great intro to auto electronics
for a long time now, i was looking for a "start from scratch" book in understanding auto electronics. a book with illustrations that actually explains how it works. this book is a great introduction, a must buy if you really want to know the fundamentals. even though it's about RV's too, it tells you all you need to know about autos.
the more you read, the better you understand what you read.
i now know how the battery really works, know what it really does, what the altenator does. i know about switches, sensor, actuators and solenoids now. at first you you need time to grasp the concept, but it gets easy to understand very quickly. 5 stars.

Native American Oral Traditions: Collaboration And Interpretation is an impressive collection of seven sets of intercultural authors, who present oral Native American stores with insightful commentary that adds perspective and discovery to these already fascinating stories. This body of oral literature, all of which comes from the American West, has been passed down through centuries and includes material from tribal sources ranging from the Yupik in the Arctic to the Yaqui in the Sonora Desert. Highly recommended for Native American Studies reading lists and reference collections.

Traditional Storytelling Today: An International Sourcebook

A TREASURE !
Praise be to Margaret Read MacDonald for compiling these essays about contemporary storytelling around the world. Many are written by those who grew up hearing tales told around the hearth; all are solidly grounded in academic theory without (for the most part) being pedantic or jargon-y. Of special interest are the many articles about telling stories to children, a subject that has bee neglected by too many anthropologists and folklorists. Well-worth the price.

Hard boiled at its best!
This is a great read, I couldn't put it down. If you like good character development and a twisting turning plot, Richard Barre is the author for you. In Blackheart Highway Wil Hardesty is back for the fourth time. The writing is spare and elegant, the plot complex and satisifying. I love the wonderfully rounded characters, making it eassy to keep turning the pages. also check out: The Innocents, Bearing Secrets, and The Ghosts of Morning. I alsojust finished another good thriller/mystery: "A Tourist in the Yucatan"

my first Barre book, will not be my last!
I just finished reading Blackheart Highway and really enjoyed it. The story pulls you in and keeps your attention throughout. The setting is so real that you feel as if you have been there too. In subtle ways the story brings to mind days of my childhood spent listening to songs and riding in cars. The dialoge is spare and colorful and after a little getting used to, easy to read. Richard can sure pack a lot into one sentence. Wil Hardesty (the main character) is someone you will want to know and read all you can about him.

Barre's best so far!
Richard Barre has done it again with his latest novel Blackheart Highway. I started reading this author after a trip to Bouchercon where I heard him read an excerpt from one of his novels. After that I read The Innocents and Bearing Secrets in short order and waited anxiously for The Ghosts of the Morning. Blackheart Highway is Mr. Barres fourth offering and in some ways his best.

One of the most compelling aspects of Richard Barre's writing is the subtle quality of the plot. The characters and events are believable while the feeling of the story has a haunting timbre. As the story progresses the line between villain and victim start to blur as Will finds himself embroiled in much more than vague threats or long ago murders. I am struck by Mr. Barre's understanding of the "little evils" of compromise and need that seem to be the foundation for the monstrous wickedness.

I liked this book very much and liked even more the time between readings. The flavor of the story lingered and I found myself wanting to hurry up and finish whatever silliness I was doing so I could get back to the real stuff of Blackheart Highway.

Learning to Walk Again: How Guillain Barre Taught Me to Walk a Different Path
Published in Paperback by Writers Club Press (December, 2002)
Author: Ann K. Brandt
Amazon base price: $11.95
Average review score:

A beneficial book for survivors and caregivers
As a fellow GBS survivor, I was eager to read Ms. Brandt's account of her experience. This disease does not discriminate when it strikes, and every person has a different journey. I suppose when you've been struck with such a life-altering experience, from out of nowhere, you seek connection and explanation.

The book touches upon the elementary aspects of GBS, and poses some important questions. Like Ms. Brandt, I spent a good deal of time while in my recovery stage trying to prevent what had happened to me from happening to others. She reaches out to others who are in the acute phase of the disease through patient visitation, to other survivors through meetings and symposiums, and to the medical community through this book.

Why had we been promised that we'd "get it all back"? Why isn't post-rehabilitation fatigue addressed as a separate phase of the syndrome?

This book asks some important questions, and I hope that its publication will serve as a catalyst to get them answered.

A healing book!
I am going through recovery from GBS. Reading this book has been a great experience for me; once a received it, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Ann's experience is very similar to mine and her book helped me in a therapeutic way; I re-lived many emotions, situations, funny moments, etc., and learned a little bit more about this syndrome. I recommend this book for people who are going through recovery as well as for those caregivers around them.

I can relate as a "Fellow Comrade"
I read this book after spending five weeks in ICU, followed by four months in a Rehab Center...recuperating from Guillain Barre Syndrome. I can relate to how she had favorite nurses...so did I, and being totally paralyzed it may be hard for others to understand just how much that extra little fluff of the pillow makes after laying for eight hours in the same position. My body was very sensative, and any movement was painful...I can imagine how much more painful it was with her. The things I found hard to understand in the book were the thoughts she had in her day to day activities....oh, I would be driving by the supermarket now, on my way to pick up my best friend Bonnie...these thoughts are just hard for me to believe. I know my thoughts were like "when will these leg spasms quit...when will I walk again...when will the aching in my legs get better...when will I get out of here....how much is this costing....when is my next therapy" these were my thoughts. The book does give a good view of just how devastating GBS can be. For me....It will be 4 years this Christmas since my GBS attack, and I am still not well. From the waist up I am about 95%, and from the waist down I am about 50% which includes leg and feet numbness, muscle spasms/cramps,joint pain, and stiffness. But I feel blessed to have back as much as I do, and I pray that God will give me the strength and courage to continue my recuperation from this catastrophic illness.

