Easy reading for a dry subject.
I love reading about Southerners during the Civil War and their lifestyles and this book filled a void. I was afraid it would be really hard to read and very clinical but Ms. Massey made the subject entertaining as well as enlightening. She has a great style for a history and social studies writer.

Fun parent and child book.
We had some great laughs reading this book with our 7 year old son Joël. He immediately identified with Julia and as parents we saw quite a bit of Julia in him. We have a baby as well so Joël laughed out loud as we read Julia's attempts at bossing her baby brother around. This is a fun, well written and illustrated book that is sure to bring warm chuckles to parents and great laughs to children. Although it does so in a 'fun' way, this delightful book nurtures mutual understanding between parent and child and sheds a playful light on the frustration little children feel with "being bossed around by everyone." It's as much a 'parenting' book as it is a fun child's story.

Wolfe's editor & biographer exchange insights, memories
This is a collection of ten-years worth of letters that illuminate the amazing loyalty of Wolfe's editor Edward Aswell and biographer & literary agent Elizabeth Nowell. Though book sounds academic, letters give a lively, personal, very human look at the two writers & at Wolfe & his family, including some never-before-published information. Both Aswell & Nowell died in 1958 within months of Nowell's completion of biography. Book edited by their daughters.

Native Planters
4 stars because only God gets 5 stars. This is the quintessential reference for native Hawaiian history, ethnobotany, culture, language, and lifestyle. It doesn't just cover what is what. It covers the who, what, when, where, why, and how. The depth of the coverage goes all the way to the migration routes. Unfortunately, a hard-back edition was never made. The book is worth every penny and is guaranteed to go up in value - CK

A Great Book
One cannot fully study Elizabeth I without encountering the issues of ceremony and progress. Cole does a wonderful job of exploring the issues and reasons behind Elizabeth's progresses, and why they were crucial to her reign. I highly recomend the book for all interested in the subject, and for any history student.

A Compelling Book About Victorian England
The book Preaching Pity : Dickens, Gaskell, and Sentimentalism in Victorian Culture (Studies in Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Vol. 11), by Mary Lenard provided an insightful analyzation of the birth of public feeling in the Victorian Era. She uses the works of Dickens and Gaskell to prove her points, which she does quite well. Her book demostrated a deep knowledge of England during that time period. It gave the reader a feelinig of involement in the book and the historical happenings noted. Although the subject matter is a bit dry, she managed to make it interesting. This book is a must have for researchers and historical buffs alike!

A fun way to practice English
I've used this book to liven up false beginers to intermediate ESL classes. The repetitve structures offer plenty of practice on grammar structures, but put them in context with a story; the students don't even realize that they are studying grammar. It's not sufficient as the sole text in a course, but is an excellent companion to any English textbook.
