A crazy hyperbolisation from Shaw finds truth today.
I have always admired Shaw, but really, this time he has outdone even Heartbreak House. Shaw skillfully leads us into supposing Englnad about 50 years in the future from when he wrote it, and with a British constitution. From the "Royal Veto" to the point at which America declares "The Declaration of Independence is cancelled, we wish to rejoin the British empire" this truly is a "political extravaganza". I have never laughed so much at the way government is portrayed, and yet we learn a lesson throughout: the illusion of democracy extends to places where we wouldn't have looked and gives a wonderfully applicable look to America's government now, every government!

Autobiography of a Super Tramp (1908)
Published in Paperback by Kessinger Publishing (April, 2003)
Authors: W. H. Davies and George Bernard Shaw
Amazon base price: $25.00

A masterpiece
A timeless tale of a man who, by little fault of his own, finds the world has turned its back to him. The book is a true story, about the author's own struggle to exist, to exist and to write. A heart-warming account of how the penniless among society survive and sometime realize the dreams we all have within.
A true starving artist. Davies really did starve for his art. He achieved an amazing feat by saved his meager pennies for long cruel and cold years and months. He lived homelessly or more properly 'tramped about'. Davies realized his dream and paid for the self-publishing of his first set of poems.
The preface by George Bernard Shaw after reading the works Davies sent him, recounted how Shaw found Davies living in a homeless shelter in London.
Sadly this book is no longer in print but can likely be found in most libraries.

A great literary companion
A great companion to reading the works of George Bernarnd Shaw. It helps to understand the literary techniques singular to the author, the socio-political background of his writings and the themetic structure prevalent throughout all his works. This is truly a necessary companion to reading his work.

~~~~~
G. Bernard Shaw was a great playwright and that is the reason why his plays tend to outshine his novels. Nonetheless, this is a five-star novel and it should not be so hard-to-get.
A superbly presented treatise
In The Eclectic Odyssey Of Atlee B. Ayres, Architect, Robert Coote (professor emeritus of architecture at the University of Texas, Austin) informatively surveys thirty years of the architectural career of Atlee Ayres, focusing on Ayres' residential architecture in the San Antonio suburbs of Monte Vista, Olmos Park, and Terrell-Hills. It is in these architectural designs that Ayres' eclecticism is most apparent. Coote studies twenty-five of Ayres' houses in detail including their plans, spaces, exteriors, materials, and structure. Additionally, Coote describes Ayres' architectural education, travels, and career highlights. Highly recommended for professional and academic architectural reference collections, The Eclectic Odyssey Of Atlee B. Ayres, Architect is a superbly presented treatise on the work and career of a most remarkable American architect.
If you are a beginner,this is the best book for you.
This was the first book I read for my Communication Engineering course and this subject became one of my strengths after I read it. The style of writing is conversational and not overly technical.The arrangement of the topics is again just like a beginner needs for it to be.The language is lucid .The matter covers not only the technical details but also the practical difficulties.The author has taken pains to make things simple except in places like receivers where its impossible. In my opinion it is the best place you can learn your basic radio and modulation thoery and also stuff about receivers and radio wave propagation from.Be sure to read about tuned amplifiers,oscillators and push-pull amplifiers...you wouldnt understand most of the book if you dont know these elementary concepts.
There were very few things that I didnt find in this book...one was the procedure for determination of AM modulation index by the use of a Oscilloscope,but i dont think i can recall anything else which was missing.
George's Store a Memorable, Delightful Love Story
George's Store shows us how love gives depth to our whole lives. George is a man who loves his job--waiting on the customers at his general store. When a customer walks into the store, George's eyes twinkle, and he says he will guess what they want. George delights and charms his customers with this guessing game, at which he is quite good. One day, a pretty young woman walks into the store, and George sets about trying to guess what she wants. He guesses one thing after another, and each time, the young woman says, "No." "No." "No." After George has guessed every item in his store, the pretty young woman points to him, smiles, looks him directly in the eye, and takes George completely by surprise when she declares, "George, I want you!" In short order, they are shown married and living happily with their children in back of George's beloved store. As a parent, I appreciated this very positive representation of someone with an ordinary job dedicated to making his life's work extraordinary for the pleasure of himself and his customers. I was quite impressed by the modern young woman who could confidently declare what she wanted. And I appreciated the closing images of a close knit family happily interacting with each other in the apartment behind the store. I read this story to my children when they were in pre-school and elementary school, and now, at 19 and 22, it is one of the books they remember best. Recently, my daughter was describing a young man who had charmed her with his engaging manner and imaginative wit. I told her she sounded like the woman in George's Store, and she said, "Yes! George, I want you!" This book, which is now out of print, deserves to be re-issued: it's an excellent model for today's children (and adults)in many respects.
Last Line of Defense
Inside the Military-Industrial complex
It is about time that we saw inside the businesses that drive the military-industrial complex. We know about the wars and Governments, but who run the companies and what pressures make the people inside them work for them in the first place.
This book attempts to get under the skin of the people who actually work inside the companies - as well as those who work in the secret services and elsewhere. It shows the pressures they are under and how they buckle under that pressure: causing them to go over the line between what is legal and what is right.
Bribery is common outside the US and why shouldn't US companies take part if those from the rest of the world do the same - at least that is the cry from within the businesses involved. This creates continuous tension within the book as it follows a business - Global Corporation - and its people from the Yom Kippur War in 1973 through the Iraq hostage crisis and the Iran contra confusion until just before the 1996 elections.
Who is right and who is wrong? Should we export defense equipment? How do we police it, if we do? What pressures are senior employees under when they have to compete on a world wide stage and keep stockholders satisfied? Where do Governments put pressure on those corporations and take advantage of them whatever they do?
This book has a really good shot at answering these ever-present questions while showing clearly the characters involved in a human way that shows the tensions for the first time.
Readable and tense throughout, it is an inside-out reminder of how difficult the problems are.
May bloody well be the best book of quotes ever!
This is my favorite book. There are touching quotes and hilarious quotes on almost any subject. As I was reading, I was turning the corners of pages with great thoughts or quotes. It quickly became ridiculous, as I was turning down the corner of almost every page. This book makes a great gift.
