What is Life? Is it What we Make it?
In his debut novel, Robert L. Anderson offers the reader a refreshing story of a young man's walk with faith and personal growth. The main character, Salliq Washington, thinks he has it all, unfortunately it takes some hard knocks before he realizes his life is amiss, and what having it all truly means. One of my favorite lines from the book is the very last one and I quote, "There is no need to search any longer, Salliq Washington has finally been found."

The author's style of writing was concise and upbeat. Finding Salliq began just as it ended with a bang, and it really draws you into the story. It was different reading Salliq's thoughts. Initially I didn't expect to enjoy Finding Salliq because I am not fond of narrative reads but this one was written with so many twists and turns it kept me intrigued. In addition to the storyline, the songs in the book really took me back to a time when I was club hopping and finger popping. I had one small problem with the book, the editing caused me to re-read many sentences where small words were missing.

As I read this book, a few phrases kept coming to my mind. The first one was "we are all a work in progress" and Salliq certainly proved that. Finding Salliq is a testimony of faith, growth and making your own way in life instead of waiting for others to do it for you. Sometimes doing the right thing means leaving those you love behind. Robert L. Anderson has written an excellent book and it is my credence that Finding Salliq is for everyone.

Excellent! Is this really a "debut" novel?
I can't find the right words to describe this novel. Brilliant? Soulful? Introspective? Eye Opening? What gives?

Mr. Anderson delivers the work of a seasoned pro his first time out. The book flows nicely, dipping in and out of flashbacks, then finally diving headfirst into the storyline. It's got a little of everything: romance, relationships, spirituality, a hint of social commentary, and did I mention it's pretty funny (you will NOT believe the scene with the date with the ghetto girl! - must read) to boot?

All in all, I loved it. I'm anxiously awaiting "Salliq II"!

An Excellent, Full bodied Debut!
A unique mix of humor and spirituality. This good is just... different. I expected your basic "beach read", but this is anything but. It's a fine story that I think anyone can relate to if they've ever woken up one day and wondered exactly where their life was going and what was the purpose of it all. It's a book that will have you examining your approach to life.

I could have done without some of the cursing, and a few of the female characters seemed one dimensional, but overall, it's a book about how men think, and there's nothing wrong with hearing that perspective for a change. And enjoyable, full hearted first effort. Bravo Mr. Anderson, Bravo!

Vision of the Disinherited: The Making of American Pentecostalism

How the Dispossessed Turned to Pentecostalism
Correction: Vision of the Disinherited was first published in 1979 by Oxford Univ. Press

