The Lives and Deaths of Shelley & Byron
If you're interested in the life of Edward John Trelawny, you'll have to look elsewhere. Suffice it to say that Tre' (as his friends knew him) was a privateer, a scoundrel, a lover of poetry, a freedom-fighter and a loyal friend of the most prolific literary talents of the romantic period. "Records of Shelley, Byron and the Author" is an account, not of Trelawny's extraordinary life & adventures, but of the two men that helped make that life so extraordinary. In his own words, he tells of the secret lives of Byron and the Shelley's, their romp through sunny Italy and the tragic death of Percy in the coast of Spezzia. The tale continues as Tre' follows Byron to the bloody civil war in Greece, where Byron too dies. To his credit, though, it is never "Trelawny's tale", but "Byron and Shelley's tale" as told by Trelawny. This deep, insightful book shows the poets as only a close friend could. Yet throughout, one can not help but love Trelawny himself: the man who supported the impoverished Mary Shelley to her dying day... the man who bought a slave for $10,000 only to set him free... the man who reached into the embers of Shelley's pyre, withdrawing his heart. If you love the poetry of Byron and Shelley & have even a passing interest in the men behind the legends, then Trelawny's memoirs are a must-read.

Tantalus sets a new standard for modern Theatrical epics
The unabridged version of this play, if performed in its entirity, would come in at just under 15 hours. TANTALUS is a new collection of cycle plays written by John Barton, famous for his work with The Royal Shakespeare Company, and is a continuation of his ten-hour cycle, THE GREEKS. The story focuses on the Trojan War, broken into three parts: The Outbreak of War, The War, and the Homecomings. Mixing in with modern settings and transporting back to ancient Greece of the 12th century BC, TANTALUS brings the timeless concerns, dramas and issues that were important to the Greeks into our contemporary world. The play focuses on many of the famous mythological figures of Homeric poetry and Greek tragedy, such as Agamemnon and Menelaus, Clytemnestra and Helen, Achilles, Neoptolemus, Odysseus and others, to give a perplexing and highly accessable version of the War that was ten years in the fighting. Originally staged with the Denver Center Theatre Company and The Royal Shakespeare Company, under the Direction of Sir Peter Hall, TANTALUS' world premiere became the focal point of epic theatre. The original production, which was an adaption of John Barton's script, runs approximately 10 1/2 hours, being broken into three nights of theatre, or one-day marathon performances, running from ten in the morning until roughly ten at night. The production has powerful performances, breathtaking scenic devices and a compelling and fascinating story which shows us that the Greeks are not as "ancient" as we might think. This production is currently on tour in Western Europe throughout the 2001 season. While this is an endurance read, it is truly a wonderful work for theatre buffs and classicists alike.

Revamped Organization Makes This Bible Even Better
This Thompson Student Bible gets it right. The original Thompson Chain reference was a great bible study tool, with many helps, charts, topical studies and archaeological facts. The problem with the former editions, was the editor's insistence of making the reference material available as appendices, and not in context with the text. One might read about the city of Jericho in the book of Exodus, and then see that somewhere on that page where it is mentioned there was a note indicating an archaeological reference was available. But one had to use the "chain" number and then move to the back of the Bible to find the note in the appendices. Now, in this Thompson Student Bible most of the reference material is contextual -- you will find the reference material on the page where the text addresses it first. Students and first time readers of the Bible will read it and benefit from this organization. There won't be that daunting task of figuring out the organization, or the intimidation factor of having to look up all the reference material in the back. Buy this Bible and give it to your teenager, or buy it for yourself. This is a great way to study the scriptures.

Words Over War

Amazon base price: $85.00

"War over Words" is a "wow."
This book admirably manages to be at once dispassionate yet purposeful, scholarly yet readable, and so lucidly written that it's invaluable for both the most well-informed reader of world affairs as well as the less knowledgeable reader looking for a thoroughly comprehensible overview of the world's most intractable areas of conflict. A serious contribution towards the resolution of global hostilities.

If you want to know what the colonists believed...
I bought this little treasure just to understand the thinking of my ancestors.

Good, fun stuff.

Excellent suppliment for primary students or gift for teache
This little book was a standard primer from the seventeenth through the eighteenth century in America. It teaches reading and vocabulary based on Biblical and theological facts. My children love it.

Its theology is reformed theology, with which I am often in disagreement, however it provides an excellent basis for imparting Biblical values while teaching children to read.

Every Parent Should Own!
For over one hundred years this book has been the basic textbook for new readers in America. Most of America's heros most likely learned to read using this book. Isn't it a shame that today it is against the law to use this textbook because of the quotes from the Bible. All parents should keep a copy of this book in their possession to remind them of the roots by which we have all come!

