A Book Long Overdue
The Canadian troops in Korea may have been few in number, but they had their share of challenges and hardships. Canada's Korea experience largely coincided with the relatively static and nasty trench warfare period of 1951-53. Through no fault of these troops, history ascribes to them no major combat laurels. But their long-overlooked story is no less compelling than that of other U.N. contingents in the Korean War. Barris has done a commendable job of presenting a complete and balanced history without hyperbole. Accordingly, the reader is given an appreciation of 1950 recruiting and (in many ways comical) training; the horrific train accident in transporting troops westward through the Canadaian Rockies; the Pacific crossing and deployment in Korea, and the combat histories of the regiments that rotated through over a three-year period. The passage about the Canadians' role in guarding communist POWs gives insight rarely found elsewhere. Anecdotal information from individual interviews is what gives the book its real depth. These passages give interesting details about bivouac experiences, uniform and weapons selection, and connectivity with other allied armies. Another unique provision recounts how these young soldiers came face-to-face with their enemies just hours after the armistice. The saga of the Canadian troops would be incomplete without some recognition of individuals' post-war adjustments. Barris has covered all of these very well. The vintage photos are poor in resolution but informative nevertheless. The maps are great and are indispensible for a text like this. In all, this very readable book on a subject that has been chronically overlooked until now.

Practical and Effective!
If you are interested in reading this review, then I highly recommend you read this book by Dr.Brad Barris. I did and it has had a profound effect on my life!I believe that now more than ever we as individuals and as a society desperately need to have a grasp on understanding where our anger comes from in an 'increasingly angry world'. In his book, Dr. Brad Barris enlightens the reader in regard to better understanding anger, and how to manage it. He presents the tools and then teaches one how to use them to acquire the skills necessary to manage this basic human emotion. As Dr. Barris speaks to health professionals, parents, teens, husbands, wives, and others through this straightforward, practical, and reader-friendly book, we can learn a great deal about ourselves and understand the role anger plays within our relationships, our careers, and in our parenting roles. I feel that we can begin to see that it is actually possible to make our world a less angry place in which to live and in which to raise our children. There are only a few books that I keep close by and also recommend highly to others because of the nuggets of truth and the life lessons contained in them. This is one of them!

A good overview but a few cars are missing.
Great coverage of TV's Batmobile and the Munter's cars. Authors also remind you about cars you didn't know Barris did: The Beverly Hillbillies truck, the Flintstones (film of course) cars, updates of the Knight Rider Firebird, the Jurassic Park Explorers, and the infamous sitcom "My Mother the Car" (the butt of many Johnny Carson jokes). But also taking up space are forgotten cars from forgotton projects...the Bugaloos dune buggy and a TV special "Romp". Cars I would have liked to have seen but didn't make the cut include the Monkee Mobile, the Green Hornet's "Black Beauty" and the Stutz replicas made for the TV adventure series "Bearcats!". Overall a good book, but I have a hunch that only the surface of Barris' career has been scratched. How about a large format book with lots of color and details on the surviving movie cars and "Kustoms" that made Barris the legend he is?

a must reading for the true custom car lover.
I had the opertunity to meet george barris at the Houston Autorama. He not only took time to autograph his book but to visit about custom cars. We visited for quite some time and he went to look at my custom car. I was impressed by his down to earth genuine interest in my projects. Movie cars built by Pegasus Motorcars he liked my designs and the wild wing on the back was his favorite. Thank you George Barris you are my Hero. Charlie Van Natter. .

detailed, informative, honest and up to date
DAVID FETHERSTON DID A VERY GOOD JOB ON THIS BOOK. EXTRACTING INFORMATION FROM KING GEORGE IS NO EASY TASK.