How the Dispossessed Turned to Pentecostalism
Pentecostalism is arguably the most important mass religious movement of the twentieth century. As it grew out of revivals in Topeka, Kansas and Los Angeles, California in the early twentieth century it rapidly gained adherents across the U. S. and throughout the world. Today, it is the second largest sub-group of global Christianity. It has over 30 million American adherents and a worldwide following of 430 million. Before 1970 there were few scholarly histories of the movement. Academics' unfamiliarity with the world of ecstatic religion might have been one reason for this oversight. But just as likely, scholars thought the conservative religion of pentecostalism, like Fundamentalism, was regressive, entrenched, and not worthy of their interests. Because of the paucity of historical research on pentecostalism, Robert Mapes Anderson's exploration of the movement's origins in 1977 was a seminal study. Anderson applied the newest methods in social history, psychology, and religious studies in his effort to trace the roots of American pentecostalism. What he found was that extreme social strain was the source of pentecostalism. Following Eric Hobsbawm and E. P. Thompson, Anderson located social tension (such as class conflict and class stratification) in industrialism. The shift from an agrarian to an industrial society fed estrangement. "Status anxiety" demonstrates how individuals affected by these changes became pentecostals. Accordingly, when asking who pentecostals were, Anderson answers: those cut loose from their roots in the soil, the highly mobile and unstable in residence, occupation, and religious affiliation, who hovered uncertainly between working and middle class (113). He begins his study by examining the rise of the Holiness movement during the second half of the nineteenth century. Holiness advocates were unsatisfied with the lack of piety in mainline denominations and were put off by the growing wealth and elaborateness of the of their churches. Dozens of holiness sects left the mainline denominations in protest, establishing their own fellowships that ministered to common laborers and farmers. The holiness revival spawned a new zeal for "spirit baptism" or a divine empowerment of believers. Pentecostalism took spirit baptism one step further. In 1901, holiness minister Charles Fox Parham asked the students at his Topeka Bible school to study the scriptures and determine what evidence might be given of spirit baptism. Using the pentecost account of Acts chapter two, they concluded that speaking in tongues was the confirmation of holy spirit baptism. The first practitioners of tongues speaking thought they were speaking in known human languages. They reasoned that God had given them the ability to preach the gospel in other countries. Slowly this view changed, and pentecostals came to believe they were speaking in a divine language, which God alone understood. Even though pentecostals were uneducated and poor, speaking in tongues meant that in God's eyes they were powerful citizens of a higher kingdom. The 1906 revival at Azusa street, Los Angeles marked the second phase of the pentecostals' origins. William Seymour, a black student of Parham's, initiated the revival amidst an impoverished urban setting. The Azusa street revival gathered the "ethnic minority groups of Los Angeles," who discovered a "sense of dignity and community denied them in the larger urban culture"(69). Anderson illustrates Pentecostalism's appeal to the dispossessed by analyzing forty leaders of the early movement. Of these he finds that most came from the lower economic ranks of society and had shifted from job to job throughout their lives. Pentecostalism was a release for these individuals. The ecstatic experience of speaking in tongues offered an escape from their "status anxieties" and gave them a sense of divine significance. Equally important, pentecostals' apocalyptic view of the end times allowed them to explain the past and present in terms equal to their social experience. "From the Pentecostal perspective, history seemed to be running down hill . . . and the world seemed to be at the point of collapse." Pentecostals looked for Christ to return and rescue the faithful from the fallen world (80-81). Anderson concludes that pentecostalism represented a dysfunctional and maladjusted reaction to social pressures. Because of the pentecostals' negative appraisal of society and their pessimistic outlook for the future, they were an apolitical, "conservative bulwark of the status quo." They channeled their social protest "into the harmless backwaters of religious ideology"(239). For Anderson, the radical social impulse inherent in the vision of the disinherited was squandered away in escapism and conservative conformity. This is the tragedy, says Anderson, of pentecostalism. This conclusion is one-sided. Anderson assumes that the pentecostals' faith is irrelevant if it does not foment social and economic protest. He also assumes that religious rewards are less satisfying than material ones. Anderson's materialist reading neglects the religious functions of faith for pentecostals and overlooks the importance of pentecostals' internal religious lives. But for the disinherited, speaking in tongues and partaking in healings and other miracles opened new vistas that improved and transformed their lives. Anderson's use of status anxiety to explain the ascendence of pentecostalism is also problematic. Status anxiety, as someone like Richard Hofstadter used it, supposes that the dispossessed sought upward social mobility. According to Hofstadter, status anxiety occurred among Fundamentalists because they desired social and political clout, but were unable to achieve it. Did pentecostals want to climb social and political ladders? By Anderson's own account pentecostals had removed themselves from politics and society. Their quest for religious enrichment rather than social and economic security, calls into question the status anxiety model. Although Anderson's work suffers from a rigidly functionalist model, it is still the best comprehensive history of early pentecostalism. Perhaps future studies, following Grant Wacker's work, will correct his account by emphasizing the positive functions of faith for pentecostals.

The Definitive Work
This is the definitive work on Early Pentecostalism. I cannot imagine why it is out-of-print, with it's extraordinary insight, unbelievable size of Bibliography which is worth the price of the volume in itself, and if that's not enough, the insightful and perceptive original material from original sources. Get this volume if at all possible. Recommended

Good book on a great writer
I would have given this five stars except for its "thrown together" feel. It started as a full-scale biography but the source materials simply were not available. The book that was written consists of some short character sketches and a recapitulation of JO'C's hunting trips and writing career.

The author is a hunter so he does justice to his subject.

In my view, this book has two serious omissions. First, the author repeatedly asserts that O'Connor was the dean of gunwriters in his time. This is true (IMHO) but the book does a poor job showing why this is true and what made JO'C's writing special.

Second, this work does not discuss the feud between Elmer Keith and O'Connor. Ostensibly the point of contention was the effectiveness of small, fast bullets like the 270 Win. But the Keith side (since Elmer's acolytes got in on the fun) made it personal. JO'C, in contrast, showed a sense of humor and charity that reflects favorably on his character.

