Excellent perspective on life...very down-to-Earth
I really like Anderson's perspective on life and how to live it. His quest for answers and knowledge and insight is admirable.

Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing
I think this is a great reference book. I have had prof. Groover in 3 of my Industrial Engineering classes at Lehigh University. There is not a single semester when I don't go back to use the book as a reference. The book is very easy to read, and to understand.
Iowa's Geological Past: Three Billion Years of Earth History (Bur Oak Original)

There's more to Iowa's geology than you thought
The author spends four hundred interesting pages explaining in detail the geology of a state you would have thought didn't have any. It's well-written, with many charts, drawings and maps. For each period there is also a good list and description of the life forms prevalent.
I'd strongly recommend it to anyone interested in geology or just an interesting read.

Journey to Haunted Planet Fascinates Kids
The best thing about Journey to the Haunted Planet is the 12 silvery holograms of aliens within the book. The holograms hold the odd faces of aliens and moon-like craters and surfaces. While the story is a little simplistic, the holograms will fascinate kids of all ages, including parents. I'd especially recommend the book for boys.
Wood Frame House Construction
Published in Paperback by ()
Amazon base price: $11.25
Average review score:
Lots of material, but a little old
This book has many things to recommend it. It includes a wealth of material on wood frame house construction, from laying out a hole in the ground for foundations, to framing, to "paint and paper". And it's clear and generally easy to read. It was designed for people in apprenticeship programs and trade schools, so it's oriented toward practical details, not engineering theory, which will make it a good match for most do-it-yourselfers, too.
On the other hand, it clearly is an older book. Attempts have been made to keep it up to date with newer techniques, but a lot of obsolete material remains, and it's not always easy to tell which methods are new and which old. The obsolete material could be a plus, in some cases -- if you're renovating an old house, for example. But I wouldn't place absolute trust in this book as a bible of new house construction.
I am a structural engineer, and reviewed this book primarily in my search for resources to recommend to my residential clients who are involved in do-it-yourself renovation projects.

Detailed bibliography of Tolkien's own work
This is a richly detailed bibliography of J.R.R. Tolkien's writings. (Keep that in mind-- this is not a bibliography of Tolkien criticism or scholarship-- only of Tolkien's own works). Each edition of each work is described in careful detail-- subtle distinctions in the cover, title page, etc. are noted as are variations in spelling, typography, errata and corrections. To be honest, I'm not sure how relevant this work is for the average Tolkien fan-- or even for the Tolkien scholar. It will certainly be useful for book collectors, used/rare booksellers, book appraisers, and others who are interested in the book itself as a physical object)-- but I think there's very little of interest here fans interested in broadening their understanding of Tolkien's fiction or for scholars interested in writing about it. Because of its very limited, very specific utility, I can't really justify a high rating for this. Don't get me wrong-- for what it is, it's thorough and quite excellent. But, I just don't think it's all that *useful* of a book to anyone but a small handful of bibliophiles
expensive, but great information
Although this rather pricey work is intended for booksellers, collectors, and librarians rather than for the general public, I believe that just about anyone who is interested in the writing and production of Tolkien's great works will find much here that is both informative and interesting.

Slightly disturbing to say the least...
Journey through the graveyard, the forest, the scrapyard, the swampland and other spooky surroundings with a small brave spider in search of "No Body" who has run off with various bits and peices of the inhabitants of each scene. Between each page is a flap, and when you flip it, exactly "who's there" and which sorts of peices are missing is revealed and it is indeed a "horrorble" sight. The "Some Body" waiting for you at the end, is the most "horrorble" sight of them all. Truly grotesque.

structural analysis
Extremely poor text. The example problems use formulas that come "from out of the blue" with no explanation of how to apply them to the situation. The explanations of how to solve the problems are totally inadequate. To a student, this text would be absolutely useless, and may cause many potential structural engineers to pursue other avenues of study. Absolutely should not be used by any professor for teaching structural engineering to students!!
Structural Analysis
Very poor text. Illustrations are very plain. Many of the example problems simply contain formulas with no real explanation of how and where they are used. Much of the "in between" steps that are essential for a student to learn the material are left out! The book is also short on verbal explainations. Chapter 5 on shear and moment diagrams is awful. I had to refer back to a strength of materials book for shear and moment diagrams. Come on guys, put a little more effort into the small details next time. Many more STEP BY STEP examples are needed in this text.