In the Dark of Night
As a result of a police sting Dr. Jack Lewiston is apprehended and accused of being the psychopathic killer known as "Jack the Ripper" who was murdering and mutilating prostitutes in New York City. During the course of his being examined by a police psychiatrist who bears a striking resemblance to him, Jack kills the doctor and assumes his identity, escapes to London. The New York City police are corrupt and selfishly wish to keep the escape a secret. They authorize Henry Marboro to go to London to bring back Lewiston dead or alive. Marboro had been forced into retirement while he was investigating the case of the murdered prostitutes, one of whom was his sister. Eventually Lewiston becomes the assistant to London's medical examiner and tries to find a normal relationship with the examiner's daughter, Prescilla. However, his appetite for murder and mutilation are overpowering. He leaves a path of mayhem. Marboro tracks Jack from London's East Side to posh London where he meets and falls in love with nurse, Loraine Broderick. Jack plays cat and mouse with Henry, the police and the public with taunting, boastful letters to the press. When he realizes that Marboro is too close he kidnaps Loraine and forces a confrontation with Marboro. In the ensuing struggle, Jack is shot and plunges into the river. The police believe that the decomposed body found in the river later is that of Jack which closes the case. Or does it? The action is fast paced; the suspense building to a peak to the finale. The characters are well-drawn. The details of Jack's murders and mutilations are graphic and gruesome, not for the faint hearted reader. There is explicit sex. Both of these while explicit are necessary to the story. Flowere has captured the sights and sounds of New York City and London's East End in 1888. You can feel the squalor of the city and the deprivation and desperation of the people. He maintains a fine balance in the narrative of the first person(Marboro) and the third person(Lweiston). He delves into the demented mind of Lewiston with his love/hate obsession with his mother. In his departure fromm contemporary thrillers,Flowers has given us a compelling and powerful account of Jack the Ripper. This is another theory of "Who was Jack the Ripper"? Flowers makes a strong case in his presentation.

A ... good read!
Set in 1888, New York City. Jack the Ripper was killing and mutilating prostitutes. One of Jack's victims had been the sister of NYC Homicide Detective-Criminologist, Henry Marboro. The blow was more than Henry could stand and he was forced to retire. Finally, the police captured Dr. Jack Lewiston, a respected surgeon gone mad due to his childhood abuse. When Jack escaped and fled to London, England, Henry was brought out of retirement. The Police Commissioner and the Chief of Detectives sent Henry to capture Jack, dead-or-alive, and bring him back to face justice. However, the news of Jack's escape would not be made public. Henry was on his own.

Jack the Ripper began his killing spree anew in England. He again became a respected doctor, with a different last name. Jack and Henry begin a cat and mouse game as the bodies of prostitutes grow. At the same time, Jack and Henry each find a woman to love.

***** It gets no better than this! R. Barri Flowers has written another thriller guaranteed to hold onto its readers! It was so gripping that I forgot to breathe a couple of times! I highly recommend this author! *****

Barely scratching the doggy collector's itch
As an avid antique dog memorabilia collector, I had high hopes for this book, just based on it's title. Sadly, it left me dissapointed. While it's got great graphics and pretty pictures (most taken of items for sale at swap meets, I doubt they even bought half of the book's treasures), it is utterly devoid of any serious aspect of collecting doggy antiques. I had fervently hoped for a well researched synopsis of the different breed representations in products through the years, a discussion of the most popular artists/companies that produced the most sought after items, or even the most common ones. But there isn't even a summary as to what breeds were most depicted in any particular era. The book is mostly page after page of terriers and poodles, the easiest things in the hobby to find. While the chapter headings all indicate many types of items that might be found, (ie napkins, figurines, doorstops, etc.), that's as far as they go. This is eye candy for the average trendy housewife who wants to buy whatever the decorating magazines say is "In" at the moment. I just hope all the stuff they buy because of this book eventually gets resold to we canine collectors who view it as more than another cute Martha Stewart-esque fad.