A superb record of O'Connor's achievements as a hunter
Jack O'Connor: The Legendary Life Of America's Greatest Gunwriter is the definitive biography of one of twentieth century North America's premier sportsmen, big-game hunters, and gun experts. Biographer Robert Anderson drew upon information provided from interviews with O'Connor's family and friends, as well as O'Connor's own papers, photos, and correspondences. The O'Connor papers from Washington State University were to prove invaluable in presenting a complete portrait of a man who had a great zest for love, despite a concurrent ability to be egotistically and occasionally mean spirited. A superb record of O'Connor's achievements as a hunter, the reader will learn about the early years of hardship in Arizona, the personal family tragedy of losing a son, the post-World War II "glory years" when O'Connor hunted tiger in India, sheep in Iran, buffalo in Tanganyika, and encounters with the ruling class of foreign land, and the corporate moguls of hunting and firearms industries. All of which gave O'Connor a special prestige to the point where his writings could spell success or failure for products and armaments marketed for the sportsman hunter. If you've ever read one of his columns or experienced the thrill of a big game hunt, you will want to read Jack O'Connor!

poem
Fop Flop In the most elegant apparel Nothing but worm silks In the finest golden thread And superior king red velvet sashes

You'd think I would have known better? I couldn't blame them who wouldn't? cut air with scissors while sewing their needles into invisible cloth for the very low price of..... silk a loom golden thread a full bag of coins Oh those Villain Scoundrels! Now, I know not to buy such vestments with rather large investments Oh what a bratty gnatty I was For I thought I was cool but truly a fool Why emperor you look rather bare, that's quite rare! I was in such a pursuit For only a birthday suit I must admit now Me, My very own self yes indeed, your emperor himself have become a stupid and incompetent dandy All for the Imaginary Image! and now I live happily ever after, no more garb well, that is until the next apparel discovery (Now if you'll excuse me there's a clothier waiting at my door who says he's created the latest design in Pajama attire)

A delightful gem
Generally, I do not care for audio books; many of the readers speak in a dull voice that rapidly drives me either away from the story or to sleep. However, there are a few exceptions; this is one.

Understand, that this is not the normal audio book; this edtion has a large cast of actors who collaborated to produce this item as a fund raiser for Starbright.

The result is an ensemble piece that is witty and charming. Part of the fun for me, was guessing who was reading before looking at the cast list included in the box.

Other folks feel that this isn't for children; I don't know as I don't have children, but I found that my "inner child" was highly entertained for 40 minutes with this tape.

If you are a fan of one or more of the actors in this edition or like puns (there are many here!), then you will probably like the Starbright edtion of the Emporer's New Clothes.

Helped my son to read
I had been given 2 of these books from a friend and I decided to see if there were anymore. My son loves this book. He's now working on reading the adult side. It's a great idea to have a page each, 1 for the adult and 1 for the child. We have several of these books now and I see my son sitting down and reading them on his own.

Overall an excellent book for beginning quilters
This was the first purchase that I made when I decided to try my hand at quilting.Alex Anderson's extremely positive and motivating text is perfectly inspirational for the first-time quilter. The projects are not difficult, but you do feel a great amount of satisfaction when you've completed one. Each project is cleverly explained. She tells you exactly how much and what kind of fabric you need for each project and exactly what to cut and how to piece it together.Easy to follow steps. I only wish she would have written more about machine and hand quilting itself. With her vast knowledge of quilting and knack for explaining things I know she could've written a section on quilting that would've proven useful and enlightening to the beginning quilter. Nonetheless I am extremely happy with this purchase. I finished my first project in 3 days!

This book changed my life
I do not watch t.v., so I have never seen Ms. Anderson's show. I can barely sew a straight line, but her book was so simple and reassurring that I've been a successful quilter from day one (with 8 quilts under my belt now). Most helpful was her *brief* list of supplies. Most books insist that beginners buy a million things that they may not really need. If you want to see if you might like quilting, this is probably the best book available - I've spent a lot of time now looking at a lot of others.

Great step by step guidebook for beginning quilters
As a first time quilter I searched for a basic guide with colorful photographs and lots of illustrations. Alex Anderson's unitimidating book was the answer. It guided me through my first quilt, allowing me to piece a rail fence crib quilt by machine, and helping me through the hand quilting process The results were terrific, and my son sleeps under it every night!

