The best book of circuit theory
I read this book in 1992. It was the first time. It took me almost 6 months to really understand all topics. Good knowledge of mathematics is a prerequisite for reading this book. You must understand linear algebra, graph theory and differential/integral calculus. This book gives so deep insight in electric circuits, that you'll be amazed. Knowledge presented in the book includes basic and advanced topics. Authors were so carefull to notice reader about which parts could be omitted. For everyone who really want to know what's happening inside every circuit of TV set, computer, everything which use electricity to work...well not really every electric circuit. This book doesn't cover circuits with distributed parameters, only lumped circuits, where Kirchhoff's Laws are always valid. But, if you are mathematician who would like to translate not so usefull equations in real world electric circuits, this book is a must! One of authors, Leon O. Chua is inventor of many beautifull circuits and this book really opened my views. I'm sure that anyone who read this book will be able to understand principles of analog machines which computational power is in supercomputer range. Furthermore, reader who understand what authors wanted to say, could try himself in building circuits which will/won't work. My circuits are purely tranlsated equations from the paper. This book told me "How to.." One more thing about this book, if you want to understand principles of cellular neural networks, chaos and many other "State of the art in electronics", first read this book.

BESTSELLERS are in the case, the best of writing
I have a little bit of a problem with the words 'Modern Classics' usually, but in this case it is appropriate. All five titles are worthy of the prefix.

Midwives is undoubtedly one of the finest pieces of fiction in modern years. Bohjalian mixes suspense with drama to create a masterpiece. Its starts out with a tragic death during labour, which may or may not have been the midwife's fault. As you follow the story through the midwife's daughter's eyes, you discover the truth in what is an interesting finale.

A wonder of translation, The Reader is a fascinating novel of morality and social injustices in postwar Germany, It focuses on the Holocaust through the eyes of 15 year old Micheal, whose older lover Hanna, as it turns out is guilty of unspeakable crimes. Emotional and stirring, The Reader is a must have.

Snow Falling On Cedars is a brilliant mystery set in San Piedro. A Japanese American man is on trial for the murder of a white man. Still reeling from racial distrust, the town is baying for blood, but one man must recover from his own distrust and jilted feelings rooted in his past to discover the truth. Beautifully written and vividly imagined, Snow Falling On Cedars is one of my favourite novels.

Believe the hype, Memoirs Of A Geisha is here to stay. This novel is incredibly popular and rightly so. It uncovers Japan's hidden Geisha trade and stuns us all with its revelations. Through the eyes of Japan's 'most famous Geisha' as we are led to believe, we see it all from the youth up, the training, the social manuevering, the infighting as our very own Geisha struggles with her own morality in her search for happiness.

Cold Mountain is in truth a beautiful love story. Winner of the US national book Award this book is strong, maybe not so as the rest, but entertaining and beautiful in its own right.

And finally, A Lesson Before Dying. Always controversial, this story focuses on a man set for execution. Jefferson is the black man on death row, and as he faces social and racial tensions, his grandmother wishes that someone might teach him to die like a man, and that is where our narrator steps in. Beautiful and poignant, Not to be missed.

So there we have it. Beautiful writing didn't die with Austen, the Brontes and Dickens. 20th century authors may just have what it takes to be classics hundreds of years from now. Read and Enjoy.

Great for Lenten study and devotions
This book will be most interesting to those who consider themselves as "metaphysical Christians", or into "New Thought" such as Unity and Religious Science. Fundamentalist Christians will probably find a whole lot to disagree with.

Many who are into "New Thought" are inclined to stay away from Bible studies, but I feel there is so much to learn and understand when one has a full grasp of what the Bible actually says. This book is a 47 day study, best started on Ash Wednesday and ending Easter Sunday.

Wilson, who was founding pastor of the Christ, Unity church in Los Angeles, draws on all four of the gospels along with an immense knowledge and understanding of Biblical times and lands. The 47 chapters take us from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday, day by day, a little at a time. Each chapter begins with the Biblical account, followed by the author's discussion on the significance to each of us that the words hold. The chapter ends with a short devotion appropriate to the study. There is a day by day study guide in the back of the book which gives the Biblical source for the lesson, questions for discussion, and a short prayer.

I've gone through this study twice, and have found that it keeps me in tune with the true meaning of this season.

Small book for younger readers/listeners
Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books; also, don't confuse these books with many other Pooh books, such as read-alongs or cassete tapes or Disney versions.

