Cardboard Castles, the best book I've read yet.
Out of all the books I have read, I feel that this is one of those books that can not be overlooked. I would never have run across this book normally, and now I feel that it is, by far, one of the most cleverly written, and philisophical books I have ever read. It is a book of 127 chapters, and aproxamately 250 pages. It makes for an interesting read. And I feel it is one that is the best for those with short attention span. It deals mainly with life, death, and love. Contained there in are all the comments that you always thought about saying, but never did, with the twist of the Minnesota WICHFA. It is a twisting between Vonnegut and Hugo, with real-life humor. Knowing the author personally, it is a master work of mind challenging humor. So,If you like a little subtle, obscure humor about the trials and tribulations, this is the book for you.

Cigarette Waltz: Seventeen Short Stories Adaptable for Theater
Published in Paperback by Dimitri Pubns (July, 1992)
Author: Philip-Dimitri Galas
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

Brilliantly funny and deeply disturbing (in a good way).
This book follows the psychic disintigration of a middle-aged, working class haus frau of the WWII generation, and the machinations of her insidiously evil, alcoholic neighbor Betty. Both characters are wildly funny and instantly believable. At times while reading this book I felt like I was a six years old, sitting in the kitchen listening to my Mom and one of her friends gabbing away. At other times I saw an all too clear reflection of myself and people I know. Never has existential rage been so much fun while still retaining all its pathos. If you loved Mr. Galas' play "Mona Rogers" you'll love this too.

Dynamic Programming and Optimal Control
Published in Hardcover by Athena Scientific (January, 1995)
Author: Dimitri P. Bertsekas

Average review score:

Best book I've used so far.
This book does a very good job presenting both deterministic and stochastic optimal control. The author does a particularly good job in presenting the derivation of the Bellman equation and its relation to variational formulations for deterministic optimal control. There are also many very good problems with which the reader can test her understanding, and the author has made many solutions available on his web page. Problems range from testing theoretical understanding to determinig optimal policies for various control problems. There are even some exercises which ask the reader to develop parallel codes to solve some problems, so I think there is something in this book for everybody. Richard Bellman once said that there is considerably more to optimal control than just locating the eigenvalues of some matrix in the complex plane. I believe that Bertsekas has remained faithful to Bellman's view with the broad range of problems which he attacks through dynamic programming. I am currently doing a PhD thesis in mathematics studying Bellman equations, and I cannot think of a better source for intuition about control problems than Bertsekas' book. He even does a nice job in pointing out where he has omitted technicalities in the mathematical treatment for those who wish a very rigorous approach to control. If there is a better book out there, I am not aware of it.

Leading Edge Thought for Future Business/Government
It is always a pleasure to read a well written book in a leading edge arena and that's exactly what this book provides. With the potential for myself to be involved with Test and Evaluation (T&E) in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) I was looking for a book that captured the latest thinking for Enterprise Architecture (EA) and had the vision of what the future held in this fast paced area of business. Chorafas, one of the most prolific writers and orchestrators of future thought, provides numerous real world examples to document the complex integration problems and a response to evolutionary trends. Being on Temporary Duty (TDY) in the Austin, TX area it was somewhat serendipity to see a front page story in the local newspaper about Dell Computers vision of the future. Dell uses EA extensively. Any senior decision-maker in private industry or government that's not familiar with most of the concepts captured in this book is doing a disservice to himself and the organization he/she leads. Nanotechnology, optics, and biological frontiers are all covered with the latest information and then linked to the most advanced applications, tools and methods available to maximize return on investment (ROI) for as Chorafas notes several times..."cost matters". One of the highlights is the numerous graphs and models to capture complex thoughts with relative simplicity.

a strange and fascinating book with wonderful pictures!
I have been a fan of Blair Drawson's work for many years. "Flying Dimitri" is particularly interesting to me because it is so imaginative and fanciful, and it makes me wonder what happened to Dimitri's mother. I'll bet she looked a lot like the queen of Mars! The paintings in this book are at the same time very pretty and very strange. Highly recommended!

Foundations of Radiation Hydrodynamics
This work is by far the most outstanding text in the field. It's completeness and attention to detail make it a "must have" for students of radiation hydrodynamics as well as for experts in the field. The republication of this book by Dover has done the field a great service second only to the service provided by the authors in writing it!
