Moving tribute to an important American writer
Andre Dubus wrote what is arguably the best short fiction of our generation. His stories are powerful and stay with the reader long after the book has been closed. The same is true of this book of tributes. Andre Dubus 111 wrote the foreword to the collection, a beautiful tribute to his relationship with his father. Tobias Wolff wrote the afterword. In between these pieces the book is filled with brief, intensely personal stories of the impact Andre had on people's lives. Contributors include Lee K. Abbott, Frederick Busch, James Lee Burke, Chris Offutt, Robert Olmstead, Tim Parrish, and many other fine writers. This book is an essential part of Andre's work, and should be read by anyone who admires his fiction.

enlightening book on indigenous land use
Many of us have been given the impression that the indigenous people of the Americas before white invasion lived wandering, nomadic lives of fierce hunting with little if any organized manipulation of their environment. This book corrects this impression with seasoned research. Indigenous California is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse areas in the world. This work focuses on the ways the people of the region helped sustain the land's yield for their own uses. Henry T. Lewis's contribution focuses on controlled burn practices, though the subject is included in several entries from other researchers. Burns occurred in every environment, were seasonally timed, and helped maintain a varied-age, mosaic landscape. Peri and Patterson and Ortiz cover maintenance of plants for baskets. Helen McCarthy discusses oak maintenance. Philip J. Wilke reports on bow stave extraction from living junipers. Swezey and Heizer discuss management of anadramous fish and also agriculture among the Paiute of Owens Valley, which involved irrigation, planting of grasses, and burns. The editors have done an excellent job at selecting the entries. All are fascinating and enhance the reader's picture of the West Coast as it once was. This reader from Texas wishes enough info was available on his region to do a similar compilation. Combine this book with Leeann Hinton's Flutes of Fire for a more complete picture of the richness of West Coast culture and with Helena Norberg-Hodge's Ancient Futures for an understanding of how indigenous wisdom can be sustained to improve our current lives. Indigenous people still, in California as elsewhere, face continued repression and this book can give some idea of the worth of their cultures and the importance of supporting their struggles.

Church Without Walls
Thomas Goslin, the founding pastor of the Community Church (English Speaking - primarily US origin) of Madrid (Spain), makes a powerful presentation for a form of church planting that is not tied to immediate or future plans for the building, buying, and maintaining a traditional brick and mortar church. Drawing from Tom's abundant experience with traditional congregations and the Community Church of Madrid, he explores the benefits to the ministry and mission of his large congregation worshipping on a permanent basis in a variety of locations, all for much fewer resources than required by traditional building-based congregations. A well balanced book, Tom does not hold up this approach as appropriate for every situation, but he makes a compelling case for broader use of "The Church Without Walls. This book is a good read for anyone interested in church planting, church growth, evangelism, and mission.

Great book for concept reference
This is an outstanding, easy to read, reference guide for the beginning or experienced tax professional. One thing I particularly like about it is that it addresses compliance and procedural considerations for every main topic -- something that's hard to find in any other comprehensive volume. I highly recommend this book as a desk reference.
