Fear Factors Is Scary As Heck But Definitely Makes You Think
Once I started reading Fear Factors, I couldn't put it down. It totally captivated my attention, tickled my imagination and scared the heck out of me! Sacco knows how to grab the readers attention and pulls you in and then just when you are getting comfortable with the progession of one of the stories, he throws in subtle twists which surprise you.

Fear Factors is very entertaining. I found it had everything. As a woman, I was very impressed with the provocativeness and sexual undertones and innuendoes used by Sacco. Not only was the book scary, but believe it or not, some stories were very arousing. I also found some of the stories highly imaginative and controversial which really made me want to read on and read more.

The book was exceptional in that it is 10 short stories so you are not committed to read for days before you finally reach the punchline. As a professional, I like to read on my coffee breaks, lunches and before bed. This fit quite nicely with my work schedule in that I could knock down a story or two daily. I was always entertained. There are some stories I do not recommend reading before bed. I did have nightmares!

I have always been an avid reader of Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I find Sacco's writings very comparable to them and some of the stories even scarier! I can tell you right now...I hope there are at least 2 or 3 movies to be made from the short stories. They are so unique and audiences will be leaning from the edges of their seats!

In closing, I strongly recommend reading Fear Factors if you enjoy believeable, educated sci-fi/fantasy and horror. You will not want to put this book down. If you really like being scared and entertained, this is the book for you. And should the author Peter Sacco read this review, thanks, you made my lunch breaks and you also kept me awake at night! When can we expect your next book?

This strong precise outlook reflects different aspects of different sides of the business spectrum. It's a truly positive look at successful businesses and the great minds behind them. Grove, Smith, Lynch, Rowland, & Volcker all share insights & directions in a volatile era. With Gretchen Morgenson, Senior Editor at Forbes magazine, letting these truly gifted individuals openly express ideas, predictions and success fortitudes. Forbes Great Minds made a lasting impression on me. It was great to listens to these fascinating people in an informal interview. To pick up one new idea and one new lesson is worth the time spent, but too generate the detailed information they provided is extraordinary.

Greek and Roman Technology : A Sourcebook : Annotated Translations of Greek and Roman Texts and Documents

A fascinating and accessible look at ancient technology.
_Greek and Roman Technology: A Sourcebook_ by Humphrey, Oleson and Sherwood is a fascinating and yet accessible examination of ancient technology in all its aspects. The sourcebook format is particularly well suited to such a diverse topic, and brings the reader closer to the Greeks and Romans in letting us read their own writings about technology. The authors have amassed a spectacular collection of passages from ancient authors on all aspects of ancient technology: the rise of technology and civilization (including some mythical sources), sources of energy and basic mechanical devices, agriculture, food processing, mining, metallurgy, construction engineering, hydraulic engineering, household crafts and workshop production (metals, wood, ceramics, textiles, etc.), transport and trade, record-keeping, and military technology. The final chapter on "Attitudes towards labour, innovation, and technology" is particularly interesting in light of modern issues. The passages themselves are well translated into readable English and are prefaced by short yet very informative introductions on the subject at hand. There seem to be no missing categories I could think of. A short introduction explains the approach of the book, the sources, and contains an essay on "society and technology in antiquity." There are several thorough indices, which make it a handy reference book and source for further study. Anyone who is genuinely interested in the ancient world or the history of science and technology should enjoy this book. It is eminently dippable and can easily be read a few pages at a time. It would make a great present for a well read friend.

Riveting...I couldn't put it down!
This book chronicles the life and faith of a true man of God. I was inspired by the journey the Rev. Peter Church traveled from the time of his conversion to Christ, through his recovery from a near fatal accident in a South African gold mine and his ministry that has challenged and inspired many and still does today. If you want to read a good book and be blessed and inspired by the life of this present day "saint" you'll love I Shall Come Forth as Gold.