Stupend-a-licious!
Dinner & A Movie is a fun, unique way to enjoy some of the best movies out there AND enjoy some great food. The cookbook is just as much fun. The humor and irreverent spirit are still there along with some great food ideas. Grab the book, hit the store, and have a great evening.... with dinner and a movie and some friends!

Go get a movie and start cookin'!
This is a great cookbook for entertaining! The recipes are fun and most are easy! You can plan a whole menu, have some friends over, and pop in the movies!

A great way to have a unique "evening at home"
If you love movies and food, then this is the book for you! With recipes taken from the TBS series "Dinner & A Movie," you can sit at home and reminisce about your teen angst years watching "Pretty in Pink" and eating Pretty in Pink Salmon Steaks. The majority of the films used for this great book are humorous, cult classics that range from James Bond flicks to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and Jim Carrey's "Dumb and Dumber." The recipes are not only easy to follow, but filled with silly remarks from Paul and Annabelle (the two "chefs" from the show), and the book comes with an official "Dinner & a Movie" apron, so your date doesn't need to know how much of a mess you made cooking

Pizza Tiger
If you are in the pizza business or if you are thinking about getting into the pizza business - you must read this book.

Easy to read - but a bit slow in parts - the nature of biography in my opinion .. so overall subject matter for me was excellent and I am in the pizza business.

On a literary scale the book was only a 2 star - but 5 star for me as I used some of the ideas and confirmed some concepts.

Daddio

Great Inspiration
I checked this book out of the public library at a time when my business was near failure. It gave me the spirit to keep on and have a sucessful turnaround. Monahan is a hell of a great story and it comes from the heart. An orphan, high school dropout who overcomes everything and becomes a billionaire. Only in America.

Not great literature and hard to find but well worth having. Now that I own my own copy, I will never give it up.

Pizza Tiger is a great motivating tool for anyone wanting to run their own business.

Don McNay...

IF YOU ARE SELF-EMPLOYED, THIS BOOK IS A GREAT MOTIVATOR!!!
I've had this book for 15 years and think of it often, EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT IN THE PIZZA BUSINESS!! For some reason, I can really identify with Tom Monaghan.

It is a bit biographical, but that isn't a negative. When I want to know about successful people, I like to know all about them. It isn't just their business savvy that got them where they are, it is a combination of many other personal traits that help add up to business success.

One trait that really stuck with me is to interview many people about your product--including people who HATE IT. You can learn a lot about why some people avoid you and your product. Just this one tidbit of advice had helped me to make thousands of exta dollars over the past 15 years.

Straight to the point explanation of the ASP+ features
It's true that it's currently the only ASP+ book but it's great nonetheless. I was waiting with great expectation it's release at Amazon since I'm plugged to their ASPToday web site.

This book is worth 5 stars because of the following:

It came out barely after MS announced it but contains a lot of information about the subject.

MS has work with the writers to make sure the content will be right.

It is well-written by known ASP programmers (and writers).

The content is get-to-the-point on current ASP issues and how ASP+ will fix this.

Show ASP+ coding with both VB7 & C#.

There is a lot more information than the ASPToday's articles so that the book is more than handy.

Written well enough for newcomers to understand it, but I would strongly suggest having ASP experience before-hand. Remember it's a PREVIEW and it means that it's good for people who wants to know it advance where MS is going with ASP.

Decent preview
Although I am a little late I'd like to add my review for those of you who are planning to purchase this book. I think it is a nice pioneering review for ASP+. (ASP.NET). A lot has been said about .NET, the only thing I'd like to add that this book was probably the first one to be published about the .NET platform even before the name was .NET. So the info in the book is still relevant but the names have changed a little bit. If you are interested in learning the .NET platform get a more recent source other wise to learn ASP.NET I believe it is a good choice. I'll give it 5 points mainly because the examples are written in c# which is a nice change. If you'd prefer VB there are still enough examples.

Great book to get started
This is a great book (as to be expected from Alex Homer) for beginning to understand .Net and ASP+. It doesn't go into the .Net framework in too much detail but explains how ASP has progressed to ASP+ and ADO to ADO+. A must read for any ASP devloper who wants to move to .Net
