Birds of America: The Complete Collection of 435 Illustrations from the Most Famous Bird Book in the World
Published in Hardcover by Laurel Glen (October, 1997)
Authors: John James Audubon and Tim Parmentor
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $75.00
Average review score:

Great Book, a few flaws
Good sharp, clear rendering of Audubon's 435 Birds. The images appear to be photo offsets of the original Havell prints, including small flaws like spots and tears. No page or image numbers. You have to pencil in your own by using the excellent table of contents at the back of the book. Solid, high quality binding. Excellent addition to any birdwatcher's library.

Readable bio of an unusual general.
"Black Jack" Logan was perhaps the best of the "political" generals of the Union army.
His military service, from Forts Henry and Donelson, through Vicksburg and Atlanta and on to the Carolinas, demonstrated not only his own abilities and personal courage, but also was emblematic of the skilll and sacrifice of his "Egyptians" of southern Illinois generally. His political thought, too, illustrative of the times, reflected the shift in Illinois opinion from initial confusion and wavering, to near-solid support for Lincoln and his war policies.
In conjunction with this very readable biography, the reader might be also be interested in "Reminiscences of a Soldier's Wife", Mrs. Logan's memoirs, which cannot be regarded as entirely reliable but which are a valuable adjunct to Jones' biography and give a colorful insight into the times.

A wonderfully poetic reading
Would it be blasphemous to quote an old adage that if God would speak it would sound like John Gielgud? Never mind if you consider the text as absolute historical truth, beautiful metaphor, or something between the two. It would be very difficult to find a better reader than Sir John. His voice shows every sign of age and that makes it sound just right. Also his carefully cadenced reading brings out all the poetry inherent in the King James translation of this material. An absolute Stunner! And an object lesson in dramatic reading for our current crop of microphone-influenced whisperers and mumblers.

A Jigsaw Jones Mystery, The Case of the Secret Valentine
This was one of the first Jigsaw Jones books I read to my children. It hooked us and I've now read the eight in the series so far.The books are short enough to keep the kids interested.James Preller has the nack of putting the right ingredients in the books to make my children laugh, things that happen in every 4 to 8 year olds life. We've practiced the different secret codes that Jigsaw and his best friend Mila come up with. Also we learned abit about Abraham Lincoln even though we are Canadians living in England. The Jigsaw Jones books are well travelled and luckily I can get them through Amazon in the U.K., So I guess this is really a review of the series and not necessarily one book. They are nice reading before bed and my children are always ready to listen to the Jigsaw Jones books. Kids will like to look at this one up close!
This book has neat step-cut pages that get bigger as the pyramid grows. There is simple text explaining the process of pyramid building for young children, as well as additional facts and information for older or more experienced children. I am taking my kindergarten class on a field trip to an Egyptian exhibit, and this will be a good book to introduce them to the pyramids.. we may even make our own! I was surprised when I received the book -- it is a hardcover with sturdy pages!

Fly softly and carry a big mace!
Even if I hadn't written the profile pages for this tpb I'd still go out of my way to tell people that it rocks. The introduction by Johns alone is worth the price of admission. Hawkman has been given a new lease on his four-color life and has never flown straighter nor looked better (with art by RAGS MORALES predominantly, the listing up there for Patrick notwithstanding). This is a trade collection that you'll go back to time and again for adventure and mystery.

Brilliant High Flying Fun
Geoff Johns is perhaps the best comic book talent to surface in a looooong time. His passion for characters and story telling are never more apparent than in this collected edition of Hawkman. Following the Winged Wonder on his newly reincarnated adventures, these stories will entrance you with mystery and enthrall you with a unique romance. If you missed out on these books, pick up this trade. You will enjoy the flight!

Outstanding Commentary on Revelation
This book is an outstanding commentary on the book of Revelation by a talented and knowledgeable author. This is a historical-critical exegesis of the book of Revelation. I found it thorough and remarkable. A must-read for anyone interested in the apocolyptic literature of the New Testament.

A Masterpiece of Nature Writing
Anyone looking for a chronicle of the American wilderness in its infancy would do well to start here. There is great charm in the journals of 1820, where the spellings are still Audubon's own, and the flavor of the times -- especially regarding life on the frontier, and concerning everyday life in old New Orleans -- is everywhere. With his "Bird Biographies" of everyday varieties, as well as descriptions of now-extinct species, such as the Carolina Parakeet, and Ivory Billed Woodpeckers, this book is a treasure not just for nature lovers and bird aficianados, but for lovers of history as well.
