I come across this book two months before in GemmologicalInstitute of india at mumbai.And it is very useful to everygemmologists and as well as to every gemstone dealers and also everystudents...

The style is splendid, the execution dashing. This is Tropic Of Cancer written with more talent and professionalism. The book is tight, witty, full of hilarious observations. Unfortunately, it may not go down well with many American readers for a number of reasons (and this is very, very sad): The author uses a very European approach, part-Russian, part-French, in his narration. He is not exactly bashing New York or America, he is merely observing and telling the story, but his arrows might seem too vicious at times (although there is plenty of poetic praise and romantic awe as well). This is hard to explain. A whole bunch of American writers in this century were much angrier. I don't know... The book is enjoyable throughout. I haven't the faintest idea why it hasn't been more popular.

This is the story of an initially skeptical group of American investigators who spent several years studying case of Eduard Meier. Meier was a one-armed Swiss farmer who claimed to have been visited by extraterrestials over a period of years. These researchers made numerous trips to the Meier farm in Switzerland during the period when contacts were allegedly taking place. It describes the reactions of senior scientists at IBM, NASA, the US Navy and elsewhere to the hundreds of photographs, physical evidence and advanced scientific knowledge presented by the minimally educated Meier. Though often dismissed as hoax, the Meier case leaves a great deal which is unexplainable in any ordinary way. These visitations may well be more significant than the Betty & Barney Hill case in impacting our understanding of the place of humanity in the universe. The book left me wanting to know more.

This is without a doubt the saddest Christmas story I have ever come across. I first read this story on my 5th Christmas and it has made me misty eyed ever since.

An unnamed girl is sent out on the cold, cruel treets to sell matches by her equally cold, cruel father. She turns her income over to him and he beats her when he feels she has not sold enough matches.

One night, frozen to the bone, the girl lights a match. A glorious Christmas tree appears, bright and blazing. That vision vanishes when the match burns out.

The second match she lights shows a splendid holiday feast -- a Feast of Illusions. This, too, fades away when the match burns out.

The last match she lights reveals her beloved, deceased grandmother. The girl runs to her, never to return to the cold city streets.

The next morning she is found frozen to death in the street. This story gets to me every single time. I could never read this out loud because it is just too sad.

Gufeld does a good job of covering all the lines of the 4...Qxd5 variation of the French Tarrasch (and that scenario above has to do with the Main line with 10...a6!). There are also 52 annotated games to help re-inforce what you just read. A must have for all those that play the 4...Qxd5 line against the Tarrasch.

This book is worth the price just to see the games against Smyslov, Bagirov, and Kavalek---all of which are among the hundred greatest games ever played!

Dune provides a reasonably objective account of the October Revolution and the Civil War without embellishment or historical name-dropping (Lenin and Trotsky are hardly mentioned). The editors have done history a service by making his writing available in this format.

If you're looking for a book talking rigorously about the mathematical foundations and the formalism of quantum mechanics, this is the one you were after.

Perhaps you've encountered lack of rigor in presentatoin of QM in standard physical textbooks. Sometimes it's not harmful and the theory can survive. But there are plenty of cases for which the presented formalism by physicists, though useful in dealing with many problems, turns out to be absolutely wrong and even leading to logically wrong conclusions.

This book presents you with a rigorous, well established formalism of QM, arising from the very fundamental roots of the theory in functional analysis and Hilbert space.

There is at least one advantage: making you sure that QM is logically correct and works. But through learning this point, one underdstands that what really works is not exactly what one encounters in standard physics textbooks. Another benefit is of course to learn pretty theories of Hilebrt space, measures and operators.A disadvantage, for a physicit like me, is the lengthy proofs; okay, ignore them and just study the propsitions themselves quite rigorously.

I think it's worth having the book as a source for many mathematical theories and a nice perfect approach to QM.

Although this book is scientificly sound, it is easy to read and understand. The facts and figueres as well as the options we are facing on future engergy systems are really mind-opening. A must for everyone, who cares about the future.

This monograph gives a good overview of a very important subject in both mathematics and physics. The phase space formulation of classical mechanics via the Hamiltonian formalism is represented throughout this book in the language of symplectic manifolds. The geometry of symplectic manifolds has many surprises considering the very simple definition of a symplectic form. One would not have suspected that they would imply the Gromov squeezing theorem and other interesting results. The authors do an excellent job of explaining this theorem and other intricacies of symplectic geometry, in particular the idea of symplectic capacities, Floer-Morse theory, and the Arnold conjecture. The Gromov squeezing theorem has an analogue in quantum physics. Jokingly called "quantum claustrophobia" by physicists, this represents the idea that particles in the quantum realm tend to avoid small regions of phase space. The book should be of great assistance to the mathematically-inclined physicist interested in the properties of nonlinear dynamical systems in phase space. Even though the KAM theory is only briefly discussed in the book, the presentation should prepare the physicist reader for additional reading on the subject. The most interesting and important part of the book is the discussion on how symplectic capacities are related to volumes and Lebesgue measures in ordinary Euclidean space. The capacity and volume agree as invariants only for two-dimensional symplectic manifolds. In addition, in four dimensions and higher, open sets can be very different in terms of shape, size, measure, and topology, and still have the same capacity. The author's presentation of these facts is very well-written and thought provoking. Probably the most difficult part of the book is the justification of the squeezing theorem using variational principles. The technical details of the proof are very intricate and take lots of time to digest. Everything about the symplectic category is interesting and this book is a fine compendium of modern results in the field.