This little book is a near-exact reproduction of a Chapter One in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.

A very nice edition
Although this is not quite right yet for my 2-1/2-year-old daughter (more text vs. pictures than she's used to), it is very nicely done and I'm sure she will enjoy it at some point. The books are small but are hardcover and the overall package is functional and attractive. I was skeptical about Charles Kuralt doing the narration, but he really does a very nice job. I'm also sure these tapes, with or without the books, will be great for trips.

An absolutely charming audio and book collection!
Both of my children (ages 4 and 18 months)love this set. We play them in the evening as we are winding down. The narration is wonderful with and without the book. Of course, A.A. Milne's stories are wholesome and entertaining. We love Pooh!!

A great, short adventure novel!
When the old man set out on his daily routine he experiences more than he has expected. He has found his dream fish and now has the task of reeling it in.
Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in a small village in Illinois. After he graduated from high school he started to report for the Kansas City Star where he learned to get to the point in direct, simple sentences. After going to WWI and being injured he fell in love with his nurse. These events inspired his first novel, which led to his amazing career as an author.
In my opinion "The Old Man and the Sea" was a great adventure and accomplishment book. In the book the old man is so dedicated to his goal that he endures pain and hardships to achieve this goal. I also think that the book is well written in the aspect of how easy it is to read. The book is easy enough for a younger reader to follow yet it is still interesting and in depth enough for the more average reader to enjoy. So if I had to rate this book on a scale of one to five I would probably give it a four because sometimes the book gets a little too detailed and boring.

Why Read?
Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, has the battle of his life with a ferocious marlin in the book, The Old Man and the Sea. He is a very poor man and is very unlucky with fishing but with the help of the little boy, Manolin, he gets through the days of his life. Santiago's adventure with the giant fish begins eighty five days after his last catch. The Old Man and the Sea is an appealing and an enjoyable book because Ernest Hemingway is an excellent writer.

The events and actions of this book create interest for the readers. For example, Santiago was not angry with the other fishermen when they made fun of him. He is a good man and is so wise that being made fun of does not bother him. A good protagonist is always a good character to read about. Moreover, the characters and their actions can be related to real life situations. For instance, the old man ignores all the laughing made by the younger fishermen because he cannot catch any fish. This is like a student dealing with bullies and humiliation at school. These are some points that Ernest Hemingway made to arouse interest to readers.

Hemingway has a very unique writing style. For example, in the book it says, "Most of the boats were silent except for the dip of the oars." He has a very soothing way of writing. This is also easy enough for kids to understand. Also, Hemingway does not use clutter in his sentences which makes him different from the rest. For instance, he writes sentences like, "Only I have no luck anymore;" which is very direct. Many writers tend to use clutter to sound professional or important. Hemingway's style and voice is calming and intense in all the right places.

I think The Old Man and the Sea is a great book to read. My favorite part of the book was the climax when Santiago defeats the antagonist. If I could change something in this book, I would change some of the rising action so it is more gripping. I would recommend this book to adults and teenagers. Although a grade school student could read and understand this book, they would not value the moral of the story. Hemingway's original style and the characters in this book make it an interesting and wonderful book to read.

A hero of Hemingway
I read this book in Chinese, and I plan to read it in English again.(Maybe something that I am writting is not good translation from Chinese to English)I think the best way to understand a novel is to read it in its original language.Hemingway is one of my favorite authors.I like his style."Less is more."He uses the words that are not hard for me to understand, and they express his thoughts as well as the big words. In The Old Man and the Sea,Hemingway tells us a story about an old fisherman's experience on the sea.The part I like best is after the old man's way home after he finally catches the big fish, but he doesn't have enough strength to protect his victory from the sharks. He is all tried thirsty and hungry.Unfortunately, the sharks eat his fish bit by bit.So when he gets home, the fresh of the fish is gone, only the bone left there.Hemingway uses symbols a lot.For example, the old man's dreams of lions play on the beach represent the old man's youth and power. The old man is a hero that Hemingway creates successfully.

David Duke critiques his critics
I find it interesting that the editor of this college textbook (source book)about my campaigns and the politics of race in the South went out of his way not to ask me for an essay on the subject. Is this book supposed to be an unbiased academic survey of my impact on the politics of race in the South, when every article is hostile toward me and my ideology? Would it not be appropriate to include an analysis by the man at the very center of the controversy? I am sick of the so-called academic community, which is supposed to support diversity of opnion and open-mindedness, repeatedly preventing students from getting all sides of important issues. How can students taking a course where this textbook is used, obtain a balanced view of these important issues when they purposely are prevented from hearing from the person at the very center of the controversy.

