A very comprehensive introduction to muslim architecture
I love this book. It gives you a very good insight to muslim architecture and is at the same time easy to read and entertaining. As an orientalist in a postgrad study program I got to read books on the subject that are much more confusing or that are written in a slightly boring style. This book is a thorough introduction that never just stays on the surface of the matter. It does not give you a chronological account of architecture history, but answers a lot of questions like "Why it was built like it was built?" In the back part of the book you find plans and short descriptions of the most important buildings, in the first part you find a lot of good photographs and even better articles on single subjects like materials or building techniques. But the most important thing: It's NEVER boring.

It Should Not Have Happened Here!
I own two copies of this important book. One to loan out to friends who believe that such a thing could not happen here in the United States, and, another copy to keep safely tucked away in my personal library.

If the victims of this "Medical Experiment" had been Jewish and the perpetrators had been German, the entire workforce of the US Public Health Service would be tracked down and suitably punished for their "Crimes Against Humanity". Sound like a sily analogy? The Nazi's came to power in 1932, the same year this experiment was begun by the US National Health Service. The Nazi's were defeated in 1945, whereas, this experiment really did not end until the 1970's! Each year, the US government spends millions of Tax Payer dollars to track down ex-Nazi's for crimes committed in a foreign country while the National Health Service retiree's collect Tax Payer dollars in the form of pensions even though they denied proper medical treatment for US citizens!

Now, there is AIDS. People with African ancestory are genetically far more succeptable to AIDS than any one else. After reading this book, one wonders.....

Readable bio of an unusual general.
"Black Jack" Logan was perhaps the best of the "political" generals of the Union army.
His military service, from Forts Henry and Donelson, through Vicksburg and Atlanta and on to the Carolinas, demonstrated not only his own abilities and personal courage, but also was emblematic of the skilll and sacrifice of his "Egyptians" of southern Illinois generally. His political thought, too, illustrative of the times, reflected the shift in Illinois opinion from initial confusion and wavering, to near-solid support for Lincoln and his war policies.
In conjunction with this very readable biography, the reader might be also be interested in "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife", Mrs. Logan's memoirs, which cannot be regarded as entirely reliable but which are a valuable adjunct to Jones' biography and give a colorful insight into the times.

Charlie Jones shows he is a master of cutting to the chase and teaching us the lessons of History that are found in the individuals that make it. Read it and see why Charlie is one of my heroes. Now, do yourself a favor and order it. While you are at it, buy a copy of "Life is Tremendous." It Is and the book is too.

Modern, cool detective
Jigsaw Jones is a modern detective. He talks like children talk today, he is "cool", and children can identify with him. It would be unfair to say that "The case of the Christmas Snowman" is his best case ever because all of Jigsaw's cases are good. My children love him and collect all his books, this one is no exception.

A Jigsaw Jones Mystery, The Case of the Secret Valentine
This was one of the first Jigsaw Jones books I read to my children. It hooked us and I've now read the eight in the series so far.The books are short enough to keep the kids interested.James Preller has the nack of putting the right ingredients in the books to make my children laugh, things that happen in every 4 to 8 year olds life. We've practiced the different secret codes that Jigsaw and his best friend Mila come up with. Also we learned abit about Abraham Lincoln even though we are Canadians living in England. The Jigsaw Jones books are well travelled and luckily I can get them through Amazon in the U.K., So I guess this is really a review of the series and not necessarily one book. They are nice reading before bed and my children are always ready to listen to the Jigsaw Jones books. Modernization of Oresteia
Mourning becomes electra is well known as a modernization of the Greek myth of the Oresteria. Perhaps the difference between Aeschylus and O'neill is to some degree a measure of the extent to which the weakening of the sanctions has weakend the emotions with they supported.