Excellent examples of advanced templates
I found this book to be very good, except for a few unnecessary parts. A lot of what the book covers (i.e., "scientific & enginnering") doesn't overlap my problem domain, and the Fortran/C intro sections were skipped since I already knew C++. It would have been better if the Fortran/C sections were put into different books. However, the rest of the book was excellent; even the stuff I didn't use right away was intellectually stimulating.

This book should be bought by every serious C++ programmer. Barton and Nackman show several *excellent* examples of more advanced template usage than the boring old "generic container".

For those of you who are more familiar with advanced template programming, the "B&N trick" gets its name because it's in this book.

OO programming paradigms and concepts are well explained
This work clearly illustrates the concepts of object oriented programming paradigm with emphasis on scientific and engineering applications in a lucid way using very good examples. After introducing basic C++ syntax, function overloading, classes, constructor and destructor in the first part of the book, the second and third parts of the book quickly delve into concepts like virtual function interfaces, inheritance, templates and explains them using concrete examples, and if possible, in an abstract way. Some use of these advanced techniques has attracted the attention of other C++ gurus. An excellent reference for OOP-inclined scientists and engineers.

methods for expressing commonality in C++
Enumerates reasons for choosing C++ as an object-oriented programming language for scientific applications. Provides an excellent introduction to C++ concepts for FORTRAN programmers. Gradually explains advanced techniques such as templates, abstract interfaces, and class hierarchies. Develops new C++ data types for arrays, matrices, smart pointers, strings, and Albelian groups. Employs relevant code examples in areas such as finite element grids, solving systems of equations, GPIB controller, and automated dimensional analysis. Discusses techniques for creating C++ wrappers for legacy C and FORTRAN libraries. Concludes with a program for data modeling that is built from the preceding chapters. The data-modeling chapter illustrates bottom-up program design.

Not bad but could be better
It is supposed to be ecumenical in design. - This hangs on the particular author of the book he/or she is commenting on. It seemed disjointed, hesitant to take a decisive stand in some places.
It is current moderate scholarship.
It is good as one commentary amongst others in your library, such as Harpers for example. I highly recommend it if you have more commentaries to compare it to. - 4 stars.
The CD (included) is 30.00 extra to unlock and put it on your computer.

More coverage than some commentaries
I sat in the real-world bookstore several hours before deciding that the two one-volume commentaries I wanted were this one and the New Jerome. The Oxford simply devotes more space to its analyses than did any of the other commentaries I looked at, including New Jerome and HarperCollins. You get a more in-depth treatment.

My spot-checking noted, for ex., that Oxford includes some comments on the "woman taken in adultery" story in John. Some commentaries merely sniff that the passage is a late addition and don't comment on it at all. Oxford at least includes some textual and exegetical remarks in an appendix.

The Oxford's virtue is its vice, of course, in that its devotion to covering the text means less extraneous material. The New Jerome, in classic Catholic fashion, won't let its 1000 pages of commentary go by without 300 pages on theology, papal pronouncements, hermeneutics, etc., so as to "frame" the commentary. But since I love that kind of stuff, whatever the motive, the NJ is the other one I decided to get.

So: Oxford for objective academic treatment, & NJ for a more dogmatic (tho very sharp intellectually) treatment. I'll put them on my desk with my Bible & let them fight it out.

An excellent commentary on the Christian Bible
The Oxford Bible Commentary is a concise, expert commentary, providing useful verse-by-verse explanation of the Christian religious book.

The commentary encompasses all books recognised as canonical in any of the major churches of Christianity, and also includes excerpts from books in other canons. The advanced Bible scholar may additionally wish to refer to more specialist textbooks for detailed insight into specific topics or individual biblical books.

This is among the most authoritative Bible commentaries available. The reader will appreciate the expertise of the distinguished contributors, their concise verse explanations, thorough verse cross-references, and critical approach. The book is intuitively structured throughout and, despite the large size of this volume, easy to navigate.

It is a helpful aide toward informed reading of the Bible for any reason - religious, theological, historical, literary, or general interest. An extensive bibliographic resource and relevant maps complement the text.

A good Bible commentary such as this is highly enlightening. Each verse in the Bible suddenly makes much more sense in the light of expert explanation. In reading the Bible without the benefit of well-informed commentary, essential considerations such as the historical context, and relationships between verses, are almost certainly overlooked. While opinions expressed in this commentary are objective, they are frequently conservative and tend to be representative of the mainstream consensus.

The OBC is a huge, high quality reference textbook, with a proportionate price-tag, and I fervently commend it to anyone with a serious interest in Hebrew or Christian scripture.

Companion piece to the textbook.
As an emergency medicine resident, I am reading this text as part of the program. The review book is laid out in the same way as the texts. The questions are all referenced in the Howell text with appropriate discussion. The questions are overwhelmingly in the single best answer format. There is a high proportion of questions in the negative (all are true except). The questions go over the major parts of the chapter. Anyone using this text for reading will benefit from the review offered by this book.