Bed number Ten
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I ordered this book by mail and recieved it on Friday afternoon and started reading it instantly. It is now sunday afternoon and I just finished it. I want so badly to talk to this lady to see how she is today!! To read how uncaring so many people were is so heart breaking to me. There were the few that took the time to be more attentive but everyone should have been that way!! I am a nurse at a Houston hospital and I see nurses and other staff act like that everyday and it breaks my heart because I am a very caring nurse and go above and beyond to help my patients. Every nurse needs to read this book to see how people can be feeling when you treat them that way!! I would recommend this book to everyone I work with and know!!

A real tearjerker!
I am an RN and all too often, patients are faced with uncaring caregivers who perceive meeting patient's needs as "too much trouble". If there is a medical person who perceives Sue as a "whiner", I would not want that person to enter my room! The book is a compelling novel, I could not put it down! It included wonderful stories of her travels and family. I wished the book was longer, I hated for it to end. I cried throughout the last portion of the book because it was so touching. The one thing I think it lacks is getting its point across to caregivers. Some caregivers are too uncaring to fully comprehend the torture Sue went through lying there day after day, unable to move or speak, being at the mercy of others. I put it on my list as one of the best books I have ever read!

A great book for chicks & classic rock fans
This book is especially enjoyable if you're into celebrity "name-dropping" books. You won't believe some of the famous men that made Pamela's acquaintance! I don't name-drop, so read the book for yourself if you're intrigued. I will say, however, that among them are several musicians of the 60's & 70's and one actor who briefly made white suits popular again.

This book will also be of interest to true classic rock fans.

While the author is no Shakespeare, she sure knows how to spin a tale! I admire her because she followed her heart and lived an "alternative" but fulfilling lifestyle when other women her age married young and started breeding. Bravo to Pamela for lavishing in her youth and "getting it out of her system"!

Read this if you're looking for something fun that'll keep you turning the pages...but not thinking too hard...

All about a groupie!!! Wild, wacky, fun!!!
I still have my dog-eared copy from ages ago. It's sorta like a bible. Every once in a while I'll pull it out and skim through it. This is all about the life of a groupie chasing rock stars from her late teens to mid-twenties!!! From the late 1960's to mid '70's, the ultimate Rock'n'Roll peak!!! If you want to hear all about Pamela ending up in club closets with all the members of Iron Butterfly (not all at once), then read this book! She takes you there, Sunset Strip in the late '60s. This book is also about Pamela invading Jim Morrison's home to do a stoned-out backbend in his face (to the annoyance of his long-time girlfriend, also named Pamela!), losing her virginity to a member of Steppenwolf, hanging out with Frank Zappa and Cynthia Plaster Caster (famous groupie who "plastered" rock stars like Jimi Hendrix), and playing "hard to get" with Jimmy Page (it took the Led Zep guitarist two days to get her). She also lived with Don Johnson for a year. Keith Moon wore her panties. What a fun life! Pamela has a self-deprecating wit and a great way with words. I hope they re-print this book before my old copy disintegrates!

The Queen Of All Our Dreams...
Superb. This is still my favourite of all Pamela's books and a true Rock Culture classic. Anybody who was Frank Zappa's nanny and Jimmy Page's girlfriend in the same lifetime has to be worth reading - and this gal can write.

Unlike some books, this is in no way a name-dropping cash-in. Pamela actually did all these things, was all these things. She WAS Don Johnson's girlfriend, and buds with a young Vince Furnier (Alice Cooper), Robert Plant, Mick Jagger, Keith Moon etc. with an awesome collection of photos to prove it.

Written with the wisdom and humility that only comes with the approach of middle age, (when, in my opinion, women are just beginning to enter their prime), IWTB is a very human look under the hood of the Rock Machine. There are so many delicious insights into the whole Led Zeppelin era, that by the time you have devoured the book, you feel like you had actually been there.

Unfortunately IWTB is presently out of print, but her ElectricGypsy website may have some information about future availability. If not, keep surfing Amazon. It will be worth the wait.

An excellent introduction to the plays
I read this book as a child; my mother gave it to me and my brother before we went to see the plays. It was an excellent introduction to the plays and to the world of Shakespeare, and helped me understand what I was watching. I also enjoyed reading the stories themselves, and familiarized myself with Shakespeare this way. It made a huge difference, as became quite clear to me when we read Henry IV in ninth grade in school, a play for which I had no Lamb version. I didn't understand that play and took no pleasure in it, whereas I did enjoy much harder plays (e.g., Othello, A Winter's Tale, etc.) that I had the Lambs' help with. Depending on reading level, the Lambs' book would be appropriate for anyone from seven or eight to 13 or 14 years old.

Great Intro to Shakespeare
Although this book is written for children it is great for all ages and is great to get the basic story line before you go to a play. I read most of the plays in this book (I have not yet read all of them) when I was 11. Now that I have been reading the actual plays of Shakespeare I always start by reading the short version of the play in this book and than read the actual play. I can understand what is going on much better that way. I also recommend "Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare for Children" by Edith Nesbit which gives about ten page versions of each story verses the thirty pages per story in this book and also has a smaller vocabulary which makes it better for younger children.

A Great Introduction to Shakespeare for Kids
I love this book! I have always loved Shakespeare and wanted my children to enjoy the bard as well. I always read these stories to them before we watch a play on TV, video, or rarely, on stage. They are a step ahead in that they already know the plot and can then enjoy the language more fully. They are developing a love for Shakespeare, too!
