. To others, a collection of known tools under a new brand name. In any case, all of those which are interested in geographical information systems (GIS) will benefit enormously from reading this book, which provides a comprehensive review of this new field. All articles are interesting, but especially noteworthy is Couclelis's state-of-the-art review, with a number of interesting points about the notion of "geocomputation". Important contributions also come from Oppenshaw (he reviews his GAM and GAM/K algorithms), Anselin (exploratory data analysis), Batty (visualisation) and Burrough (dynamical modelling). In short, if you want to know what "geocomputation" is about, this is the place to start.

Visit the year 1846 from the safety of your armchair
It's 1846 and you find yourself in Concord, Massachusetts. Who's there? And what's it like to live there? Those questions and more are answered by Paul Brooks in this fine book. He uses a humanities approach to uncover the history of culture, politics, education, literacy, and women's lives in this one particular area of New England. And you won't run into just the usual familiar families -- the Emersons, Hawthornes, Thoreaus, and Alcotts -- but will learn of other folks of Concord as well: farmer George Minott, lawyer Samuel Hoar, doctor Josiah Bartlett, and constable Sam Staples, to name a few. One chapter is devoted entirely to the operation of Brook Farm, a utopian community founded by Dr. George Ripley that was beginning to struggle by the year in question. Photos of key people and period illustrations augment the very readable text. If you like pre-Civil War American history or are enamored with any of the authors mentioned above, pick this title up at the nearest used bookstore. You won't be disappointed.

Stunning black and white masterpiece
Published in 1979, Yosemite and the Range of Light is 116 impressive prints demonstrating the mastery of Ansel Adams. The book contains poster classics like "Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite Valley, 1944, Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, 1960, and Winter Sunrise, Sierra Nevada, from Lone Pine, 1944." Non students of Mr. Adams will discover many "unseen" photographs that are beautiful in their own right but did not have the mass-market appeal of his classics. Too valuable to be a coffee table book, this collection is the archetype for fine art books. My copy is a family treasure.

nice
I have bought the special edition using autocad2000 to help me with a course I am taking at college. I had my teacher take a gander and he said that it was a good book but thought that it could elaborate a little more. The idea of spending some time explaining about drafting was a very nice touch though. philiperochon@aol.com
A must-have for long-time AutoCAD users!
A must-have for long-time AutoCAD users who want to quickly implement AutoCAD 2000- and 2000i-based products. The beauty of this book is its focus on effectively using AutoCAD to solve business problems. A great supplement to the out-of-box documentation from Autodesk.

A novel view of Paul!
Very interesting work focusing on the cultural background to the Pauline era. It investigates some new angles and approaches to the traditional stance often employed by New Testament scholars, thus envoking original and valid arguments based around Paul.