Dog junk and canine collectibles
Dog junk and canine collectibles haven't received their own collectibles guidebook before: enter Flea Market Fidos, a unique guide to canine collectibles which covers everything from dog drawings, to crafts and stuffed animals. Besides history and values, Flea Market Fidos also covers the best shops, flea markets, and web sites for locating canine valuables.

Fido is fabulous!
What an adorable book! I received it as a gift yesterday and I just couldn't put it down. The photos are great, the writing is comical and its a real feel-good book!

A sweet, thoughtful little book
Not a masterpiece, but for twenty years now I have been unable to forget it. And I guess that says something.

A "rags to riches" love story
This was the first book written by game show producer/host Chuck Barris in the early '70's (before "The Gong Show"), and was basically a fictionalized autobiography of his life at the time. It seems a bit reminicient of "Love Story", but is a good read and a "rags to riches" story on how when you marry for money, you wind up paying for it in the end.....

The ALL TIME DEFINITIVE MASTERPIECE, a la James Michener
This book should be required reading at every high school in the United States to give insight into the workings of one of the most fertile designer of quality entertainment ever. It should be reprinted in languages and distributed into all third world countries. The text flows so naturally from Mr. Barris' fingers, that I felt as if he were an extention of my own thoughts.

What's What?
I didn't much like "The Dating Game", thought "The Newlywed Game" was okay, and have never seen "The Gong Show" so my impressions of Chuck Barris weren't very vivid. However, after discovering he wrote the song "Palisades Park" and reading CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND: AN UNAUTHORIZED AUTOBIOGRAPHY, I have to admit that Chuck Barris is a genius, even if he is the "King of Schlock".

I thought this book would be silly, uninteresting, and perhaps a little quirky. Well, it is quirky, but it's also quite entertaining and interesting. It's hard to say whether the events described in the book or fact or fiction. Barris writes about everything in his life in a very self-defacing, humorous manner (including the events we know are fact) so it's impossible to figure out if the events described are all true, partly true, or just a total yarn. I mean it wouldn't surprise me because the book reads like a cop-off of some of the best mystery/cloak-and-dagger writings around much in the same way that "The Gong Show" was a parody of popular talent search shows. Yet, at the same time, the events are so bizarre and fit so well into known facts, everything really could be true.

Anyway. The book is full of sex, violence, and foul language; but other than the language, none of it is very graphic. I mean, it seems early contestants on "The Dating Game" could describe their sexual exploits more graphically than Barris. Nevertheless, the book is thoroughly entertaining and difficult to put down.

Who Cares About Whether It's All True?
We can spend a lot of time arguing about whether or not the CIA ever hired Chuck Barris to kills Soviet Spies throughout the world. We will probably never know the truth and maybe it's best we never find out.

Still, there are a few facts about this book that you can't argue. First off, Chuck Barris is a very funny person. If you don't find yourself rolling with laughter at a few passages in this book then you have no sense of humor. Even if you thought the Dating Game and the Newlywed Game were affronts to civil behavior, you will laugh at some of his recollections about those shows. The same is true for some of his memories about the Gong Show.

Another fact about this book is that Barris is very self-centered and narcisstic at times. For that reason, you might come away after the reading this book with a negative opinion about Chuck Barris the person. Still, you will do so with some fun because he can spin quite a yarn. Even if you don't believe any of his CIA stories, you will enjoy reading about them. You might think Barris is either a jerk, a liar, or similar to the people you knew in college, but you will still have fun reading this book.

Could not put it down
The book is a well-written, fast-paced narrative of Chuck Barris' bizarro, manic depressive alternative universe.

Barris was a television game show producer and he relates the history of his most successful programs -- The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and The Gong Show. He also, briefly, mentions his less successful programs, like The Mother-In-Law Game.

What gives the book its punch is Barris's claim that while he was a TV producer, he was also an assassin for the CIA. He relates that he murdered people, bad guys, all over the world at the behest of the U.S. Government. Fact or fiction? Who cares! It makes for a great read.

The humor-challanged should skip this book.
