The lovely illustrations bring children into the warm and reassuring world of this sweet and gentle story. Everyone would want a wonderful babysitter like Mrs. Duck. Text and pictures bring out the best in each other. The illustrations have exquisite detail--the pictures on the walls, the toys on the shelves--that make the book a delight to return to again and again.

This is the third book of Bear's adventures. The illustrations of Patience Brewster are a perfect match to Winthop's story. Bear is a charmer; he becomes big brother to a huge panda bear: Roly-Poly. We could only wish there were more books about Bear.

Bear's playing hide'n'seek. He hides in the closet with the Christmas presents. Should he take a little peek? Bear is wonderful. The illustrations are more than perfect. I love Bear.

This book was a nice surprise. I had never heard of it before. It has lots of great action words in it that kids find exciting. It is easy for an adult to get lively when reading it because of the author's choice of words. I highly recommend it!

I purchased this book for my 8.5 year old daughter who has enjoyed cooking at my side and has an interest in learning to cook. This cookbook provides a wonderful introduction to the world of culinary arts, beginning with an understanding of basic food ingredients, cooking and baking tools and terms and continues with advise on safety and menu planning.

The level is probably best suited to children from 10 - 14, however, with some guidance and supervision my 8 year old can prepare most of the recipes.

Recipes include all the basics from Vegetable soup to Chili to Banana Nut Bread, Brownies, Pies and Punch. All recipes inlcude an equipment list along with the ingredient list and clear, easy to follow step-by-step instructions with important safety tips like "wearing oven mits, remove the cookie sheet from the oven."

We've tried several of the recipes and have not been disappointed. This junior version of the classic compares well. I expect that my daughter will one day take this cookbook off to college.

I think I would give this wonderful picture book five stars even if the text was tripe because the illustrations are so lovely but fortunately the text is equally good. Two fisherman brothers, one an idealistic dreamer and the other a materialistic schemer accidentally pull up a baby mermaid in their nets along with their catch of fish. Both brothers see dollar signs, one hoping for riches and fame, the other wishing for a carefree life of exploration and discovery. They decide to sell her as a curiosity and make their fortune. The dreamy brother falls in love with the adorable merbaby and his conscience won't let him sell her into a miserable life on land. In the end kindness is rewarded. The story also reveals an age old enmity between the sea folk and the land folk because of the way land folk plunder and abuse the gifts of the sea. It has a good message about ecology and respect for other beings rather than dominance and destruction. The large double spread illustrations have an atmospheric sea-green wash and are as sure to enchant as a mermaid's voice.

I find it hard to believe two things -- one, that Patience Brewster has never won a Caldecott, and two that so many of the books that she has illustrated are out of print.
We've missed the boat! The illustrations in this book are simply magical. What fun to have a new fairytale!

It could be a true book for every child who saw a litter of puppies. We recently had labrador puppies and my 2 young boys said EVERYTHING in this book. It was good to read the book to them so they could understand why there were just TOO MANY PUPPIES! Well done.

This is a fun read-a-long book that your child will quickly memorize and want to read with you. It's full of fun pictures and animal sounds for you to make. My four year old grandsons favorite is when the cow says "Moo Hoo" to the moon. Your child will love it and so will you. I have to read it again and again for Josh.

This is hardly a sexist story. Lally draws real life comparisons from the hard facinating real world of bees. Females run the hives,Queens rule, drones serve one purpose. The beauty in this book is the identification with misfits in a fixed society. Social structure, politics, nature,love,friendship,and poetry are delicately examined with a beautiful lesson on what we can and cannot control in an imperfect world.I loved it.Read it again.

I just finished A Hive for the Honeybee during my lunch hour and couldn't wait to encourage both adults and teens to read it. There are rich poetic levels here - a simple story about the life of a worker bee which is a pleasure in and of itself - but this honey-sweet story masks a haunting, unflinching yet not heavy-handed look at stereotypes and society. I imagine teens who've lived through both Animal Farm and Antz will love it.
I cried a bucket over bees!
Now I have to pull myself together and get back on the reference desk!

This book brought you to the depths of human feeling and emotion, ranging from the indignantly annoying drones and male bees, from the sweet pining of Alfred for the Queen, to Mo finding the meaning of life. The book was a child's tale to be sure, but at my age, far more than a child, i immidiately fell into the world of buzzing and honey-fanning, necter gathering and hive gaurding. I cried at the end, very much.