Flower Power
This book got me down on the ground to peer up into the cupped flowers of my hellebores to study their pollination structures and set me on stake-out around my crocuses to see who came to pollinate them. Just as The Natural History of Pollination predicted, the first honeybee of the season moved from the chalice of one crocus to the next and to the next, checking out but passing over the intervening primrose, hellebore and Oregon grape flowers. The crocus has an agenda, the bee has an agenda, and I enjoyed an early spring day in the garden more because I had more insight into their agendas. This detailed book is accessible to anyone with a basic science vocabulary and is richly illustrated with photos of plants and their pollinators, as well as helpful line drawings. I recommend this to any gardener who wants to deepen their understanding of what's going on in their garden and to any student of natural history who wants to better appreciate the complex coevolutionary dance around us. This book has made me more attentive to a world of wasps and tiny flies, and to the myriad bee species. It has helped me see flowers from the point of view of the pollinators essential to them: insects, bats and hummingbirds. Those charming dots of color on foxgloves and hellebores serve as landing guidelines for bees. The sweet perfumes of lilac and honeysuckle seduce butterflies. The carrion odor of jack-in-the-pulpit and arum lilies attracts flies. My wild ginger imitates the scent of a fungus on which a certain kind of fly lays its eggs, luring this pollinator to its flowers. And how about those white flowers that open in the evening to draw moths? I keep this book handy as new plants come into bloom, so I can appreciate them better as I understand their strategies for reproducing themselves.

You Cannot Go Wrong With This Anthology!!!
With stories like "Ferryman" (Eric Brown), "The White Stuff" (Peter F. Hamilton & Graham Joyce), and "A Night on Bare Mountain" (Graham Charnock), anthologies don't get any better than this. My only quibble is with the experimental narrative "Thirteen Views of a Cardboard City"(William Gibson) which rounds out the volume with a whimper, not a bang. Otherwise, this is Hugo & Nebula territory.

An absolutely essential element in the library of every NSur
Drs. Kaye and Black have provided the field with a highly remarkable two-volume text that emphasizes operative events as the central focus. It is, without question, a major addition to the discipline's reference resources. As the editors state in their preface, "Operative Neurosurgery is a comprehensive text of clinical neurosurgery intended for both the practicing neurosurgeon and the neurosurgical trainee. The philosophy of the book is to describe the best clinical practice. This is based on combining the latest advances in basic neurosciences that underpin neurosurgery with a thorough appreciation of the art of clinical neurosurgery: the operation is only one component of the management of the patient and the surgical procedures can only be of optimal value to the patient when based on sound clinical judgement and combined with excellent postoperative care." The fundamental framework of the text is carefully devised, with the broad areas of cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders covered thoroughly in 18 sections comprising 174 individual chapters, which are authored by a noteworthy international group of contributors that number more than 400. Each of the individual contributions is relatively brief but substantive, crisp, lucid, and exceptionally well edited, with a generous number of marvelous line drawings by the eminent medical illustrators Diane Abeloff and Gillian Lee. The formatting, halftone presentation, and design of tables and graphs are streamlined and provide for easy readability of the material. Great attention to detail is evident in the content and presentation throughout. Virtually all important operative topics are addressed in a highly contemporary manner. In addition, the reader will find the opening section, titled General Principles, highly worthwhile, including such chapters as "Surgical Physiology," "Perioperative Care," "Special Consideration for Children in Neurosurgery," "Patient Positioning," "Cerebral Protection," "Surgery in the MRI Environment," and "Informed Consent." They provide a stimulating and practical substrate for the following section covering the entire scope of modern neurosurgical procedures and ancillary management problems. The initial cranial section, titled Head Injuries, is comprised of 10 subsections presenting elements of strategy and technical management. The section includes chapters on all major issues attendant to this heading, with specialty chapters on "Head Injury in Children" and "Injuries to the Skull Base and Paranasal Sinuses." Subsequent sections, covering Malignant Brain Tumors, Meningiomas and Hemangioblastomas, Sellar and Parasellar Tumors, Ventricular Tumors, Pineal Tumors, Posterior Fossa Schwannomas and Glomus Tumors, Vascular, Hydrocephalus, Epilepsy, Craniofacial, Skull Base Exposures, Functional Neurosurgery, CNS Infection, and Cranial Vertebral Abnormalities, all provide broad scope, detail, and a truly contemporary perspective. The next sections provide detailed and appropriate views related to contemporary spinal surgery and present vertebral column and nervous system problems exclusively from the neurosurgeon's point of view. The closing eight chapters elucidate the neurosurgeon's role in the management of peripheral nerve problems, with an excellent overview section provided by Kline, Tiel, and Hudson. A detailed and highly useful 67-page index facilitates the user's entry to topic exploration within the extensive presentation. Drs. Kaye and Black are two of neurosurgery's most esteemed intellects, with an immense wealth of experience in editorship, publishing, and all literary aspects of the field. Their combined talents have led to the development of a highly important work for the general neurosurgical community. Its detail and scope along with its readability, offering a precise rendering of the statement of modernity in the field, make it an absolutely essential element in the library of every neurosurgeon.
