We recently moved our family overseas. My son and I referenced "Goodbye House" almost daily to help ease the transition. The book provides areas for children to write and draw their memories of their old home, friends, favorite places, school, etc. It follows the move from beginning to end. In the back are stickers that we used to put on the boxes containing my son's belongings. When we arrived at our new home, he knew immediately which boxes were his and was excited to see that his things really did follow him across the ocean. The end portion of the book provides ideas for getting to know your new neighborhood. Also, there are spaces to draw and write in your impressions of your new house, new friends, new school, etc. I would highly recommend this book to anyone anticipating a move with a young child. It's a great way for them to feel involved when everything around them seems beyond their control.

especially good in recognizing fears and feelings about young movers -- worries about a new school and friends, keeping addresses of old friends and former teachers. My 9 year old still has the address of his kindergarten teacher if he wants to write her...

One summer in Italy, two women find themselves being waved through roadblocks just because it never occurs to the police that women could be the criminals they seek. One says to the other, "any four women could rob the bank of Italy and get away with it while the police searched for four men." As this joke evolves first into an idea for a screenplay and then, unexpectedly, into the plans for a daring crime, a large cast of characters living in a Tuscan village move into action. Well-written, nicely paced, and full of laugh-out-loud passages.

My daughter is delighted with this journal. It prompts a child to write about things they may not have thought about. It contains a lot of the same information that adult travel journals contain (e.g. record of expenses), but in a kid-friendly format with illustrations. I think it will be a great thing for keeping my daughter busy on the plane ride.

Richard M. Titmuss's The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to Social Policy has to be the best book that I have read this summer. It is hard to believe that this book was first published half a century ago and still holds true of the social and economical policies of life, metaphorically represented as blood. The first few chapters in this book that has recently been included in this edition illustrate the importance of how the concept of donating a non-substitute fluid of life presents various dilemmas in association with recent outbreaks like A.I.D.S. Originally, when I first purchased this book, I thought I would criticize how such social and economical policies have changed significantly over the fifty years. However, after reading this fascination and quite reflective book on our society and generosity today, I have realized that not much has changed since this book was first written. Yet, Titmuss does not accept or reject certain theories of the concept whether it is right or wrong to get paid to donate blood as opposed to voluntary donation. This book satiates the curiosity of how giving blood originated for the economics, anthropologist, philosopher, as well as for the average individual. Those who seek a challenge in trying to understand our health care system and H.M.O's will find this book as a great source of comparing how the giving of life has changed over the years, in the United States and abroad. Most of what Titmuss describes in his technical language is based on the H.M.S health care in England. However, the reader will hopefully realize the similarities and differences in socialized medicine compared to our managed health care as established today. If you are looking for an intellectually stimulating book questioning what is the gift of life and how much it is worth economically and socially, Richard M. Titmuss's The Gift Relationship: From Human Blood to Social Policy is the prescribed treatment for you.

Aaron Siskind is one of America's finest photographers and this wonderful book, shamefully out of print, shows his documentary images of residents of the real Harlem in the 1930's. If you are familiar only with Siskind's abstract photographs, these will come as something of a shock. They are beautiful, simple, elegant and filled to bursting with the pride of the people who are the subjects of Siskind's work.

The book contains images from three separate photo projects that Siskind undertook in the 30's for The New York Photo League. They were collected and exhibited by the Smithsonian (National Museum of American Art) in Washington, D.C. in 1991.

The beautifully written (almost poetic) foreword is by artist/photographer/film maker/writer/etc. Gordon Parks and is worth the cost of the book alone. There is also a well-written introduction to the photographer and his work by Marcia Battle and, most impressive is an oral history of eight of the people Siskind was immortalizing, done for the Federal Writers Project, worthy of Studs Terkel.

But it's the photographs that will stay with you: a nattily dressed old man, obviously a performer, waiting backstage for his cue to go on; a young girl, sitting on a milk can instead of a chair, eating a meal with her young mom in their kitchen under the freshly washed laundry which has been hung to dry; Jones Barber Shop (Haircut: 25 cents)comfortably sharing a brownstone on West 132nd Street with the Young Students Interdenominational Minister's Alliance right next door to May's And Johnson's Beauty School; a nude, black dancer performing for white patrons only; the proud owner of Our Own Community Grocery and Delicatessen (Milk 6 cents, Bacon 10 cents) posing in the sun in front of his shop. Every image takes us back to a specific time with very specific people. And in every image Siskind's art is very evident.

This book should not only be put back into print, it should be required in our schools. This is American history beautifully and movingly rendered. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

This was a wonderful book. It taught my children how to make and handle money!

Having grown up on this sheep ranch in Montana, it was achildhood that will always be remember and cherished. My brother madethis even more so with his book, A Short Season. There were so many happy fun times of children, and then there were the times of extreme sadness and sorrow for our family. When my father died our world came to a halt and we had to struggle to gain it back. I think we have done that with the book, it has reunited our family and we have gone back in time and the memories are still so much alive. This book of a Montana childhood will make whom ever reads it go back to their childhood, a feat we seldom do in our modern society, we are so busy and involved in the trials of our own lives we forgot we had a childhood, brothers, sisters and parents who were what we are. What a disappointment of a book. Four unauthorized biographies with no information about what these people do to keep in shape.
To top it off it lacks accuracy.

I'm in 8th grade and have been dancing since I was 6, lifting weights since I was 11, and interested in nutrition since I was 12. I bought this book because of my interest in health and was inspired by such a great book! It describes Tyra Banks, Denise Austin, Christie Brinkley, and Claudia Schiffer, some of my favorite famous females. If you're interested in health like me, no matter what age you are, you must try this book!
