Only superlatives can do justice to this book.
Everything about "Dawn of the Floating World: Early Ukiyoe Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts" is superb: the quality of the unglazed paper, the beautiful design and color reproductions, and the solid scholarship that accompanies the presentation of rare Japanese prints from the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

If you are a collector or student of Edo-period Japanese prints, you undoubtedly have dozens if not hundreds of books in your art library, but few will match the quality of this volume or give you access to such a rich lode of information on the earliest of the Japanese printmakers (1650-1765). Nor will many other books stand up to the quality of the text provided by an all-star team drawn from the British Museum, Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, and Dartmouth College. The text entries present: poems in romanized Japanese as well as English translation, aesthetic assessments of the prints, biographical information on artists, interpretations of symbolic devices, and details--where relevant--of the kabuki plays, actors, locations, and activities depicted. Even the footnotes, printed at the inner margins of the pages devoted to text, are fascinating and will help intellectually curious readers to readily locate the best of source material.

One of the best novels about adolescence ever
I devoured this book when it came out in 1975, and it still holds up: Anyone who was ever a teenage girl, who loves to read about New York or Boston, or the late 1940s. Anne Bernays is a master prose stylist, and this is still my favorite of her books.

Excellant addition to the American Sisters series.
Twelve-year-old twins Hester and Philena, indentured servants to Madame Sarah Kemble Knight in her Boston home, have no memory of their parents. Yet their predictable life, the only one they know, is about to change. Madame Knight receives a letter summoning her to New Haven. She decides to bring her fifteen-year-old daughter, Polly, along, as well as Hester. But a devastated Philena is forced to stay behind, to care for Madame Knight's mother, Goodwife Kemble. However, Goodwife Kemble sends Philena and the family's Indian slave, Cato, after Madame Knight, to give her something she forgot to bring along. Before the two can catch up to the travelers, Cato runs away to freedom, abandoning Philena in the wilderness. She must travel on, completely on her own. Even when she finally catches up to Madame Knight, Polly, and Hester, things don't get much easier. The four travelers face every danger imaginable on the difficult journey by horseback along the Boston Post Road, but Hester and Philena discover things about themselves and each other that they never knew, and find their own hidden strength and courage. I highly reccomend this book, and the entire series, to girls who enjoy historical fiction.

Perfect
An excellent help to me and my family. I actually chanced upon this book in Borders, only after 2 months of relocating to Boston from Asia.
Nevertheless, it explains everything in depth and the resources mentioned were updated and exact. 2 years now and I still remember that this is the book that help me settled in and the authors experiences were my exact feelings if I were to write a book myself.

This book has stayed with me for a long time . . .
I just reread Sideshow and it affected me more than ever. The way that Anne LeClaire intertwines the past and the present is haunting, a little bit disturbing and ultimately very very satisfying. Not only do I recommend that you read it--I recommend that you hang on to this book and read it again and pass it on. I hope this author writes another book soon!

Mickey, the Boston Terrier, writes delightful limericks.
"A Boston's World" is a charming and entertaining view of the world through limericks written by Mickey, a Boston Terrier. The witty and heart- warming verses about the everyday life of Mickey and his adopted sister, Winnie, are sure to delight dog lovers of all ages. The book is beautifully illustrated with color photographs on every page making it especially appealing to children. One word of warning - after reading this delightful book, you'll want a Boston of your own!

A book about "dogs" for dog owners.
Mickey's outllook gives any dog owner a view of life coming from a different angle - truly looking at life from a dog's view makes us think differently about our two-legged friends. "The more we see of people the more we love our dogs." They have a much better attitude about life and Mickey is the BEST!

A wonderful chronicle about a wonderful breed's life!
Mickey Nock and his companion Winnie show the world what a wonderful breed they represent. As a former owner of a Boston, this book and it's excellent photos brought back wonderful memories of the intelligence and charm of this fiesty branch of canines. A dog's perspective is a good check on our human assumptions, and helps us remember to focus on the moment and the little things that make life wonderful: friends, games, naps, and snacks. Thanks for sharing that with us and the human contacts, too, in the Eastern Shore life of this charming duo.

A wonderfull look at Monet
I found this book not only to be filled with the wonderfull works of Claude Monete but it also has a great insight to his life and the imprssion he left on modern art today. This book also contains full fold-out pictures of some of the artists best works. For anyone who has ever enjoyed any of Monets work you will love this book.

A must, for anyone looking to expand an art library!
This book is a perfect addition to any art library. Having seen "Monet in the 20th Century" in Boston at the Museum of Fine Arts, I was well prepared for the exhibit by having read the book first. I found the exhibit to be an extraordinary example of Monet's achievment in his later years. This book focuses on the works of Monet starting at the start of this century right up to his death in 1928. All through this period of Monet's life and including the representation of the body of work produced within those years, this book never skips a beat. Although not an all-encompassing look at his complete works of that period, this book offers the best look out there of his paintings as well as his development throughout the last quarter-century of his life. I found it to be in keeping with what is already known about Monet's later years, but certainly not devoid of interesting insights. The quality of the book, it's contents, including all of the color plates reproduced within is very good. I would not have an art library without Monet representation, and this is the ideal book for an addition or a starter.

The Thinking Cat's Guide to the Millennium

a wry's cat's take on we poor humans' little worries.
ringer mcgee is a welcome voice of sanity in a world sated with talk show blah blah and infomercials telling us how everything works. his insights into our little insecurities that we blow way the heck outta proportion, our high culture, and our low, are a hysterical reality check as we stare into the face of the big two oh oh oh. this book is for the thinking cat lover, as well as the other unenlightened can-openers of the world. and the illustrations of ringer, as well as those of his friends, are just what i pictured in my mind, only a whole lot funnier. his is a face that cannot be lied to, and cannot be snowed or swayed (even with table snacks). and you know he's going to give you his full two cents' worth. my question is: can ringer run for office?

International Newcomer's Guide to Boston

I've tried it and it works!
Having lived in four countries now I found this book to be very helpful. It avoided the US tendency towards far too much information which shows great discipline by the authors in achieving this as the needs of the newly arrived vary tremendously, and it is a large US city.

It is a handy companion size and is easily referred to giving need to know information which is a brilliant support tool in the early stages of a move. It delivered what I expected and was really the lynchpin of a successful, happy move here to Boston.

International Newcomer's get help!
When we moved to the States we found this book practical and informative in it's content. The fact that quotes were used from other expats made you feel "yes, other people have done this, met the same seemingly trivial difficulties and survived" . It was not overwhelming in the information it gave and pointed you in the right direction if you needed to find out more.

An Essential Resource
I am not an international newcomer. I recently moved to Boston from Seattle to attend graduate school. Nevertheless, "International Newcomer's Guide to Boston" by Karen Rudick, Anne Copeland and Helenann Wright provided both the practical and the essential information that any newcomer to the Boston area would require.

The book is brimming with the answers to those common sense questions that newcomers almost always have. Topics include driving a car in Boston, accessing utilities and Boston's weather. For international newcomers, this book is a comprehensive orientation to living in the United States, in addition to the insightful Boston area information.

In sum, this is a practical guide that is written in clear, concise language and is a "must-buy" for anyone arriving in Boston from other countries or distant regions in the United States.