I don't blame students from having a negative opinion about me and my political methods and ideology when they are not allowed to hear my side of the story.

Those that are interested in hearing my position articulated in detail can order my book, My Awakening from Amazon. Only then can you truly make a fair assessment of myself and the vital issues which propelled my candidacy.

A Response to Duke
Unfortunately for Mr. Duke, it appears that he is headed for Federal Prison for a few months. Hopefully, he'll take the time to actually read our book so he can provide us with a more informed review that is constructive, rather than just self-aggrandizing. We'd enjoying hearing his informed thoughts, which could be quite interesting. Maybe, just maybe, then I'll read "My Awakening" and review it for Mr. Duke.

good book for scholars/researchers, even if not for Duke!
I thought this was a good and comprehensive volume on the whole "politics of race in the South" motif, and have found it useful in my research. The fact that Duke apparently thinks it should have been about lionizing himself and his pseudo-intellectualized racism (e.g. his amazon.com review) isn't surprising, but it's a solid point in favor of this book, if you ask me. Good social science and interesting perspective in most of these chapters, backed by reasoned analysis of the larger picture-- the rebirth of race as a divisive issue in regional (and national?) politics. Funny how this title is now 5 years old, but still speaks to things like the current confederate flag controversy in South Carolina. Emphasis on electoral phenomena, but enough to keep a public policy-oriented type interested as well.

Charles Kuralt is a bore
Several months ago, I purchased a set of the Winnie-the-Pooh stories narrated by Peter Dennis on tape. Not being able to find these on CD I purchased this CD narrated by Charles Kuralt. What a disappointment! He reads the stories with almost no inflection and absolutely no changes in character voices. If you want a really great rendition of these wonderfully funny and witty stories, seek out the ones narrated by Peter Dennis. Charles Kuralt was better at the news, with adults. Yawn!

Entertaining for kids and adults
Charles Kuralt reads these stories wonderfully...just the right sort of dry wit that I suspect A.A. Milne had in mind. My daughter falls asleep to the Pooh stories every night; first we read the book, and then she listens to the CD while she goes to sleep. Incidentally, the complete text of "Winnie-the-Pooh" ('though not "The House At Pooh Corner", as far as I know) read by Kuralt is available on audio cassette from Penguin Audiobooks.

First-rate bedtime story telling
True, this title won't leave your kids wide-eyed and jumping on the furniture, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. My 31 year-old wife has difficulty falling asleep at night after stressful days at the office, and let me tell you, Mr. Kuralt's deep, comfortable, fatherly voice does the trick every time. The readings are low-key but very well delivered--perfectly suited for the subtle genius that permeates the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. My only disappointment is that Kuralt didn't record more of Milne's 20+ Pooh stories (the CD contains 3 stories and some poems). If he had, I would have snapped them up in a heartbeat.

Botanical report from China
The title pretty much says it all. Ernst Henry Wilson made several expeditions into China and collected a wealth of trees and shrubs. The Arnold Arboretum took care to have these all described and published in this three volume work, edited by the Arboretum's director C.S.Sargent.

Not illustrated. Many formal descriptions (Latin). A valuable source book for those working on Chinese trees and shrubs. This reprint is of a decent printing quality.

For background see Spongberg's 'A reunion of Trees'.

Poor work
Terrible book. Not a single reference. I purchased the book hoping to have some insight into what may have gone on, but this reads like fiction. How does the author know that Hemingway was impotent anyway? Whiting seems obessed with that point. He holds some strange grudge against Hemingway.

Some Interesting Tidbits
Anyone knowledgable about Hemingway would know that a book about his involvement in WWII would not be flattering; he was clearly playing soldier in a pompous self-important way. But this book, while it has interesting tidbits (without any references), has a bizarre obsession with Hemingway's impotence. Also, it seems that the writer begins to fancy himself a "great novelist" himself, what with his repetitve, melodramtic references to the "Factory of Death." Maybe he got co-opted by Hemingway, much the same way the people in his book that he criticizes did. If you can avoid getting irritated by this, it is an interesting read, although you wonder how much of it is factual.
